I live in Harwood, Maryland just west of Annapolis. Well anyway,
on Wednesday the 11 I spent the night over my friends house out
in the country. It was about 6:30, when we were up in his attic
when I said "Hey Tommy look out the window will ya" he asked why
and I said just look. He got up from his chair and looked out the
window, he stopped and looked in suprise out the window. He turned
around to me and said "lets go outside and look at them." We both
rushed down the stairs and out the door. When we got outside all
I saw was about 15 objects that had lights going in a perfect circle,
we both stopped dead in our traks and looked at the flashing lights.
Within the next 3 hours we saw 97 of these lighted ships what ever
they were go across the sky. I ended up useing his 35mm to get
photos. I used up 6 rolls of film at 25 exposures each. We are
going to get the pictures in a little while. If anyone saw the
same please leave your replys here.
thanx,
Robins

| What color(s) were these lights? How large did they appear
to be? How fast were they moving? Did they make any type of sound?
How far from the ground were they? Did you and/or your friends
feel/have any unusual experiences associated with this event?
Did the objects do any other "unusual" (non-aircraft) type of
behavior? Did they seem more like planes and jets or not? What
did the photographs show? Did the newspapers tell of any other
sightings? I would think that with 97 objects visible in the sky
for over 3 hours, somebody would have noticed them too.

Well there were many differant colored lights lights, but the one
that appeared most was blue. They appeared to be about 60 or 70
meters across and about 90 meters long. They were moving along
comfortably at about mach 4. They were close to about 50 ft. off
the ground. Yes they did make sounds, they sounded like a chopers
blades as it takes off. Well the only thing I can think of is that
we were asleep just before we went into the attac. Yes as a mater
of fact one made a 90 degree turn I mean just like at an angle one
minute he was going one way then the next he was going another no
singns of a "regular" turn. No they did not seem like planes or
jets or even helocopters. The pictures turned out just like I had
planed you can see the outline of the ship. Yes in the paper the
next day I saw an article on some people that saw U.F.O's right
at the times I saw them and the same colors. What do you think?

What do I think? I think they should have blown out your eardrums,
not to mention all of your windows. Those are impressive figures;
but how did you mention them?

304.13 | A mini-ufo sighting. | PUZZLE::GUEST_TMP | HOME, in spite of my ego! | Thu Sep 17 1987 01:43 | 48 |
| I had my first UFO yesterday. Unfortunately, it wasn't a very
impressive one but it impressed me enough to contact officials at
San Jose International Airport (followed later by a return call
from an FAA person.)
I was working outside my door yesterday at around 11 A.M. when
I was suddenly aware of a whistling sound (as a projectile fired
from a gun might make.) I had enough time to look up (my body was
pointed northward at the time) and over my head approximately 50-100
feet up, an object about the size of a medium-sized dog flew past.
It was traveling at approximately 100 mph nearly horizontally (actually
it was dropping at about 5-10 degrees.) It proceeded in a straight
line for about 200 yards or so before it disappeared behind
trees. I did notice that it was dark colored (brownish or gray)
and also that it appeared to be "tumbling." It was not smooth shaped
but instead looked somewhat like a bunch of knotted rags. It whistled
the entire path of its flight.
I happen to live in the Santa Cruz mountains at an elevation
of 2900 feet. I have very few neighbors and most of my locale is
park land. I sit on the flight path to San Francisco International
Airport (for aircraft flying from the south, e.g. Los Angeles).
I also sit approximately 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean. My immediate
thought was that something fell out of an airplane (which is why
I called the airport.) The problem with that though is that even
though airplanes fly roughly 2000 feet above me, by the time an
object reached me it would have a nearly vertical trajectory.
Additionally, the object was flying north and the S.F. airport is
northwest. If a big gun had fired this thing from nearby, I would
have heard it. Anything fired from the ocean would probably have
had a more vertical trajectory also. The officials I spoke with
reported nothing unusual had occurred to their knowledge.
I am disappointed that it didn't have lights and that it wasn't
several football fields in size and yet this is, thus far,
unexplainable. The thought of a bird came up. This is still
a possibility...however, it whistled like a projectile, it had
no wings, it flew at roughly 100 mph with a tumbling action, it
flew straight and almost level. It made no sound upon impact
(that I could hear.) Anyway, I got to thinking, what if it were
an "alien ship" of some strange type? Someone I know suggested
that it might contain intelligent insects (insert smile, here.)
Next week I will attempt to locate it, the problem is that the
terrain is steep, wild (rattlesnakes, poison oak, etc.) and thick
in foliage. I can pinpoint it within an area about 200 yards square,
though.
(The was no smoke behind this, either.)
So much for this "mini" ufo.

| re: -.1
Believe it or not, I asked myself those same questions. I know
reasonably well what my eyes are capable of seeing (usually) and
it "felt" like the object was I described...for example, a baseball
can travel as fast as 95 mph (or thereabouts) and it gets pretty
hard to focus on at that speed. It is quite small, however.
A dragster can attain a speed of about 200 mph (while you are
behind a railing watching it go by) and it, too, is hard to focus
on. It is quite large (relative to a baseball,) however. So, again,
my sense was to say that it was perhaps going at a rate of speed
that the baseball could be (also determined by the time it took
to impact the tree line...a distance which can be measured or
estimated.) Since I looked up and could get a "Sense" of color
and a "sense" of tumbling (due to watching shadows revolve, I
think) and also do to the whistling sound and the sense of time
involved for the sound to stike my ears in juxtaposition with
the image that hit my eyes, I was able, once again, to sense or
guess or estimate it's altitute. Based on that, and also since
I was able to track it for a few moments and could see its size
relative to the trees it was heading for, I was able to estimate
its size. Amazing what the human computer can do, huh?

304.16 | Perceptual illusion is likely. | PBSVAX::COOPER | Topher Cooper | Mon Sep 21 1987 11:44 | 31 |
| RE: .15
Frederick --
I'm afraid I'm going to have to take all your estimates of speed/size/
distance as perceptual illusion. I know the sense of distance was
quite distinct, but that is the nature of such illusions. Yes,
the human computer does amazing things, but it does it by making
convenient assumptions and then finding contradictions. An object
of unknown characteristics at a distance of greater than about
30 feet, suspended in the air, cannot be judged as to its distance.
Unless you actually saw the trees effected or distinctly occluded
by the object, your sense of the object "heading for the trees"
also cannot be relied on. Unless their were a number of distinct
visual events consistently associated with distinct audio events
(e.g., flash-boom sequences) the audio cues are also not reliable.
People frequently describe meteoretic fireballs in very similar
terms to your event, though they actually are taking place on the
fringe of the atmosphere 100 miles up (no I'm not saying that's
what you saw, I'm simply using it as an example of how easy it is
to fool the human perceptual apparatus in this kind of situation).
It is reasonable for you to feel that your perceptions were accurate,
but I cannot accept them as such. A sense of distance is based
on information and on assumptions as to how to interpret that
information. Nothing you have said leads me to the conclusion that
you *could* have had sufficient information to judge the distance
and thus the size and speed.

| As long as I don't have to eat some too. This is one of those cases
where I hope I'm wrong -- I'd love to know what it is you saw.
Keep in mind when searching, though, that an unusual object in the
region you search won't necessarily be what you saw. Back before
meteorites were considered real by the scientific community, and
for a while afterwards, after a meteorite fall, people would bring
in fossils, ancient coins, old stone tools, etc. convinced that
they were what they had seen fall.
When you go hunting for the object, bring a notebook and pencil
or a portable tape recorder (or both, you may want to sketch), and
a camera, preferably with a selection of lenses, also bring some
clean jars which you can put soil samples or whatever into.
Good luck.

I was not being a skeptic. Lets revisit the reply that Fredrick

To be honest, Fredrick, I give you credit for not trying to make
this siteing sound like a mystical experience as so often happens.
In doing so, however, the scene as described does resembele
that Monty Pithon skit. The reply did not strike me funny when
I read it, but when I saw the movie a few days later, I laughtd
'till I figured I'd split!

| RE: laughs!...there were quite a few in the last several...
very good!
Marion, you actually have the most "logical" explanation as
far as I am concerned. It is hard to see my 51-year-old pediatrician
neighbor loading up his old hand-me-down catapult and firing off
his even older, used rags over my head. And that's about what would
have had to transpire for a catapult to have been involved. (enter
grin and puzzlement symbol, here.)
I spent an hour and a half this morning searching what I felt
was the area into which I observed this "unknown projectile" descend.
The temperature was 90-95 degrees and it hasn't rained in over three
months (typical California summer, that) and the flies played their
parts really well and the scrub oak did it's best to fulfill its
role. All-in-all, it was yucky! I had to laugh at Topher's
suggestion when I just read it because it was all I could do to
hang on to the machete I had with me. There are vertical drops
of 40-50 feet in the terrain I was in and enough leaves to slip
down such a drop...very impractical area to carry expedition supplies
to. From the ground I could not see too well into some of the trees
but I could spot what I believe to be lots of quite large bird nests.
I found myself looking for feathers (in the belief that what I saw
was somehow a bird) but I found nothing in my sojourn of interest
(except some ancient beer can I never heard of with bullet holes
in it and three returnable Pepsi bottles.) So, Mary, I would be
more than happy to go into that area with my Camcorder (we don't
even have to rent one) with you. I don't know who would be interested
in the video tape we could make besides the Dejavuers, do you?
(enter the grin symbol of your choice, here.)
And, best of all (?) Topher, I saved you a dinner (and I would
rather have a pizza, anyway.)
I give up, I think...I will just have to let it be a mysterious
event in my life for which I will never have found a suitable
explanation.
(Hey, maybe Topher and Marion and Mary and I could share a
pizza and Monty Python and laugh at medieval ufo's.)
I really would like to find a ufo and I have not ruled this event
out as having that potential...maybe the next time it will be less
frustrating.

| You know, I don't know if I would *really* do this or not,
but I would like to believe that if I had intimate contact with
"aliens", and they did me no harm, that I would never contact either
the media or the "government." I think I would attempt to establish
a rapport and to let a few of my intimate friends know and that would
be it, for a while.
First thing you know people would be hovering and gathering
with all the latest military hardware, there would be cries of
world endings or messages from tv ministers telling us about the
Satanic invaders or some such.
I reported a "quasi" UFO a few months back, but it wasn't
significant enough to warrant the kind of discernment that I speak
of above.
Anyway, the gist is that I would encourage people to think at
least twice before "reporting" anything. I wouldn't hesitate to
ASK things of "sources", however.
