254.0. "<THERE IS A GHOST OF A CHANCE>" by BIGMAC::CANTON () Wed Dec 03 1986 16:43
Ah the supernatural one of favorite topics of lively conversation.
I grew up on the island of Bermuda, and during a few of my younger
years, lived in an old arm hospital that after World War I had been
converted into a private home. It was quite the place, 12 foot
ceilings, huge solid wood doors with doorknobs that were located
in the middle of the doors, a height that was unattainable for anyone
under the footage of 4'. My mother is part and parcile of a family
that has always been involved with the spirt world, she grew up
in a house in New York that was well known in it's area for having
poltergist, some of them not so harmless, but all entertaining.
The females in our family all have the "gift" some of us better
than others, and always stronger between family members, but still
relatively accurate with outsiders. The house I started writing
about was ripe for ghosts that go bump in the night and assorted
other fuzzy things. One of my favorite episodes was the night my
father woke up to find what he took to be one of my younger brothers
age 3, standing at the side of their bed, following an almost nightly
routine, my father got up, picked the child up and took him into
the bathroo., When he arrived at the bathroom and was about to put
the child down, he discovered that there was now no child in his
arms to deposit onto the bathroom floor. Slightly taken aback,
he ventured into my brothers room to find both of them sleeping
soundly. It was this incident that finally made a believer out
of my father, who up until this point he had been more than sceptical
of the number of other similar occurances that my mother and I had
both experienced. We also had a sobbing woman, an invisible visitor
that made his/her presence known by sitting in the exact same chair
at the exact same time every night for about a month, we knew someone
was there from the feeling of very cold air that accompanies these
spiritual beings and the seat of the chair sinking into the shape
it takes when weight has been applies to it. We tried on numerous
occasions to converse with this visitor to no avail. When he/she
stopped it's nightly visits, we found ourselves missing his/her
company. There are numerous other stories, daytime ghosts, unplugged
electric coffee pots jumping on kitchen counters, etc. etc. All
in all my formative years were extremely interesting. I no longer
live in an environment that affords me the company of (for lack
of a better word) ghosts, and I must say that I find myself missing
their presence. At most times the feeling they gave was one of
comfort. I have heard some real horror stories about poltergist
etc. and have been very lucky to have never really made their
acquaintence. For the record, non of my encounters even slightly
resembled Casper.
