| 635.1 | well ... | INK::KALLIS | Has anybody lost a shoggoth? | Fri Jan 22 1988 17:00 | 16 |
| | A shoggoth is a rather nasty beastie made famous in several stories
by H. P. Lovecraft, particularly _At The Mountains of Madness_.
It's alluded to in other stories, including "The Horror at Red Hook."
It's amorphic, carniverous, and can grow sense organs, such as eyes,
temporarily. It's generally black, but its surface looks wetly
translucent, and it can generate polychromatic spots of glows and
sparklings that may have quasihypnotic properties, especially for
the young, enabling shoggoths to fascinate them until they can
eat them. They can grow to quite large sizes.

A probable variant of the main breed is, I believe, featured in
the Stephen King story, "The Raft."

Worst of all, they're not housebroken.

Oh. One of those! Gak. I read _Beyond_The_Mountains_Of_
_Maddness_ by Lovecraft, when I was 10 or so, and couldn't sleep
for weeks. I must have repressed the memory.
May all the shoggoths remain lost !

	Thanks,
    	Alan.

| | The question is how does one pronounce it? Is the o in sho long?
    Example:

"Is that a real goth or just a shoggoth?"

Is it a short 0 as in "George Bernard Shoggoth" ?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

Sorry - hit <NEXT UNSEEN> and forgot the topic number......

From Science News - if you take a Curad bandage and open it in the
dark very quickly, the adhesive will produce a greenish glow for
a very short period of time.

It works - we verified it many times (but then little things tend
    to amuse us......)

It's a short o, I've been told. All I can get out of the shoggoth
    is "Teke-li-li!" That doesn't help.

However, I've been informed that someone's lost one, so, good riddance!
    :-)

    I have two questions.

    1) How do you _know_ that it's meaner than a frumious Bandersnatch.
Did you forget that you're supposed to shun those beasties?

    2) It may even be found to be meaner that a frumious Bandershatch
named "Sue"! I would not know from personal experience, however,
as "shunning" is one of the stronger points in my skill set.

re .1: Oh, you mean you've been keeping my shoggoth all this time?
I was wondering where he'd wandered off to. We never really knew
his real name, we just called him "Skippy." Please send him back
to me A.S.A.P. The kids miss him. They like to bring Skippy out
to play with their friends. Funny how quiet this neighborhood is
    lately...

I understand they eat bandersnatches when they can find them.

    Re .10 (Brian):

Sorry, not yours. The real owner contacted me. If yopu've lost
one, I suggest you look in Castle Lake; I hear one's loose there.

    RE: .11 - eating bandersnatches

Yes, I understand that in some cultures the bandersnatch is considered
quite a delicacy. I myself tried one back in '76 but failed to
become fond of the dish. It stuck to my dental work. Some people
claim they taste much like chicken.
