646.0. "elitism" by ULTRA::LARU (Let's get metaphysical) Mon Feb 01 1988 14:28
however I believe the participants/audiences of the other conferences
are a bit different than the participants here in terms of approaches
to life and spiritual things in general...
I sometimes fall prey to this attitude, and I get real uncomfortable,
'cause I think it's pretty elitist. I often read notes in this
and other files and think to myself "That's not the way it works,
you ignorant, narrow-minded little twit!".... and then I realize
that I am the narrow-minded one... I think that we are all seeking,
each on our individual level, and that NO ONE not even [name your
favorite avatar or Nobel prize-winner] knows THE ONE TRUE PATH.
It's pretty funny, because I've just learned how to _spell_
enlightenment, am now busy trying to learn to pronounce it,
and then sometimes have the audacity to think that somebody else is
_obviously_ misinformed.
I guess it's true: Wisdom lies in realizing how little you know...
Anyway, this is not a dig at you Cindy... I just think that we
shouldn't get caught up in thinking that we are _different_ from
the rest of the world. I think that's a trick that ego uses to
maintain itself, and prevents us from getting where we really want
to go.

646.1 | Definition | CLUE::PAINTER | It's all relative....maybe. | Mon Feb 01 1988 14:48 | 21 |

From my blue DEC-issued dictionary:
different - adj. 1. Unlike; dissimilar. 2. Distinct; separate.
3. Unusual; distinctive.
While every person on the face of the earth is still human (and
part of the same), every person is also different to some degree
(even identical twins because they each encounter different life
situations unless they spend every moment together for the rest
of their lives).
Therefore, the word different does not mean 'better' or 'worse'
or 'elitist', nor was there an implication in this direction.
And if the responses to the topic are identical to the responses
to the same topic in the other conferences, then I will stand
corrected.

Bruce,
Having thought about this last night, I would like to say that I
see a bit more clearly the point you were trying to make.
There are so many times when people (all of us at some point) attempt
to make themselves 'superior' to others, thus making the others
feel 'inferior', and this is when we all get into problems.
Sorry about that.
