| My feelings about numerology are mixed, but a few experiences are
perhaps worth recounting.
I was Class of 59 from my college. This number has popped up from
time to time. Both my first work of fiction and my first factual
article in _Astounding/Analog_ both started on page 59 when they
appeared; and at the time, the editor was on a numerology kick:
he did not know until two years after the factual article appeared
that I was Class of 59.
When I was first a Midshipman, my serial-number equivalent was 4784;
my Digital badge is 4874.
Oddly, in numerological terms, both numbers reduce to 5. The number
of letters in my current nickname.

| I met someone a few years back who claimed that numerology was
really the basis for astrology. He owned several reference books
on the subject, which I can find the titles if anyone is
interested.
Incidentally, I am also enrolled in a course (coming in May) that
will examine the relation of numerology to astrology. I can do
a "trip report" for anyone who is interested. Or, if you want to
take the course yourself, call:

100.4 | Numerological Tarot work | NATASH::BUTCHART | | Wed Jul 02 1986 13:50 | 43 |
| I learned an interesting way to use your birthday numerologically
to find the Tarot card that you can use as your Significator. Method
#1 I saw described in a book; Method #2 is my own invention. I
found the cards to be strongly related to ideals and inner states
of mind that have been with me for what seems like forever.
Method #1: Add you entire birth date (month, day, year) in
numerological fashion and reduce it until the resulting
number corresponds with one of Major Arcana numbers
(1 - 22, 22 being equivalent to The Fool).
January 16, 1951
1 + 1 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 5 + 1 = 24
2 + 4 = 6
The Major Arcana card that corresponds numerologically
to this birth date is The Lovers. This number, accor-
ding to the place I learned it from, is indicative of
your soul state, or inner state.
Method #2: Just add your birth month and day numerologically.
Reduce the number, if necessary, until you have the
number of the corresponding Major Arcana card. This
is often a different card from the Method 1 card. It
seems, in the people I've tried it for (including my-
self), to represent personality characteristics that
the person feels are very good, and likes to work to
cultivate. A card that perhaps represents an ideal
vision of self.
January 16
1 + 1 + 6 = 8
The Major Arcana card is Strength, or, if you use the
Crowley deck, Adjustment. The person who this example
is based on felt that both applied.
I'll be interested to see what people feel about this. Try it and
see.

| Re:100.1
I've noticed that my best freinds phone number has the same last
4 digits (but in different order) -- my brothers phone # in hudson
NH has the same last 4 digits as my aunt in Poland Spring, ME (4907).
Several years ago I worked at Peter Christians Rest. in Hanover,
NH and the last 4 dig.s were 2345, my home # at that time was 3254!!
On another tack -- I was at a party once and was admiring the lizards
in a terrarium with two other people. It turned out that were all
born December 2nd (different years, but still)...I thought it was
quite a coincidence.
Hmm, I wonder if there is a coincidence file???? janice "bucky"

I don't believe in coincidence so I don't believe in a coincidence
file either! (-:

Re:100-4
If your birth month is ie. Dec. do you add it as 12 or 1 + 2?
Actually, nevermind, I just realized one way it's 35, the other
way it's 26--both ways it's 8!

| re last several:
I once saw a mathematical demonstration that if you choose 40 people
at random (or have a party with 40 or more guests) that the
probabilities are close to unity that at least two of them will
have the same birthday.
It was an elegant proof, but one it's easy to verify yourself.

| RE: .8
Yeah, that effect is usually called the "Birthday Paradox" (paradox
in this case is used in the sense of "contradicting intuition" rather
than the more common sense of "self contradictory").
The proof is not only elegant but easy to understand without much
mathematics, and fairly short. I can post it if people are interested
(PLEASE -- send me mail by saying SEND/AUTHOR, don't waste peoples
time with "please do" notes).
In the usual sense of "close to unity" however, 40 people doesn't
make it. Assuming that people are equally likely to be born on
any day of the year, you will be only 90% sure that if you have
40 people that at least two of them will have the same birthday.
Of course, the fact that peoples birthdays cluster a fair amount,
ups the probability some, but I doubt if it goes over 95% for 40
people.
The Birthday Paradox is frequently stated in terms of their being
a "better than 50% chance of there being at least two people out
of 23 with the same birthday." This means that if you were to
repeatedly bet "even" money on this under these conditions, you
would make money in the long run, but most people who are willing
to bet on things will take you up on it.

100.10 | Tarot & Numerology | WIENER::SCHUBERT_K | Darksome Night and Shining Moon ... | Thu Jan 25 1990 15:21 | 74 |
| re: .4
I don't know if anyone is still reading this file, it has been
inactive for quite a long time.
Anyway, here goes my 1st contribution to DEJAVU ...
I also learned a way to determine personal Tarot-Cards from
a book named "Tarot Constellations" by Mary K. Greer.
It's very similar to the one discribed in .4 but perhaps a bit
more detailed:
1. Personality Card
Add your day, month and year of birth and reduce the result
to a number between 1 - 22 (22 also beeing the Fool)
e.g. 17
03
1965
----
1985 = 23 (5 > 22) = 5 --> The Hierophant
2. Soul Card
Reduce the result again if it's got 2 digits.
In my case this is not possible so it stays
5 --> The Hierophant
3. Card of the Year
Add your day and month of birth to the actual year
and reduce the result if necessary (as in 1. & 2.)
e.g. 17
03
1990
----
2010 = 3 --> The Emporess
This card is ment to tell you what topics will strongly
influence you this year, what concerns you might have,
what you will experience and what you should develope.
Last year was my year of The High Priestess - that's
why I found DEJAVU ...
It is recommended that you calculate your Card of the Year
for the past and the next few years so you can see what
has influenced you in the past and what you might
"carry along" with you.
There is also a 4th card called the Shadow Card corresponding
to your Soul and Personality Card (mine is 14 --> Adjustment)
but I forgot how you determine this one (I'll look it up
if anyone is interested in this.)
You can determine cards for your name using the numbers
corresponding to the hebrew alphabet, there are also
Melody Cards and so on and so on (the book is really
interesting if you are into this)
I found these cards very accurate and the thing is that what
I get from the cards is almost the same as my mother gets when
she does a horoscope (sp.?) for someone we both don't know
(of course the horoscope is a bit more precise).
I would appreciate very much if we could get this
discussion going again - I sure will enter something else
at a later time (got to go)
bye,
Karin
p.s. can someone give me an advise where (or whom) I could
ask something about a Wiccan Rune ??? tks
