210.0. "Cleansing through visualization" by MILRAT::KEEFE () Wed Sep 24 1986 23:02

[This is related to note 206, in that it discusses how colors might
be used.]

Just as one takes a shower to cleanse the outside of the body, likewise
one may take an inner shower to literally wash away all undesirable
negative vibration. This inner cleansing can be done in variety of ways,
but two of the simplest and most effective means are: visualization and
harmonics. Both of these techniques are effective preparation for
meditation or prayer and should rightfully be used to cleanse and align
body and mind.

Visualization is the creation of a viable mental picture representative
of one's current state and the state one seeks to achieve. For example, a
person suffering from scoliosis (curvature of the spine) would create a
visualization around a mental picture of a beautifully straight or
appropriately curved spine. Visualization is an intense tool because, as
simple as it seems, its effectiveness in adjusting the program and actual
physical functioning of the body is unequaled. The conscious mind and
subsequently the conscious body become aware through visualization of the
potential perfect functioning of an organ an can then see what has to be
changed to create that condition. The body often allows disease to exist by
failing to recognize a condition as untenable, maybe even life-threatening,
until suddenly the disease arrives full-blown in the physical.
Visualization helps the patient crystallize his own conception of his
condition, be it minimal, moderate or severe. This crystallization
increases the body's awareness, thus pictorially plugging in awareness of
the ongoing physical and mental picture and altering the current physical
condition in favor of the desired outcome.

Along with visualization, an understanding of color is helpful in
arriving at the most specific explanation possible of one's total
well-being. Color is a diagnostic as well as a therapeutic tool. What
colors an individual sees when quietly sitting with his eyes closed are
significant in defining his current mental and physical condition.
Different colors are seen in dreams, daydreams and meditations and
represent one's physical, emotional and spiritual condition. The colors one
sees can also be the tools the body and mind suggest to change an already
existing condition. In other words, one may see a color as the result of a
current condition or as the means to eliminate that condition. One should
try to be aware of the different colors which play in and out of one's
quiet times and draw one's own conclusions about which colors correspond to
which of one's own moods, physical condition, and the play of outside
circumstance. No two people's responses will be exactly the same.

Visualization can be used effectively by the allopathic and holistic
physician to further intensify and integrate treatment. While less
traditional forms of healing use color as a diagnostic and therapeutic
tool, traditional medicine is currently also using visualization to
increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation, reaffirming the
premise that the degree of mind and body working together can augment or
retard even traditional chemical treatment.

210.1Visualization -- psychological benifitsPBSVAX::COOPERTopher CooperThu Sep 25 1986 12:4120
Visualization is certainly a *very* powerful technique. It is
useful psychologically as well as psychically.

For example, if you want to loose weight, one useful technique is
to visualize yourself as thin. This may help psychically of course
but I'm talking about another level of effect. It may help directly
-- mobilizing the body to eliminate the fat, but it also helps
    psychologically.

A major problem in making change is confidence. Seeing really is,
at least partially, believing. If you can visualize a change, then
you can believe in the change. And belief that change is possible
is the first step to achieving that change.

One of the most useful aspects of hypnosis, much more useful than
the rather small increase in "suggestability" for most people, is
the intensification of imagery. It is through imagery that most
    hypnotic benifit comes about.

210.2Some visualizations to tryLEZAH::BOBBITTchanges fill my time...Mon Jan 08 1990 16:19263

These visualizations are paraphrased, shortened, and extracted from an
appendix in Bernie S. Sigel's "Peace, Love and Healing" (sequel to
"Love, Medicine, and Miracles"). These were the four visualizations he
had in the book, although I'm sure they can be altered and changed each
time you use them to become many more. I enter them here for you to
peruse, and try if you wish. They're extremely useful, and can be
changed to suit your own needs. A formfeed will precede each one, to
keep them separate for you. Also, where there are blank spaces between
the lines or paragraphs in the visualizations, these are times where
you pause in the visualization and give yourself time (however much it
takes) to do what the visualization suggests, or your own version of
what it suggests. Also, if any of you have visualizations you enjoy,
    I'd love to see more....

    Enjoy!

    Visualization I

Relax, in whatever way you wish - relax your body and breathe deeply.

Clean your mental slate, and prepare your head and heart for new
    lessons.

Visualize a quiet place, a comfortable place, a "nest" where you can
truly relax. Picture yourself relaxing there and eliminating any
current problems which interfere with your life now.

Dress yourself in the weave and fabric of your life. If it has holes
or is threadbare, reweave it with your love and energy. Is the fabric
of your life different from last time you were here? Why?

Picture yourself in a field, with whatever trees and grasses you wish.
In your mind, build a bridge from where you are to where you'd like to
be. What does the bridge look like, feel like? Why? Notice any
changes in the bridge since you were last here - are there any?

As you cross the bridge and start down the path on the other side,
relate to the people in your life who appear there. Touch them, talk
with them, share with them as you wish.

As you walk down the path, you'll see a house with a garden and porch.
This is your house, and it will look however you wish it to look. Walk
into the house, through to the living room. There's a chest there. In
that chest is what your heart wants to give or tell you. Open it and
    see.

Take its gift and message, and make it a part of you.

Return out the front door to the garden. Find a seed there, and a
place to plant it in your garden. Plant it to make more beauty in the
    world.

After burying the seed, become the seed. Feel how it is to be under
the earth, but do not fear. You can feel which way to grow and which
    way to put down roots.

Put down roots to give yourself nourishment and strength. Grow and
push aside obstacles and problems until you break forth from the earth
into the sun and stretch your limbs to the sky.

Grow and bloom. Become the unique individual that you already are.
Then make the flower a part of you.

Continue on your journey. Come to a safe and quiet place. Walk
through yourself, into yourself. Harmonize yourself and make yourself
whole however it's needed. Create a new self with your love and
    energy.

Look in a mirror at your new self. Embrace the new self. Accept the
new self. Become the new self.

    Return to yourself and awake.

    Visualization II

Relax, in whatever way you wish - relax your body and breathe deeply.

As you cross the bridge and start down the path on the other side.
Follow your path. If it divides, you'll know which turn is yours.

You'll see a child coming towards you. The child is you. Give the
child what she or he needs. Go with the child and be the child for a
time. Experience joy as the child, play or learn or grow or adventure
    or discover for yourself.

Become one with the child and return to the path. There is an elevator
beside the path. The elevator is at the number "'90". Take the
elevator back through the years to a year that is vital to you. When
you get there, stop the elevator and step out into the voices and
scents and sights. You will experience, and heal, and love.

Return to the elevator. Go to the ground floor. The elevator is
always there for you. Follow the path you see.

Come to the shore. Watch the seagulls, and fly with them. Let go of
    all weight, all problems.

Return to alight on the shore. Walk through yourself. Harmonize
yourself and make yourself whole. Create a new self. Take in the
light and love that is around you. Take this light and love into your
chest, and be aware of it with every breath you take.

    Return to yourself and awake.

    Visualization III

    Relax...

Clean your mental slate, and prepare your head and heart for new
    lessons.

Put up an empty movie screen in your mind, and relax further.

    Step into the movie screen.

Travel down the path. Come to a forest glade. There is a stone pool.
Remove your fabric and enter the warm and healing waters.

Turn over and look down. See what is there at the bottom for you.
What is at the bottom of all this? Do not be afraid. Reach down and
    fish out what is yours.

Become aware of what you've found. Bring it to the edge of the pool,
and make it part of yourself.

Step out of the pool. Dry off in the sunlight and dress yourself.
    Continue on the path.

You come to an outdoor theatre. All the people in your life are
sitting there. Let them know what you want them to know by performing.
It's your stage and your show.

When you are done, come down to the audience and see how they respond
to you. How does it feel? Who is there? What have they seen and
    heard?

Return to your path. You'll see a very bright light on your path. You
may see a figure coming out of that light, coming towards you. As they
get closer, you'll see more clearly what they look like, and what kind
of feeling comes with them. You'll learn their name.

They are your guide. Ask your guide about any questions or problems or
conflicts you've been having in your life.

If no one appears from out of the light, turn and look at the shadow
which the light creates behind you. Look at your shadow, and speak
with it. Learn from it, and receive its guidance.

    Visualization IV

    Relax...

Clean your mental slate, and prepare your head and heart for new
    lessons.

Put up an empty movie screen in your mind, and relax further.

Step into the movie screen. Relax and restore yourself with self-love
    and self-appreciation.

Cross the bridge and start on your path. The path leads up a mountain.
Equipment and tools are there if you need them. Be aware of how you
overcome obstacles and progress to the top.

When you come to the top, enjoy your achievement, and give yourself
credit for having reached the top.

You'll see a rainbow-colored balloon with a big basket beneath. It is
totally safe. Climb in and let it rise.

The breeze will carry you up. You'll feel trouble-free and weightless.
Go up, up, until the ground is small. Problems seem small from up
here. If you have any problems, write them down with the pad and
pencil beside you. Let them go. Relax. Feel free.

Come down gradually, slowly, safely. Touch down beside your path and
    climb out.

Think for a moment - if you could be any creature you could, what would
you be? What other animal or person? Become that animal or person and
    enjoy.

Ask the animal or person you've become what you have experienced, and
what you can learn from it. Listen carefully to its answer.

    Come back into yourself.

Continue down the path. Where does the path lead? As you pause to
look, put a message on a blank billboard next to the path. Use the
billboard to express what you'd like other people who come this way to
know. Paint, write, draw, or design whatever you wish.

Return to the path. The path goes into a dark tunnel going into the
next mountain. But there's light at the end. Enter the tunnel.

The tunnel is dark and cool and damp. You may stumble a bit or bump
into the walls, but if you just focus on the light, you'll reach it
okay. It is like learning to walk or ride a bicycle. You get up and
    try again, you overcome obstacles.

You come out into the light. Your family and friends are there. How
do they see you? What will you share with them after your experience?
Exchange feelings and views and words.

Bring your loved ones around you. Let them love and heal you. Accept
their warmth and let it change you. Take a look at yourself. Have you
    changed?

Bring the changes back with you, to the now.

    Return to yourself, and awake.
