75.1 | Moody Blues | LASSIE::TBAKER | | Mon Feb 03 1986 16:49 | 36 |
| I'd be interested in some of those lyrics. Could you type some
of Stevie Nicks into the note?
The first other group that comes to mind is the Moody Blues. Their
earlier stuff is absolutely filled with psychic references. Some
titles:
(Thinking is) The Best Way to Travel. (Search for the Lost Chord)
The Word (Search for the Lost Chord)
Between the eyes and ears there lies,
The sounds of color, and the light of a sigh.
.
To know ultra violet, infra red and x-ray
Beauty to find in so many way.
.
And to hear the Sun, what a thing to believe
But it's all around, if we could but perceive.
Clearly talking about clairvoyance.
Legend of a Mind (same album)
He'll fly his astral plan
Take you trips around the bay
Bring you back the same day
Timothy Leary
Visions of Paradise
Voices in the Sky
I guess In Search for the Lost Chord was their main psychic offering.
From there some of the Moody Blues went more into spirituality and
others into romance.

| Some of you might have guessed that I would think of the Grateful
Dead. I've entered some lyrics from the song "Box of Rain".
What do you want me to do, to watch for you while you're sleepin'?
Then please don't be surprised when you find me dreamin' too.
Look into any eyes you find by you,
you can see clear to another day.
Maybe been seen before,
through other eyes on other days while goin' home.
What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago.

Rather than type in the lyrics, I will suggest several of her songs
that you can "study".
In particular...
Rhiannon (sp) and Sister of the Moon (Fleetwood Mac)
Gypsy (Fleetwood Mac - Mirage) **
Gold Dust Woman (Tusk)
Edge of 17 (Rumors, I think) ***** this is a great tune all around
Beauty and the Beast (SN- The Wild Heart)
I suggest you listen closely if you can (or better yet get a copy
of the lyrics. Look for the songs written only by Stevie. Some of
the meaning is hidden and subtle.
If you can't do this, let me know and I will put in a sample or
two along with an analysis based on my EXPERIENCE (vs the theory
people that use this file).
... or send me mail at DYO780::SCHNEIDER with your name and DTN
and I will call to discuss it.

To Our Childrens Childrens Children is very metaphysical. It speaks

aspects of metaphysics
A Question of Balance is there also.
Actually I think they all are metaphysically orientated.

Well now that it is brought up, this poses an interesting
study. Certainly there is an overflow between those songs
which are mystically inspired and those inspired by any
number of hallucinogenics. Without trying to detract from
the genius of an artist can anyone really tell if a song was
the product of a two day meditative experience or a double dose
of LSD. The point I'm trying to bring up is what many authors
have postulated about, the similarity of effects of long diligance
in meditation and other metaphysical excercises which take years
to master, and hallucinogenic experiences which supposedly
get you to the same state but much quicker (and not always
while you are totally prepared for it - hence 'bad trip').
Any thoughts, comments or critisisms on the above, maybe
for another note.
My next reply contains the lyric which have always haunted
me. Mostly from Bob Dylan.

I just want to recommend an artist, that have given me very
much............. Van Morrison ("the celtic soulbrother no1")
is the artist. Many of his records, spanning from "astral weeks" (1968)
to "a sense of wonder" (1985) are containing music of great beauty
and spirituality. Some of the records I've played hundred of times, but
never seem to get bored with them. The lyrics are often reflecting
metaphysical depths, and this together with the music and his
extraordinary voice, makes a very special atmosphere.
I can often sense something very deep and real, when listening to
his music,it's almost a glimpse of a deeper world.........
If somebody out there never heard his music,I would highly recommend
this LP's of Van Morrison;
"Inarticulate Speech of the Heart"
"Into the Music"
"Beautiful Vision"
"Veedon Fleece"
"Astral Weeks"
and of course all of the rest of his albums.I would also be very
glad if somebody had some opinions and views about
his music.

75.11 | More On Stevie... | ODIXIE::RANDERSON | | Wed Jun 11 1986 18:49 | 15 |
| Speaking of Stevie...and being an admirer of her music...I have
always enjoyed the twist of 'mystery' in her lyrics. Some new
News I came across a few weeks ago, and wasn't sure where I saw
it or on the accuracy, mentioned that she had been married and/
or had been intimately involved with a serious-minded (not "born-again"
in the Farwellian sense) Christian for a year or more.
Interesting because, especially in her last two albums, her writing
seems to reflect somewhat on dealing with the conflicts inherent
in that type of relationship, the misunderstandings of the "two
worlds" and tension between her lover being so close (almost in
a fatalistic sense)and yet so far apart...but both being so intent
in searches for truth. Lends a tension to the music which really
gets felt in a clean way. Of course all this may be just my
imagination...

Larry, I can't speak for Stevie Nicks, but I do know something about
witchcraft, and something about rock and roll, and I think the way she
dresses in performance and publicity appearances has more to do with being a
rock&roll star. I don't know how she dresses when she's being a witch.

religious intensity.
From "The Gates of Delirium"
The fist will run, grasp metal to gun
The spirit sings in crashing tones, we gain the battle drum
Our cries will shrill, the air will moan and crash into the
dawn
The pen won't stay the demon' wings
The hour approaches pounding out the devil' sermon
From "And You And I" [my personal favorite]
Sad preacher nailed upon the colored door of time
Insane teacher be there reminded of the rhyme
There'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify
Political ends as sad remains will die
Reach out as forward tastes begin to enter you
From "Ritual"
Open doors we find our way, we look, we see, we smile
Surely day breaks cross our path, and stay maybe a while
Let them run, let them chase, let them halve between
Dreams are said to blossom courage, constant to the soul
Change we must as surely time does, changes call the chord
Held inside we enter daybreak asking for, asking for, the source
From Asia's "Wildest Dreams"
They recommended euthanasia for non-conformers everywhere
Some men's dreams, for others, turn to nightmares
This never would have happened in their wildest dreams
From Rick Wakeman's "Music Reincarnate"
Astral planes, the unknown sense lives on past human life
No man can sense the whole, the missing sense his soul
Governed by an unknown factor, fiction in our life
No man can sense the whole, the missing sense his soul
Take us to your leader, o the man who rules the mind
Reincarnate knowledge, as the soul records the mind
All life's secrets now unfold, the mind begins to watch
As helpless watching living man destroys and doesn't know
I could go on for hours.....

Tell me why you are crying my son
I know you're frightened like everyone
Is it the thunder in the distance you fear?
Will it help if I stay very near?
I am here.
And if you take my hand, my son
all will be well when the day is done
Day is done, when the day is done.
You ask why I am sighing, my son
You shall inherit what mankind has done
In a world filled with sorrow and woe
If you ask me why this is so, I really don't know.
And if you take my hand, my son
all will be well when the day is done
Day is done, when the day is done.
Tell me why you are smiling, my son
Is there a secret you can tell everyone
Do you know more than men that are wise
Can you see what we all must disguise
Through your loving eyes?
And if you take my hand my son
all will be well when the day is done
Day is done, when the day is done.

I enjoy the Moody Blues also or at least that album(In Search of
the Lost Chord).
Rush has some great lyrics many of which I didn't think related
to this subject matter until lately. It seems I haven't understood
enough of this metaphysical stuff to interpret the lyrics.
Steve Kallis might want to listen to their song Freewill:
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose Freewill
That is on their Permanent Waves album.
The entire side two of that album includes many allusions also.
I also wanted to mention something here that didn't seem
appropriate in the note on the Necronimicon.
Blue Oyster Cult Mentions the King in Yellow and the Queen in Red
in their song _E.T.I._
They have many strange lyrics - scary in fact.
One more thing. As a musician I have never been able to discern
any difference between metaphysical and drug oriented music though
where anyone(I'm not trying to insult anyone here)got the idea that
drugs help you musically is wrong - you might think it for a while
but you're fooling yourself if you think it's real.

that you cannot tell the difference between metaphysical and drug-
induced music and anyone who things drugs helps a musician is wrong.
I'm not sure how this reflects on metaphysical music...
I tend to disagree with you a little bit. Some musicians seem to
have reached a point where their music seems to border on the
metaphysical (Rush, Grateful Dead) and there is some evidence that
they have used psychedelics at some time in their past and that
a different view of reality resulted from that use. Also, studies
done in the sixties on artists using LSD found that even today some
"creative center" that had been opened by that one documented use
continued to influence their work positively.

| I would like to take the initiative to set the record straight about
Stevie Nicks. Stevie does write very mystical, magical songs; one
of the reasons I love her music so much. She also is a collector
of many crystals. She never claimed to be a "Welsh Witch" she only
introduces her song Rhiannon as being about one.
I personally heard Stevie Nicks say she does not consider herself
or like to be considered a witch. She just enjoys writing about
these special things which I enjoy listening to and I really get
into them. I even collect doves - but I am no witch.
It's not like I don't believe in the stuff because when it comes
to ESP I sure do have it. But Stevie Nicks is not a witch she's
just someone with a great imagination and interpretation of things.

I agree that Rush does seem to show some evidence of *early* drug
use, but I think that their greatest music came later when they
promote a much healthier and much less self-oriented philosophy.
I believe drugs open a person too much in ways that aren't understood
by the user and that this harms the person spiritually and obviously
physically.

75.39 | Sara, birds, and a dancer | SOFBAS::BROWN | | Thu Aug 11 1988 14:03 | 32 |
| Well hello John M! Your questions about Stevie are interesting,
and I will do my best to answer them. I don't know much about
who "Sara" is, but Stevie did say once in an interview that
the song, "Sara" was part of a group of songs including, "Rhiannon"
that represented her love for women in the craft (I think you know
what I'm referring to.) Even though she claims not to be a witch,
and I know she isn't...she still loves the idea!
Ms. Nicks loves birds, she said once, because they are one of
the only free living things on the Earth...and she identifies
with the idea of flying away, not dealing with problems or
anything else...maybe that's why she got herself so messed up
in drugs.
Stephanie fancies herself a dancer because in High School (not
until her Junior year, I believe) - she was a cheerleader, then
went on to take ballet. She still dances ballet at least once
a week (or that's the last I heard before she wound up at
the Betty Ford clinic...) and it is a way for her to relax, and
try to keep off the extra pounds that creep up on her as she
spends a lot of time alone at night writing, and eating junk!
Hope I answered your questions, I'm sure that there's a lot
more to them, I can only offer you information that I've read
and heard from very reliable sources (radio station trade
papers, stage hands, etc.)
But I still want to know what Beautiful Child is all about..
if anybody out there knows, please help.
Thanks!

"Aja" (from the album of the same name)?
Also, I was glad to see someone finally bring up Blue Oyster Cult

I am sure this will be a "boo hiss" type of comment, but how about
the Beatles? Granted, they did experiment with LSD during their
Psychedelia period, but they also explored the Far Eastern religions
and I'm sure some of their music greatly reflects that period of
exploration.
Any comments, questions, or snide remarks?

I know she's not a witch because I know some pagans, and
based on Stevie's lifestyle, attitude, and things that
she has said in interviews, she does not practice witch-
craft. She may be endowed with certain powers, ESP,
etc. but she does not worship.
I guess nobody will ever know FOR SURE, but rumor has it
that she's been writing a book for about the last 5 years

she says it won't be released until after her death.
When that day comes, we may ALL find out things about

to her in a few years, but I've always loved her music.
There is one interesting album cover of her in an old
wooden room, the walls lined with shelves of jars. She
is behind an old wooden table lovingly grinding herbs.
This is strictly from memory. The details may be off, but
you get the idea. I don't know much about the dating of
clothing, but I'd guess the dress she's wearing pre-dates
the witch-hunting times.
If anyone's interested, I can post a list of some of her
songs. I'll pull the albums and look through the words to
her songs for clues.
Sorry I'm not more informed about Sandy, it's just that I've
been meaning to mention her here for a while, so I did while it
was on my mind.

| Nope, I thinkshe is referring to Sandy DENNY.
Sandy Denny was the lead singer for the folk/pop/idiosyncratic band
Fairport Convention. Prior to that, she was briefly in the band
The Strawbs. She left Fairport initially in 1970 or so to form
a new band called Fotheringay with her husband Trevor Lucas.
She was also in the "oldies" band The Bunch.
Eventually she came back to Fairport for 2 more albums, did some
more solo work and tragically, died of a brain hemmorhage from falling
down stairs in her home.
Her voice was breathy and very emotional and her songs have a certain
engaging quality that is truly haunting. Based on some of her songs,
I'd say that she had some supernatural beliefs.
Partial discography (from memory, I don't own all of these...yet!)
With Fairport Convention:
HEYDAY
WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAYS
UNHALFBRICKING
LIEGE AND LIEF
A MOVEABLE FEAST
RISING FOR THE MOON
With Fotheringay:
FOTHERINGAY
With The Bunch:
ROCK ON
Solo:
RENDEZ-VOUS
WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES
LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ
(this is not a complete list...sorry...)
A song about Sandy:
DID SHE JUMP OR WAS SHE PUSHED: Richard and Linda
Thompson/Shoot Out the Lights
And a whole slew of others, the titles of which escape me.
A unique performer. At best, she was stunning. At worst, slightly
sentimental and schmaltzy. One of the few voices equally comfortable
with gentle folk ballads and with gutsy rock and roll.
Interesting Sandy Denny fact: She wrote one of Judy Collins' biggest
hits, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?".
Check COOKIE::FOLK_MUSIC for possible further information.

breathy voice, is into the occult and does photography

| Major Whoops! Anyone have an idea as to why this has been a
major aaarrrrrggghhhhh couple of weeks for me? Naaahh, don't
want to digress in this note.
I meant to type SANDY DENNEY! If I still spelled her name wrong,
will let ya'll know next week. I'll check out her albums this
weekend.
Her style was sort of old tyme british folk. Some were ballads.
A pretty, lilting style; and a very quiet voice, tho that could
have been the quality of the recordings. Probably pretty
similar stuff would be Fairport Convention and maybe some of
John Renbourn's stuff.
Have a nice weekend everyone!

| I just thought I'd add some lyrics that I think are neat. They're
from "Inside a Dream" by Jane Wiedlen's (formerly of the Go-Go's)
"Fur" album.
I lose myself inside a dream
opening up a secret door.
I lose myself inside my dream
and find a world worth living for...
living for.

concert was excellant. She did most of her new music which I found
very different. I also feel that she was more polish than her earlier
concerts.

RE -.1 ;-;-;-;-;
The show is in Denver at McNichols arena. I'm hoping it will be real
good. I saw her a few years back twice in one summer at Red Rocks, I
think one of the shows is out on video, and these shows in that
environment was so spectacular that I'm don't want to be let down. Is
she still real heavy looking? I really like her change in music styles
but still appreciate the old material.

I don't think you will be let down with her show. She didn't dance as
she usually does and I found out later that she had broken her ankle???
So you may get a better show with her moving around more. The stage
design was really good. She does look like she still has some weight
on. But I think she stills looks good. What I like about her is that
she pays so much attention to her audience. When she said White Dove
she walk completely around the edge of the stage taking gifts and
shaking hands and talking with people. I think that is a wonderful
quality of hers.
Have fun at the show.

...small nit re: .22
the song "Jacob's Ladder" (one of my personal fav's) was
written by Bruce Hornsby ( of Bruce Hornsby and the Range). Tho'
Huey Lewis and the News did the first recording of it, I much
prefer Bruce's own rendition of it, which is on the newest release
of his "Songs from the Southside". Hearing Bruce's rendition, you
just know that it how it was originally meant to be sung, unlike
the very "pop" version that Huey did.
BTW, Bruce's music and lyrics seem very soulful...maybe somehow
relating this to the topic....

| If you want my opinion - - and I am sure you won't - - I really
think SN is a self-important twit. Sorry to be so blunt. The
real creative force behind F Mac was Lindsey Buckingham. But
this is just an opinion.
In a recent interview with Jon Anderson (this year) of YES, he
said that in the early days their lyrics were the results of
what he called "psychedelics" - - or LSD to us other people.
But his recent works, without the use of drugs, are just, if not
more, spiritual. If you want to hear some real spiritual stuff,
and what I call really modern sounding music...
I would suggest "Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe" which came
out this year and Jon Anderson's "In the City of Angels" (1988).
Truly good music...(to me).

| A,B,W,&H is a far cry from the early Yes days, and even from recent Yes
work.
IMO, when you use drugs, you have two different people inside of you.
The person on drugs and the person off drugs. If the finest works from
Yes were made when they were on drugs, then the newer stuff is going to
come from a completely different person and place. It isn't the same.
That also explains recent work from Clapton, Floyd, etc...

re: .60 (Jp)
I have to agree with you that ABWH is a great album. The lyrics
are the absolute best part of the album (imo). I'm already sick
of the music - but it lasted (for me) as long as any of their
other stuff. Truly inspired lyrics.
There's a line from Big Generator (I think) that goes along with
what you said: "there was a reason we experienced psychedelics
so we could see..." or something like that. Not true really.

| This may seem quite a bit after the fact, but Stevie isn't British. In
Fact (although I forget the actual state of her birth) she is
American.... her Grandfather was a Country singer. I heard her in an
interview in 1983 talking about the songs he taught her and how he was
a big influence on her singing (she does have the country touch in many
of her tunes).
