283.17 | Wider survey? | HUDSON::STANLEY | Not Fade Away | Tue Jan 13 1987 09:57 | 6 |
| I was thinking that it would be interesting to post this survey
in some other conference(s). I'm not sure which ones would be most
appropriate but maybe SOAPBOX, HOLISTIC, etc. That way we would
have a wider, less biased view.

283.18 | WHY SOAPBOX, AND WHERE'S THE BIAS? | EDEN::KLAES | Alchemists get the lead out. | Tue Jan 13 1987 10:10 | 5 |

their experiences in this topic, if they want to.

283.19 | | HUDSON::STANLEY | Not Fade Away | Tue Jan 13 1987 11:04 | 9 |
| re: .18
I only gave SOAPBOX as an example because it has a wide readership.
The bias is that this is a conference for people who have an interest
in psychic phenomena and that will reflect in the survey. I thought
other conferences would offer many different attitudes that would be
interesting to compare to DEJAVU's.
Dave
|
283.20 | RE 283.19 | EDEN::KLAES | Alchemists get the lead out. | Tue Jan 13 1987 11:46 | 6 |
| The only problem is that most of the people on SOAPBOX tend to
either take things too seriously, or not seriously enough, and I
have the sad feeling they would trash such a poll.
Larry
|
283.21 | Let's keep it here. | PBSVAX::COOPER | Topher Cooper | Tue Jan 13 1987 11:53 | 14 |
| It would be very difficult to get anything approaching an unbiased
survey under these conditions. Those who would choose to reply
would tend to be those with a strong opinion, and a desire to present
it. "Real" surveys take this into account (partially) by knowing
what percentage of the people asked actually responded. In this
case, we do not know how many people wouldn't have bothered to respond.
I think it is much more interesting to see how a particular *biased*
group that we are interested in (DEJAVU readers) respond. There
isn't much we can conclude from this about general populations or
even readers of DEJAVU, but it does give us a certain amount of
"feel" for our fellows.

If you want to get input from people that don't normally read this
conference, you should duplicate the questions. I think there is
a greater chance of people answering the questions if they don't
have to go to another conference.

You and Topher have made good points. Another option is
to have a cut off date for Dejavu-ers only and then enter it
in other notes files.
We should consider the attention this action would have on
folk we may or may not be interested in drawing or
refocusing to this conference.

Personally I think that would be interesting,
nice approach. I still encourage giving
Dejavu-ers some time before putting it somewhere
else. Someone said we'd only get those with
strong opinions.....I agree. The only
thing we'll really find out is how many Dec-ies
fall into these categories...which is interesting
in itself.

283.30 | Anonymity | PBSVAX::COOPER | Topher Cooper | Wed Jan 14 1987 11:40 | 17 |
| RE: various previous notes.
One additional problem with taking a survey through NOTES is anonymity
(or the lack thereof). Statements of belief in the occult,
supernatural, or paranormal may result in discrimination. This
is going to skew surveys, particularly those in other conferences.
(Which is not to say that I don't believe that there are people
out there reading DEJAVU who are uncomfortable about posting here
and therefore identifying themselves. Once again I will renew my
offer to post anonymously anything anyone sends me for that purpose
-- I promise complete confidentiality).
I would therefore recommend a mail address for people to send their
responses if they do not wish to be identified publicly. I don't
know how much this will offset the bias.

I can see that my attempt to cover all bases (as far as
answers go) has not been exactly overwhelmingly successful,
based on some of the "none of the above" answers and other
off-line MAIL exchanges I have had with some folks. If I
had to do it over, I would add an answer that equated to
"{none of the above | I felt your phrasing of the question
was invalid | not applicable | no opinion}" for BOTH of the
questions.
Just to try to promote some of the answers to question 2. as
possibly more palatable to those who find them lacking:
C) could also reasonably include an approach such
as "I feel religion is irrelevant or
otherwise not an appropriate framework
for viewing psychic/spiritual/psychological
phenomena" as well as just "atheist" or
"agnostic"
D) could definitely be construed to include much
newer "traditions" than the old "pagan" or
"tribal" belief systems: for instance,
neo-pagan, Theosophical, Rosicrucian,
Eckanar, etc.--really any coherent spiritual
philosophy that is shared by some number of
people (i.e., it doesn't have to be "ancient"
or even "old" to be a tradition)
E) could include folks who have incorporated beliefs
from A) through D) but who believe they have
a unique slant on those beliefs that is not
really shared by any group of people
I was torn between D) and E) myself, and finally recorded
myself as F), figuring that if I was REALLY decided about it
I wouldn't be having such a hard time picking one.

I meant to add "that is outside any of the so-called 'mainstream'
traditions" somewhere in there.
BTW, 32032:: is actually MERCY::, clustered with CGHUB::, (DMATE's
network database has apparently missed a coupla updates), if
anyone wants to send me MAIL with suggestions, explanations or
criticisms for the NEXT survey!:-) (I think the consensus was
not to go with the idea of expanding this survey into other
conferences, so as not to attract "harassing"-type people back here.)
