| She was on evening magazine last night! It was real interesting!
She believes that her and her daughter were mother and daughter
in another life! Only the daughter was the mother! Therefore she
has allowed her child to make all her own disicions when she turned
2 yrs. old!

| Now that _Out on a Limb_ has been aired, I'm wondering what people
thought of it.
I was very disappointed in the first segment...far too long, with
almost no substance. The second segment was much better...I especially
liked the special effects during her out of body experience.
Mostly I was disappointed in the book and the movie for the same
reasons--I really didn't care about her love affair, which is about
half of the telling. I wish she would have written more on psychic
stuff, or just written a short book. I found with both the book and the
TV show, I skimmed/fast forwarded (I had the foresight to tape the
show) through the boring parts. The movie could have easily been just
one 2-hour show.
One thing though, I'm glad that this was on national TV...maybe
it will get some people interested in psychic/spiritual books and
related things.
I couldn't help but wonder how fundamentalist xians reacted to some of
the stuff...especially when she stands on the beach yelling "I am god".
Any comments? Has anyone read any of her other books? Are they any
more interesting?

| I enjoyed the movie very much, but I agree that too much time was spent
with her relationship with Gerry. I think that if it really is her "job"
to get these ideas to the public, the movie did that. The concepts in this
movie are really foreign to the average American citizen and it would be
interesting to hear what people in general thought. I was impressed to
hear the the "trance channeling" sessions were not done by an actor but
by the trance channeler and spirits themselves. Shirley said in an interview
that the spirits actually knew that they would be recorded for TV. I will
definitely be reading _Dancing in the Light_ soon.

| I enjoyed the movie too! I have never been exposed to alot of what was
presented and now I can't keep my mind off it. Would those of you who
read "Out on a limb" recommend reading it now that I have seen the movie?
Or should I go on to Dancing in the light?
I have so many questions now that I don't know where to start.
I can't wait to get to the bookstore..but where do I begin?
Any suggestions for good introductory books on some of the concepts
explored in the movie?
I am really excited about this notesfile too!

I enjoyed the movie very much. There is always something that
can be criticized about everything and this movie has those
aspects. However, the important thing is that it was "on TV".
Ten years ago when I started looking into all of this stuff and
felt the same excitement and wanted to share it, I was put down
more often than I was accepted. When I read "Out on a Limb", I
finally felt affirmed. More people than I realized were actually
having the same experiences. It gave me the room to continue on.
The movie was fine the way it was because "it was her experience",
and I accept her experience just the way she shared it.

From an artistic point, I didn't care for the movie at all.
From a metaphysical point, it had some interesting material.
I would definitely recommend reading "Out On A Limb",even after
seeing the movie. I think it may make things clearer. Also, I
like the style in which it was written.
I also read "Dancing in the Light" and was somewhat disappointed.
There is alot less that happens. It mostly deals with what I would
describe as a watered down version of karma/reincarnation. Also, a section
of the book is lifted out of "Limb". Other people may have kinder
opinions than I do.
I was glued to the screen when they did the channeling. I am very
fascinated by that activity & have had some experience with it.
I'm looking forward to 20/20 to see how they cover the situation.

The best part of the "Dancing" was when she described her past life
recall sessions done with acupuncture.

| Re: .7
I, too, think you would enjoy reading the book, "Out On A Limb". I think
you'll get a lot more out of it, than the movie.
I enjoyed reading "Out On A Limb", and felt that Shirley was very open and
honest in it. Sometimes she seemed to get a bit dramatic, but that's
understandable and it didn't discourage me because her honesty was still
there.
Next, I read "Dancing In The Light". I remember Shirley saying that her
publishers had urged her to write another book after "Out On A Limb" because
a lot of people wanted to know more about HER...and her childhood...and her
personal life. I think this is what Shirley was trying to do in "Dancing
In The Light", and it's not what you would expect. I was very disappointed
and thought it was a big waste of time. In fact, I stopped reading after
awhile and started skipping through it...noticing parts about her
relationship with a man that seemed to have some real immaturity problems,
parts about her having tantrums and causing big scenes, one part about one
of the channeled entities stealing her purse (?!), and other seemingly useless
stuff like that. I didn't think this had much to offer. I wanted to hear
more about what she was learning from her psychic experiences.
At the end of "Dancing In The Light", Shirley told about her past-life
recall experience. That was kind of interesting, but then she talked about
"getting in touch" with a MAN, who talked to her and told her that he was
her "higher self"! Not only do I NOT believe that my "higher self" (whatever
the heck that's supposed to be) is DIFFERENT from me...but I just didn't
understand this belief at all, except that it seems Shirley just wants to
have bigger and "more exciting" experiences as time goes on. I'm not trying
to be cruel, but that kind of inner desire would fit someone who's in the
business of being in the "spotlight". I'm sure these experiences are very
real for Shirley, but a lot of things are real to a lot of people, and you
can't make religions or Gods out of other people's beliefs and experiences.
I still think Shirley has a lot to offer, but I think she's like anyone
else...she can get carried away with her own discoveries. One of the
channeled entities even told her that she tends to put more energy into the
"methods" instead of following the road. I read somewhere, maybe even in
"Out On A Limb" (I'm not sure)...it's like "climbing up the sign post instead
of following the road." Shirley is no exception...and I hope that people will
take the valuable stuff she has to say and sort it apart from the other stuff
that's just her "own trip".
As for what I thought of the movie, I thought Part II was interesting, but
I thought the whole thing was very marketed. There were things in the movie
that the book didn't have (and since they seemed to be significant parts...
you'd wonder why the book didn't mention them at all....and perhaps they
were just added in for "effect".) Also, some of the sequencing of events
was changed in the movie. If they wanted to tell a true story, they should
have stuck to the facts. Anything else might be misleading.
I'm glad that she's brought this subject to t.v., and I'm excited to see
how many people it "gets thinking". I'm sure there will be extremists, there
always are. But hopefully, this will be another little push to get the big
ball rolling. She said she's going to be giving seminars too, so I think she's
going to be in the news for awhile.

284.12 | Higher and higher? | ORION::HERBERT | Wherever you go, there you are! | Thu Jan 22 1987 20:08 | 18 |
| Re: .11
I am not disputing the concept of personification of archetypal forms. I
think people can create anything they need to, or perceive anything they need
to, including things that may be outside of their own ego...and I know these
things are very real to them.
What I did not agree with was the reference of a "higher self" being separate
from oneself.
To me, this idea suggests that there is a part of us which is separate and
"higher", and therefore our conscious mind is somehow "lower". Since our
conscious mind is doing the perceiving, this would seem contradictory.
I just don't believe that there's a part of myself that's higher than me.

284.13 | What now, Shirley? | HARDY::BERNSTEIN | Deconstructive Grammatologist | Fri Jan 23 1987 13:42 | 23 |
| Well, I thought this movie was wonderful. I only saw it on Monday
night, but it was definately the part I was meant to see. I couldn't
believe they were saying all of these great things on national
television, and the OOBE was amazing.
I would hope the next step she takes is starting to put all
of these into fiction more carefully tailored to teach the principles
than dramatizations of her own life...but by saying it as she is,
I think there are a lot of people who will give the ideas some credence
who wouldn't if it were said in a different way.
Anyway, I want to talk to her, or at least write her a letter.
But the commercials during the show were TERRIBLE! Some parts
of the show, I actually felt spiritual energy pouring out...I could
feel it entering my forehead (3rd eye) and tingling my lips. I tried
some meditational exercises quite successfully...but the commercials
kept bringing me out of it. All this stuff about "A1 Steak Sauce"
and some of the stupidest car ads I've ever seen.

| I agree completely with .8, I treated the movie as her experience
to tell the way she experienced it . One concept that I am beginning
to understand about all this is that each person must see these
things in their own way . Perhaps if we were identical people we
might have identical perceptions, I'm glad we have the variety .
