643.0. "Remember: This is an Open Conference" by ERASER::KALLIS (Just everybody please calm down...) Mon Feb 01 1988 09:32
-<A stitch in time ...>-
The DEJAVU Notes Conference in particular is a special
Conference. It is, however, a public conference, meaning
that it can be accessed by any Digital employee on the network
with a system running VAXnotes software.
This means that though we may know who the "active" noters
are, we don't know how large the audience of "read only" readers
are.
Many of the subjects written of in DEJAVU can be called
controvial. And some folk have trouble handling controversy. While
the last thing anyone wants to do is stifle discussion of issues,
it's important to remember that when each of us "speaks," lots of
people "listen." And not everybody may understand what we're trying
to say.
It's probably a good idea to consider this Conference like
any open forum. If you have something of an intensely personal nature
to share, it might be a good idea to share it via VAXmail rather
than in public. This will help to ensure that it won't be
misinterpreted.
This is not an invitation to become paranoid, but just a gentle
reminder that DEJAVU is a public forum. So if you'd
be uncomfortable posting what you'd say in creating or responding
to a note as hard copy on a bulletin board near some heavily
trafficked area, like a cafeteria or library, you should probably
be uncomfortable posting it in this Conference. If you have that
kind of note/response in mind, remember, there is more than
one way to say to make your point.
