| I had an interesting experience once...though I can't explain it.
When I was about 10 my stepsister and I were messing around with
a board game my Mom had called "Kreskin's ESP", which contained
a pendulum, and a board layed out to allow the pendulum to swing
to both numbers and letters as you held the pendulum over the board.
Well, we were just messing around, and my stepdad and stepbrother
had gone out to the hardware store, and we asked the pendulum (I
forget just how we did that) what time they would get home, and
the darn thing swung to what I remember as a 1, then a 4, then a
2, which we took as 1:42. By jove, they rolled into the garage
about an hour and a half later at 1:42 (I don't remember if this
was the time, but whatever the time was they got back at that time,
and Kay and I freaked out). My stepdad said it was a co-incidence
"tree worship" is what he calls the paranormal...but it's a heck
of a co-incidence if it was one.

Lets take the second question first; it's easier to answer. It is
only a tiny jump from "how does a pendulum work?" to "how does any
means of divination work?". The answer can vary from "it's your
subconscious playing tricks on you" to "It is the WORD OF GOD(Goddess?)
manifesting on earth". I choose to think that a pendulum is a means
of plugging into what I call the universal switchboard, what others
call the universal consciousness. As to background, I have nothing
to offer except that my hunch is that it is a tool that is as old
as language itself. ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: If the method you use with
the pendulum involves asking the pendulum "what is a yes response?"
always give the pendulum a means to say "there is no answer currently
for this question". this will improve your reliability considerably.

| I can relate to that; expecially the part where you leave it an
opportunity to say "there is no answer currently available"...
One problem that I have with many psychics and palm readers, is
the total confidence they seem to have when predicting future events.
I believe the most any psychic can do is predict what will probably
happen based on current circumstances...but, since we have total
free will, and anyone at any time can do anything they want to, one
can never predict exactly what the outcome of a situation will be with
absolute certainty...and the more people involved in the situation, the more
variables of free will are involved. I do believe, though, that
there are talented people who can predict what will most likely
happen in the future, based on the circumstances at the time of
the prediction.
Luke Skywalker: "What's going to happen to them?"
Yoda: "Not certain, not certain...difficult to see, is the future,
always in motion."
Ben Kenobi: "Not even Yoda can see their fate."

| The method that I learned, involves a key or a ring which
is psychically attuned to the asker, suspended from a string.
Using a pencil which is usually parallel to the asker, you
set the direction for "yes", "no" and "no answer at this time".
It usually works out that "yes" is back and forth, "no" is
right to left, and "no answer" is spinning.
It's alot of fun, but I think that whatever the mechanism is
that induces the movement, doesn't know anymore than the
asker does...

| Mine is a Hopi arrowhead mined from Quartzsite suspended on a silver
chain. The answers are coming from the subconcious. No matter
how still you try to hold your hand, your subconcious still sends
out subtle messages through your nervous system to cause the movement.
Before I begin, I ask my subconcious is she will respond (sometimes
she won't and sometimes she plays tricks on me). If she says yes,
I then ask if she will channel the answers from my Higher Self who
is known to the myoho, if she says yes ... then I begin.
Always ask the same question several times to be sure you are getting
a consistent answer. Just as with tarot, I have two or three sessions
and watch for consistency, if your answers are not consistent...
put it away and try again another day. I've gotten some pretty
good results using the pendulum.

>I think that whatever the mechanism is that induces the movement,

I agree. However, the mechanism frequently, provably, knows things
which the asker is not aware of knowing. (For example, you can
not infrequently find things when you don't remember, consciously,
where you left them).
Works fine -- as long as you believe it will -- without any "tuning"
of the object, any small hefty object will work. You may need to
practice a while to get it to do anything.
The dangers are less than but similar to the OUIJA. Stop the moment
things feel the least bit wrong (if you are determined to do this
you are even less likely to need to).

497.7 | What about permission? | FLOWER::JASNIEWSKI | | Wed Sep 23 1987 17:54 | 13 |

I was taught to ask *permission* from the pendulum before even
trying to define the yes/no response...I guess it shows whatever
mechanism involved some respect; that you're not just foolin around.
This is done with the 3 questions "Can I - Shall I - May I" of course
a consistant response is needed for all 3, otherwise you stop. If
a consistant response is obtained, then you ask for the positive
response. If this differs from that obtained for the 3 questions,
you stop, and "try again another day"

| What do people use as pendulums. Do most people use ordinary objects?
Does anybody use, say, quartz crystal which is supposed to amplify?
Is there any evidence to support a theory that a crystal would work
better than a car key? Is there any significance to the chain? Does
a silver or gold chain work better than a string? What about a
pendulum with a quartz crystal at BOTH ends and a sliver chain?
One crystal doing the moving, and the other held in the hand making
phisical contact with the body.

| RE: .9
If you accept the belief that pendulum acts to bring out information
in the subconscious (however it got there) then *no* distinct answer
can be given. What will work best is what you believe will work
best. Perhaps I should say "feel" rather than believe, since rational
belief is only part of it -- what feels right *is* right in this
case.
Crystals are evocative, precious metals are evocative. Both may
produce, therefore, better results. I know, at least for me, that
any "physically qualified" (i.e., size, weight, length, flexibility,
etc.) ordinary object/chain works fairly well for me, and all I have
tried work about the same. I have not, however, made any effort to
experiment with "powerful" or "evocative" pendula, and I might well
tap into something in my subconscious with them and get deeper,
better, or otherwise different results.

| I can only tell you what I use re: pendulums. I have a small quartz
crystal on the end of a silver chain; the other end is a small
half moon (to fit around my finger). This note, by the way, has
given me a lot more info to work with--! I found that I had to
be in a fairly serious mood to work with it, and I had the feeling
that I should somehow "ask" permission first. Once doing that,
I tried to keep my questions at a minimum, and had to repeat them
often (maybe my pendulum is hard of hearing ;-) ). I feel it has
worked for me.
As with choosing crystals, just be aware of what attracts you. If
a button on the end of a string does it for you, go with it.
Good luck,
Jane

| There is a book available (if you can get it in Sydney you can get
it anywhere) - that is written by two guys - I don't remember the
name, but I'm sure somebody will on Pendulums. They actually make
their own out of dowl and string. They seem to have a very good
business going with it, but as said in .11 whatever turns you on.
Mine is a carved piece of polished wood on fishing line. It works
really well. I have learnt only to ask important questions, I don't
think it likes silly ones, like will I meet Mr Right, or when will
I get married. Very good for finding you rising sign, and time
of birth, again doesn't work for everybody, some people never have
a birth time. :^)
I have tried amethyst, lead crystal, and finally settled on this.

497.13 | How does one ask permission? | NATASH::BUTCHART | | Fri Oct 02 1987 13:48 | 14 |
| I've been intrigued by the idea of asking permission from one's
subconscious. How does one do this? If one's inner self is not
in a mood to talk, how does that manifest? Does one use the pendulum
itself to ask permission or some other method? How does one know
if if one's inner self has given a straight answer? Do you, at
the outset of your work, ask your Self to pick a direction that
means Out To Lunch, so to speak?
BTW, I've also tried the permission technique with Tarot readings.
When I get the go-ahead from the permission part of the reading,
I've found I get _much_ more accurate readings. I'll put the technique
I dreamt up in the Tarot note.

| re: Marcia (pronounced "marsha", right?)
Lazaris did a Sunday workshop on the Sub-conscious a couple
of years ago (available on tape) during which he described various
ways of changing the sub-conscious. (Constant repetition of what
you DO want is one way.) To go in via meditation, however, requires
*permission* in a sense. Actually, what it requires is humility
and gratitute, according to him (as I remember it.) If you are
not sincere in your attitude, the sub-conscious will protect itself
and not allow you in. Part of this rationale comes from undrstanding
that you somehow say, "don't let anyone in there, because they may
mess things up" etc. or many things similar and your sub-conscious,
following its instructions, does everything it can to keep you or
anyone or anything else out. So, therefore, in order to get in,
it must "see" you as a friend...the REAL and loving you is the
only one who has the *key* to enter in this fashion.

497.15 | From what I have seen | ARMORY::MCKAYJ | | Wed Oct 07 1987 11:24 | 36 |
| Fist of all this is the first time that I have input to any of
the notes in this file even though I have been reading them for
over a year now.
I have had experience of not only using the pendulum but also
been the witness of another person using them.
One instantance where I used one is when I was troubleshooting a
module for the production line. I had tried everything to fix this
module but could not find anything wrong with it however when it
was placed into a unit it failed. It was at this point I decided
to try to see if I could locate the problem with the use of the
pendulum. I proceeded to ask if the problem was due to a transistor
failure, diode, resistor, or ic failure.I received a possitive ans.
when the I got to the ic question. I then proceeded to go over each
ic asking if this was the ic causing the problem till the pendulum
idicated the ic causing the problem. I then place the module on
the tester but no problem with that ic was located. I then replaced
the ic then placed the module back into the unit it had failed in.
The module then passed. By the way I had another tech working next
to me who just couldn"t believe what he saw happen, and I did take
some ridicule from him.
The time another person used a pendulum was one new years day when
a friend of the family's mother in-law used a needle and thread
to determine how many kids my wife and I were going to have.
Well when the needle was placed over my wifes wrist it would not
stay still, my friends mother in-law then asked my wife if she was
preg. to which she replied not to her knowledge. My friends mother
in-law then proceeded by the swing of the needle told us we were
going to have two children 1st a girl, then a boy. About two weeks
later we found out that my wife was preg. and our first child was
indeed a girl, our second child was indeed a boy a few years later.
We do not have any others and don"t plan anymore.
As you can see I am a believer in its powers.
