-< Unusual Statistic>- An interesting sidelight for New Englanders: Today, a local radio talk-show station, WRKO is holding its annual marathon for The Jimmy Fund [the only charity they do one for]. Per usual, they try to get people to issue "challenges," that is, to match donations for a given subset (e.g., "If all people in the mental health field will each contribute $20.00..."). A woman called from Salem, Massachusetts and identified herself as a witch. She challenged all witches _and Pagans_ in the area to contribute at least $20 apiece, saying, "We're supposed to be healers. Now, let's put our money where our mouth is." She sounded legitimate. The host of the show asked her, "How many witches would you say are in the area?" The caller said, "In Salem alone, more than 2,000. In Massachusetts, something like four to five thousand. An interesting way to glean witch census figures. Steve Kallis, Jr.

Answering my own entry: In the _People_ magazine profile on Laurie Cabot, she claims that there are about 6,000 witches in the United States, with 2,000 in Salem alone. Maybe Lauriie Cabot is where the caller got her figures. Presumably these are of the Wiccan variety. Steve Kallis, Jr.

Re: .1 So by those figures, 1/3 of the Witches in the U.S. live in Salem?! I find that somewhat hard to believe. Mark

Re .2: I agree. I suspect that there are a lot more than that. However, I posted the follow-up because of the base note. I suspect there are more in the West (I do not count shamans as witches, or there would be _lots_ more out West). Steve Kallis, Jr. P.S.: An occultist I know quite well swears this is true. Although he's not a Wiccan, he buys some of his supplies from a place out in Colorado with Wiccan connections. He sent out an order and hadn't heard from them for a while, so he thought he'd give them a call. He dialed long distance, and got a "This phone has been disconnected" message. Puzzled, he dialed the Colorado Directory Assistance and got an operator. He explained he was trying to find a number for this extablishment, giving name and city, buit that the phone had registered disconnected. The operator said, "Oh-oh!" "What's the matter?" said the occultist. The operator said, "That's where I buy _my_ stuff." -SK |
