| With regards to the last point first, the priest is right.
With regards to the rest of it:
Therte are two forms of faith healing -- spiritual and psychollogical.
It's sometimes hard to separate them (see my early note of placebos).
Taking the psychological cases first:
Sometimes, a person is "ill" for reasons other than physical. As an
example, a person has committed an act that he or she feels is wrong, and yet
goes "unpunished." Something triggers an ailment, say a rap on the head that
actually would cause no permanent damage, and the person suddenly says he or
she is blind. The actual blindness is psychosomatic, but the person is just
as blind as if there were actual damage to the optic nerve.
Under such a circumstance, the blind person can be "healed" if he or
she is _convinced_ that the person doing the healing _can_ heal, then sight
will be "restored."
Other ailments that this mechanism has been identified with are
dumbness (inability to speak) and lameness.
Spiritual healing is just that -- a miracle by conventional standards.
It is a gift that apparently a number of people have demonstrated, historically.
In addition to Our Savior, the magus Apollonius of Tyana demonstrated the
ability more than once. However, in most cases, the spiritually healed must
be willing to be healed for the treatment to hold.
A problem here is that there are a lot of charlatans in this area who
take advantage of the gullible or desparate.

| I'm not sure what this base note was about, but this topic seemed
the most appropriate of the "healing" topics for what I'm seeking.
I have a dear friend, 23 (?) years old, who has cancer. This
was discovered four years ago, at which time treatment began
immediately. My friend was a highly physical athlete and won
swimming scholarships to several different colleges, but spent
his freshman year in a hospital, experienced a lot of pain, and
lost all his hair from chemotherapy. He also ended up having a
bone marrow transplant and further painful treatment for a year
at a specialized hospital in Texas. A few months later, the
cancer disappeared. Totally, without a trace.
Three months ago my friend went back for a check-up, and cancer
was detected again. Needless to say, he was devastated. He's
now studying to be a pilot in Arizona and is not letting this
interfere with what *he* wants to do any longer. He says he
can't go through what he went through before and is trying to
heal himself through dietary and herbal self-healing means.
Can anybody recommend any books I can send him??? Thanks in
advance...

| Hi Carla,
I recently ran across two books. (available at "Celebration",
since you're in Colorado Springs :^) )
"What The Medical Establishment Won't Tell You That Could SAVE YOUR
LIFE", by Micheal L Culbert. Explores many alternative cancer
therapies, mostly based on vitamins and diet, and metabolic theories.
The Author is a reporter with an axe to grind, but the book has
a good biography that might lead to many other resources.
"You Can Fight For Your Life" by Lawrence LeShan
subtitle: Emotional factors in the treatment of cancer.
I haven't started it yet, but it looks like it will be very good,
other books by LeShan always have had something important to say...
There's a whole shelf of stuff on alternative medicine
at Celebration, probably others there I didn't notice yet...

Carla, also available are the following:
"Breaking Through Illness: Igniting the Healing Power Within"
by C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D and Caroline M. Myss, M.A.
This is a complete self healing program for anyone experiencing
illness, stress or a major health or life crisis. It is unique because
it guides you into relaxed states of consciousness and into activating
your own natural healing powers. Using powerful affirmations, positive
mental imagery, and soothing guided meditations, the "Breaking Through
Illness" program redirects your thoughts in a way that empowers
the entire healing process. It consists of an instructional guidebook
and 3 cassette tapes.
"I Choose Life"
by Patricia A. Noriss, Ph.D and Garrett Porter
This book is an in-depth look at the body's ability to create health
through the power of the mind.
In highlighting her work, Dr. Norris presents 9 yr. old Garrett
Porter as an extraordinary example of the effectiveniss of imagery
and biofeedback in the healing process. Garrett was diagnosed with
an inoperable brain tumor. In his own words he describes how he
worked for a year with biofeedback equipment, special visualizations
and relaxation techniques to totally eliminate his tumor.
(both of the above are available through Stillpoint Publishing)
(in N.H. - you can call toll free and order them at 1-800-847-4014)
Another excellent book is "Love, Medicine and Miracles" by Bernie
S. Siegel, M.D., published by Harper and Row. The stories in this
book are drawn primarily from Dr. Siegel's patients who have cancer.
In 1978 , Siegel started ECaP (Exceptional Cancer Patients), a
specialized form of individual and group therapy to facilitate personal
change and healing. This experience led to his desire to make everyone
aware of his or her own healing potential, resulting in this book.

| Carla,
I checked with the bookshop when getting all the titles, and some
of them are available in the States. This gentleman has had incredible
success using diet and meditation.
Dr. Ainsley Mears, some of the titles are: Cancer Another Way, Wealth
Within, Why the Old, Thoughts, Prayer and Beyond, Let's be Human,
Kind of Believing, The Introvert, From the Quiet Place, Door of
Serenity and Dialogue and Meditation.
Also highly recommended are Heal Your Body, and You Can Heal Your Life
both by Louise Hay.
I have seen at close hand positive thought, and meditation work
on Cancer.
Hope this has helped,

| Carla-
Several years ago my boss' wife (age 30-a master mechanic, a
certified chef and a CPA [!]) developed a cerebral carcinoma (brain
tumor.) She underwent some chemo-therapy and radiation treatments as well.
As an attempt at "helping" I gave her both sets of Lazaris'
Health tapes (2 different lectures) during which he describes the
source of illness and methods for changing that reality. Also
included is a meditation on each tape (set) that may be useful.
I think the tapes are great. A few months ago I sent copies of
these tapes to DEJAVU noter Larry Christensen. Perhaps he could
share what he found in them (and then again, maybe not.)
They tie in very well with some of the concepts as I read them
in several of the preceding notes. Louise Hays (in Dale's note)
is a close friend of Lazaris...so, as you can see, many sources
pointing in similar directions.

| There is a series of books by a man named John McDougall which I
hear are helpful in improving health. I have not read them yet,
but I have heard positive things about them (perhaps some of you
have read them). The first is The McDougall Plan, about the basics
to his "health-supporting" diet and lifestyle. The second is called
McDougall Medicine - A Challenging Seconds Opinion. This is split
into how to apply his basic plan and ideas to various diseses.
He also has several cookbooks related to all this.
Also, I took a workshop (at HCHP, That's Harvard Community Health
Plan in the Boston area) called "Ways to Wellness" which helps one
overcome any kind of "un-well-ness" in the body, be it stress, cancer,
ulcers, alcoholism, panic attacks, allergies, back
pain..etc..etc..etc...If your friend wished to partcipiate in something
like this it may help them....

| Carla,
May I suggest you take a look at a book written by Michio Kushi.
He uses Macrobiotic cooking an food principles in the healing process
he promotes.
I believe the title of his book is the Cancer Prevention Diet.
Apparently he has had good results with this technique.

Carla,
Just wanted to tell you that I know of a lot of people that were
greatly helped by Louise Hay's "You Can Heal Your Life" book, some
of which were cured totally of a terminal disease. I definitely think
that this is one book to look into...
Remember what disease is.... dis - EASE.
