623.0. "The Ring Of Truth" by JJM::ASBURY () Wed Jan 13 1988 11:24

Hello all. Before I start this, let me just say that I really enjoy
DEJAVU and I have a lot of respect for its participants. I have
learned so much from so many of you. I feel like I know many of
you and I feel like I have made a bunch of new friends. Thanks to
all of you, just for being you!

Now, on to the more serious stuff:

You might call it "instinct" or "intuition" or something entirely
different. I call it the "Ring of Truth". A gut-feeling, sort of.
Whatever you call it, ("A rose by any other name...") it works for
    me.
Many, if not most, of the major decisions I have made in my
life so far have been based on this gut-feeling. Often, the best
justification I can offer when asked "Why did you choose...?" is
    "It Felt Right".
For example, when I was a senior in high school and it came
time to choose a college, I thought about many different schools.
One day, the name "Worcester Polytechnic Institute" came into my
mind and It Felt Right. I applied, was accepted, and spent the next
four years there. During those four years, I grew up alot, both
emotionally and "spiritually". My life at that school provided me
with many experiences which I probably would not have had if I had
chosen a different school. *I never doubted that I had made the
right decision*! There are many, many other examples of this in
    my life.
I am still, however, learning how important it is for me to
listen to this "feeling" and make sure my decisions do have "the
ring of truth". The great majority of the "wrong" decisions I have
made (maybe the opposite of a "good" or "right" decision is not
    a "wrong" one, I don't know...)are the decisions I have made while
steadfastly ignoring that inner voice. A very good example is my
current job. When I was offerred this job, I consciously ignored
the part of me which was saying "It Doesn't Feel Right". I rationalized
    - good salary, good company, good location, etc., and accepted the
job. Without going into detail, suffice it to say that I should
have listened to the inner me.

Why am I sharing this? I guess I am just looking for a little
feedback. I am in the process of forming some theories about why
and how this "ring of truth" works. Maybe each decision point in
our lives is a fork in the road, sort of, and the "inner voice" is
a "higher self" trying to help you choose the "right path" to
"enlightenment" or whatever. (I put these words in quotes, because
the interpretation of what exactly they mean or encompass is sometimes
quite individual...what you think I mean may not be what I really
am trying to say, the words sometimes seem inadequate...)

    Any thoughts?

    	-Amy.

    Re .0 (Amy):

One school of thought is that some people are slightly precognitive.
Thus, when given choices, one may feel more "comfortable" than the
    alternative(s). If so, it's a psi function.

An alternative to that is that you might pick up all sorts of data
unconsciously, and these are evaluated in your subconscious and
manifested in your consciousness as the "gut feel" you sense.

623.2That inner voice...MOSAIC::GARYDon't dream it. Be it.Wed Jan 13 1988 12:2915
Amy,

In Marion Wienstien's (sp?) book Positive Magic (I believe that is the
title), she talks about an inner bell. That before one proceeds on a
course of action it should be tested against this inner sense to determine
the rightness or wrongness of a particular action. You might enjoy reading
this book.

For myself I too have an "inner voice", but in my case it is more of a
conscience, helping me determine right from wrong. Yours sounds more
useful. I have many decisions in my life that I am never sure that I have
made the right choice.

623.3Something similar, but with a job offerSSDEVO::YOUNGERGod is nobody. Nobody loves you.Wed Jan 13 1988 12:5511
Several years ago, after I had just started as a temp for DEC, I was
offered a job with another company. The job was exactly within my
field of study, was a permanant job, had a better salary than I was
getting as a temp, benefits, etc. I turned it down, because something
about it didn't feel right. Various people told me I must be crazy to
turn it down, and urged me to reconsider. A month later the company
went out of business. If I had taken that job, I would have become
unemployed. As it is, I am still working for DEC, making considerably
more than I would have made with the job with the other company.

A few months back, when the stock market was going up and up, I
told Martha we should buy $2K worth and sell it within six months.
I thought we could make a few hundred $$. Stock price was $160.
She said, "that's peanuts, if you're so damn sure of yourself,
take the home improvement loan and buy 10K$." I meditated, my
stomach turned over, I said it sounds good but it doesn't feel
right....I would have lost thousands of borrowed dollars....MWR

I too, have an inner voice, my intuition, gut feeling, higher self
or whatever anybody wants to call it. I always ask if this is right,
or to be shown a sign if it is, and always get an answer.

Everybody has this ability, like learning to read, it has to be
    developed.

I am amazed sometimes at some of the answers I receive. Especially
if something isn't going right. I do a lot of sewing and if I'm
doing something wrong I always get a sign. Don't always listen.
Even if time is short and I am going to run out, I am shown signs.
I can laugh afterwards, but at the time am incredibly humble.

The most embarrassing thing is when I do receive answers to my
questions and I then answer them out loud - usually in the car with
    people watching me!!!

We can all get parking spaces, but I now program the time as well.
In Sydney parking is probably the same as anywhere in the States,
little or none. A group of us often go to the movies in the city,
and I always program for the spot, (where it is flashes into my
mind) and the time I want to arrive. If by chance I am early, I
always get red lights, or take wrong turns until the time is up,
but always make it to the second.

I now always listen for answers on any decision I make. The more
confident I get the easier it is to receive these answers.
