| I saw a group of people on a TV talk show some six months ago or
so. The only thing that I remember about them is that they made
this hooting sort of sound in unison and told us all that if any
one of us listening had understood the hiden and encoded message,
they were to contact them at once. Their theory was that some of
us are "one of them", but we just don't know it. Is it the same
group?

Hi Marion,
I don't know if this is the same group or not (they actually
hooted? :-)).
Anyone else here anything about them?

| Yep. One of the strangest things I have seen in a while. Come
to think about it, it probably wasn't the same folks as your friends
saw. The only way these kooks could give you a "light from within"
would be to force you to inhale a light bulb :-D.

Yes. I haven't heard the hoots, but it should be obvious that if
they did it in unison, the message was encoded by the beat-frequency and
phase differences between the tones of the various members hooting. Simple
Fourier analysis would bring out the message, which is, of course,
encoded in binary.... :-P

I saw them too - it wasn't so much of a 'hoot' as humming - only
on the scale of a cut-down pipe organ. Quite strange at that.
Ah well....guess I'm not one of them.

| I wonder if anyone who contacted them with a decoding of their message
was ever told s/he had an invalid interpretation.

| RE: .7
I don't have the details with me, but as I remember it:
A group of scientists, using a new technique (I can't remember just
what) have tentatively identified some nearby stars as having at
least one super-Jovian planet. E Eridani got one of the highest
probabilities (I think there was one other approximately as high).
It was almost certain, *IF* all the assumptions they made were correct
and *IF* their instruments were working the way they think they
were. Although they are fairly confident, they caution that there
has to be independent confirmation before their discovery can really
be relied on. Caution is a good idea here, since there have been
many previous anouncements of "super-Jovian" companions to nearby
stars, none of which could reliably be confirmed.
