To the Moderator and all readers of this conference, 1986 has been declared the International Year of Peace. The main content of this note is the "Million Minutes of Peace Appeal" which asks people everywhere to pledge prayer, meditation, or silent thoughts of peace between September 16 and October 16 of this year. If any of you believe that this is not appropriate content for this conference, I give the moderator full permission to delete or hide the note ... or, contact me by MAIL and (if I can't convince you that the note belongs here) I'll delete it myself. On the other hand, if you are favorably inclined toward the appeal, SAVE or FORWARD (to yourself and like-minded friends) the note. There's a "pledge card" (for thought NOT money) in the appeal. I've posted this message in the following conferences: - BAGELS - BIBLE - CHRISTIAN - DEJAVU - HUMAN_RELATIONS - PHILOSOPHY - RELIGION If you know of any other conference for which this appeal is appropriate content, feel free to copy it there. If you are a reader of several of these conferences, I apologize for the redundancy ... I believe that this is an important message to spread and that VAXNotes and the EasyNet is a great way to spread it. Thanks, Peace, and Love, Terry A minute of peace is a truth that the hands can touch. -- Ben Kingsley Y O U R T H O U G H T S The Million Minutes of Peace An International Appeal C O U N T ! Around the world, groups are gathering to promote THE MILLION MINUTES OF PEACE APPEAL. All countries are being invited to participate between September 16 and October 16, 1986. The minutes committed to prayer, meditation, and thoughts of peace will be counted and reported to the United Nations on its anniversary in October. The concept is simple: Decide how many minutes -- from one to thirty -- you will spend per day, per week, or totally in silent meditation, prayer, or thoughts of peace for that one month. Return the reply coupon as your commitment. Then do it. Every individual who participates is adding to the ripples of peace. First there is the personal benefit -- restoring the soul, reviving hope, bringing peace of mind. With these powers you are in a position to give peace to others, and through them to spread that energy across the planet. YOUR THOUGHTS COUNT, and your minute makes a difference. Groups who participate add up even faster, but the power lies initially in each of us as individuals. Encourage any organization you belong to -- social, professional, religious -- to take part in this worldwide program. Simply call or write and reply cards will be sent in any quantity you request, or you may reproduce this page or the coupon below. I shall pray much for the success of For there to be lasting peace the this event. Specially that it may hearts of people must be changed ... lead people to prayerful silence, And the only heart we can directly for the fruit of prayer is faith, change is our own. Peace is not the fruit of faith is love, the something we can graft on from the fruit of love is service. outside; it must be a growth from -- Mother Teresa within. -- Dennis Weaver Civilization can develop only in an environment of peace. Peace must begin with each one of us. -- Perez de Cuellar, United Nations Secretary-General (Just cut along dotted line and mail coupon.) re .2: This was _supposed_ to say: The thought is laudable, and vthe prayer/meditation/etc. certainly won't hurt. However, it's somewhat ironic that it starts on a Tuesday, which tradition associates with Mars, god of War. Steve Kallis, Jr.

In fact, I belong to a group that has been doing that for 1 hour per week for over three years. Still, a little more certainly won't hurt. Let there be peace on earth, Kathleen

Thought that you might be interested in a letter that I received earlier this week ... Dear Friend, Thanks to your many dedicated moments of peace for the world, the MILLION MINUTES OF PEACE has reached its goal. As of Oct. 3, Mass. has collected 1,105,596 minutes. This is outstanding testimony to the fact that there are a lot of people who are committed to making the way they think count. Thoughts DO count, whether they originate in prayer, positive contemplation or meditation. St. Francis' Day Shelter for the Homeless has collected 31,000 minutes from their regular daily prayer; The Boston Actor's Institute has donated 1 minute from every class; Lancaster prison, has collected over 150,000 -as well as hosting a program in which 34 people had a chance to discuss and experience peace in a new way. The Paulist Center has donated 3,400 minutes, joining their celebration with the thousands of other communities worldwide, celebrating the right to peace. The congregation at the Jewish Young Adults Center will donate 2 minutes of prayer to the Appeal during the High-Holiday Services. And the Peace Pagoda has committed itself to 64,000. But above all, the most powerful inspiration to the Appeal has come from the hundreds who have, of their own initiative, invested their time. The thousands of minutes collected through this avenue confirms that it is within the individual heart and mind that peace begins. That to be positive about peace is to appreciate all the work that is being done to make the world an easier place to live. That although I may not be able to stop war or terrorism, I can change my own thoughts and feelings, and in that experience, enhance my own commitment to peace. That to fill my attitude and action with peace allows me to share that with others. And that through our combined positive thoughts of peace we can then actively work together towards a united and peaceful world. On behalf of the Boston Committee I'd like to thank you for making the dream of a million minutes of peace a reality. Warmly, Sharonah Stillerman I'd like to add my thanks to all of you who have sent in pledges. (My wife, Linda Boyer, tabulated 961,695 minutes on her Apple IIc ... I saw several coupons from VAXNotes and the Vogon News Service and recognized names of several members of the Digital family ... there were pledges from England, Columbia, and Peru ... the EasyNet spans the whole world) I'd like to add my special thanks to Jan Benton who forwarded the appeal to the Vogon News Service and the VNS editors for accepting it. Finally, before everyone sprains his or her arm with a personal pat on the back, I'd like to issue a final challenge ... ... if you have not yet pledged time in meditation, prayer, or thoughts of peace, there's still time. The coupon in the base note accommodates TOTAL minutes pledged. Even 5 or 10 more in the next few days will be meaningful (assuming that 5% of Digital employees use VAXNotes and the Vogon News Service; and that 5% of those folks read these Conferences or the VNS; and that each reader contributes 5 more minutes ... that's 1000 to 1250 more minutes). Let's surprise Sharonah during these last few days ... spread the word ... tell your friends (what the heck, this is about Peace ... tell your enemies too.) Peace, Love, and all the Blessings of the Creator, Terry
