92.0. "The Law (_not_ cosmic)" by PEN::KALLIS () Tue Mar 18 1986 09:35

Psychic activity can be regulated. I don't mean mentally or
supernaturally, but legally. I'm opening this note to see if we
    can collect some examples.

    My contribution:

If you're a practicing fortuneteller (Tarot, astrologer, tea-leaf
reader, sand reader, etc.), you're required by law to have a license,
if you practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The license
fee is to be established by the town or city where one practices
    (default =$2.00).

Them law is on the books, but it is rarely enforced. One of the
few times I know of its being so was when an acquaintence of mine,
who runs an occult shop, was being "investigated" by the local police
(after he was unable to contribute to the Policeman's Benefit Fund)
-- he was raided twice. He asked his readers to get licenses; when
they went to their local town halls, the officials said, "You've
got to be kidding!" But they got their licenses.

Note 93.1 Laws against New Age Activities. 1 of 1

Ok folks the public law in Manitou Springs wasn't exactly what I thought
it was going to be.

The law is under fortune telling and is 9.44.010 in the city ordinances.
It says:
No person shall pratice or exercise the vocation or calling of clairvoyancy
palmistry, mesmerism, fortune telling, astrology, seership, or like crafty
science, readings, sittings or exhibitions of like charactor within the city
and for which a fee or charge is made or excepted. It is further unlawful
for any person to advertise that he carries on or conducts a vocation or
calling described hereinabove within the city. Any and all persons convicted
hereunder shall be fined in the sum of not less than ten dollars nor more than
300 hundred dollars. (Ord 15, series 1967 SS 20.)

Steve has suggested a topic on laws affecting religious activities. So lets
also consider laws affecting economic activities that nontraditional
religious groups may rely upon for modes of living.
Mr. Moderator please move this to note 92. Thanx.

92.2Anti Voodoo lawsBISON::DENHAMLife is complex; it has real and imaginary partsWed Mar 19 1986 11:267
There are laws in most southern states forbidding the use of snakes
in religious worship. The reason for these laws is actually to forbid
the practice of Voodoo. I'll post another note about this religion
    when I have more time

I believe bthis also inhibits some of the fringe Christian cults
that go into ecstasies, "Speak with tongues," and hold snakes in
    their mouths.

92.4A New Cotton Mather?PEN::KALLISThu Mar 20 1986 10:4913
According to news items in the 20 March _Boston Globe_, a UPI story
concerns the surprise primary upset in the Democratic primary for
the candidate for Lieutenant Governor. The victor, Mark Fairchild,
is reportedly a supporter of Lyndon Larouche, who's been described
as a political extremist. The interesting point for_this_ note
is that one of the candidate's stated positions is reported to be
to "... vigorously investigate witchcraft and cults."

Anybody have any more information on the Fairchild or LaRouche position
    on this?

These Larouche people seem to be John Birchers in disguise Steve.
They show many of the marks of the aforementioned group. It will
be fun to see what happens up there. I have many friends who are
ex Birchers who show the same emotional and political stands. After
all the tri-laterals are going to get all of us.

Did this become law, Jym? I was watching for it, but lost it
somewhere along the line. I don't know if it passed, or not. I doubt
it would survive a constitutional challenge.

Mark, I helped alot of other people raise an objection to the
Helms amendment to that particular law. The Coalition of Religious
Freedom in D.C. was insturmental in having that tossed out.
I think it was tossed out in Committee before it every got to
the house. Anyway I feel sure that Helms will raise it again
somehwere else. Keep an open eve.

Just for the record.... here in Houston, you can carry your six-shooter
into a bar, but not a tarot deck (unless you have a license). The
people at city hall didn't even know how to provide a license.
