| Could you tell us more? The chanting -- could anyone recognize
the language? By any chance, did anyone record it? Was this day?
Night? Twilight?
I haven't heard much about this cemetary, but I'd sure like to!

I'm not sure what kind of language it was. Our first thought was
it was Latin. The chanting was loud, because we were in the car,
which was running, windows were closed and radio was on but after
we heard the chanting we turned it off. All of our visit to Harvard
were at night. I can't remember what time it was. But I use to
work till 9:00 pm and it was always after work.

| I'd also like to know about Gravity Hill. I've heard about such
seeming gravitational anomalies (the conventional explanation is
that they are actually a natural optical illusion (frequently
artificially reinforced), but didn't know that there were any in
this region. Just where in Harvard is it?

Are you talking about the area on Rt 110/ 111 between Rt 117 & the
center of town? Because ther are (were) two seperate religious
orders who have homes/ convents/ monestarys there. (pls forgive
my spelling!!) It is quite common to see priests or nuns in the
'traditional' habits walking down 110, particually at dusk. I
believe they do it for meditation or exercise. At one point in
time, so the story goes, there was only one order, that refused
to abide by vatican II edict to celebrate Mass in english as opposed
to latin. The entire order was ex- communicated. After a while,
this was revoked, whether for all or just a portion of the community
I don't know. But they split up, and one order still does latin,
and the other is more 'modern'. (If by modern you call living in
seperate houses for men, and women, and a childrens ward.)
My family has had a house on the lake near there for 9 years or
so, and we are quite used to seeing them. Though it stil is quite
a shock to see a speed boat go by , pulling waterskieers, with
everyone, driver , watchers, and skiier, in a long black habbit.
I've never heard or noticed anything strange in the cemetary, but
have heard that the care- taker is pretty serious about no
tresspassers. Never heard of dobermans, though.
This is the story as I've always heard it. If any of it is wrong,
I apologise. No offense is meant to any one in the orders. The ones I've
chatted with at the post office, walking down the road, etc. are
very nice people. I believe the only strang thing about them is
they still like & live in the old fashioned catholic way.
Mary
PS; both orders sell home baked goods or fresh veggies/ meat.
If you get a chance to try their brownies, they are heavenly!!!
Sorry,,,couldn't resist.... (-)
Re: gravity hill.... I've been on it several times and never been
much impressed. It is an optical illusion. But I will find out
the name of the road & post directions.

I don't remember the directions to Gravity Hill (it's been eight
years since I been there), but I would be interested in getting
the directions also.
Thanks,

Get off 495 at the exit for 111 north. You'll see a sign
"Entering Harvard". Go north a couple of miles past an orchard
on the left. Stay on 111 as it goes up a steep hill. At the top
is the intersection of Slough Road, Rt 111 and Stow Road. Looks like
this:
slough (1), 111 (2), Stow (3)

Take a left going down Stow Road. Very soon you'll see a very pretty
panoramic view of meadows on both sides of the road from the top of
the hill. At the bottom of this hill is where you should park your
car. Put it in neutral, take off the brake and you'll feel your car
rolling up what appears to be a steep grade.
You probably won't say "Wow" but you will say "hmmm".

| Speaking of "Gravity Hill" there is also one located in Central
Pennsylvania in the vicinity of Numidia. I was there many years
ago. It was quite a shock to the senses. Like the one mentioned
previously it too is an illusion. If anyone closer to Pa than to
Mass would be interested I could probably get the exact location
provided the location hasn't been altered over the years.

Back when I worked in Greenfield, Mass., I heard about another
"Gravity Hill" somewhere in that area. Don't have any specifics,
though.

I've lived in marlborough MA all my life and the harvard cemetary
and gravity hill have been talked about most of my childhood and
teen years, In my late teens, me and a group of high spirited
friends;^) decided to visit the cemetary on a halloween night.
Did'nt see anything out of the ordinary. Just took a quick stroll
through and departed. The moonlight and the effect a cemetary might
have have on a youngster at night were the scariest thing about
the place. As noted in a previous reply, the groundskeeper is problably
sick of people venturing in to the place all the time to see if
the story's are true. I've heard hundreds of them,(story's). Gravity
hill was also another phenomonon i've heard about since childhood.
I would have to agree with the optical illusion theory. Has anyone
ever tested it with a level? I also have heard of one in clinton
but can't remember where. I'll have to call some old friends.

| I tried to find that "Gravity hill" spot, but it didn't seem at all
like my car was rolling uphill... it rolled downhill like cars normally
do! John, you say there's a panoramic view of meadows on both sides of
the road from the top of the hill. But you didn't say how far to drive
before you get to the "bottom" of the hill. is it a few hundred feet,
or is it more like a mile? And when I'm supposed to park the car....
you mean just stop in the middle of the road? I assume it should feel
like the car is rolling backwards then right? Because the road still
leans downhill... for quite a ways.
