| Hi Ray
I bought an album a few years back called "ENVIRONMENTS" which
had one whole side dedicated to meditation. The song, I think, was
called "Bells". It was a random series of tones that a computer
created. Played at 33rpm it sounded like you were inside a room
sized iron bell giving a huge ring which would trail off for a few
seconds and then another. If you played this at 45rpm or even 78rpm
it sounded just like computer tones you'd hear at a video arcade or
a beep from your vt100. I found that it would slow down my thoughts
to the point of feeling like I was sleeping but I wasn't. I think
you could pick this up in any big record store.
If your interested I'll get all the order numbers off of it.

| A few years ago I came across some music by someone by the name of Kitaro.
The music is all or mostly synthesizer (sp?) and is very relaxing. Alot
of the music has a "natural" flow to it (ocean waves, wind, etc.). Every-
one I've played it for has found it quite pleasant. Although I haven't seen
any of his albums in stores recently, they should be in the import section.
If anyone is interested and can't find it, I'd be glad to tape it for them.

| Some of the best music I have ever heard for meditation is done by
Steve Halpern. He calls his music The anti frantic alternative.
His stuff is terrific. There are about 12 albums out.
Spectrum Suite for one takes you through the 7 chakras (sp.) and
will start you buzzing as soon as you start to listen to it
some others: Anceint Echos
Prelude
Eastern Peace
EvenTide
Just to mention a few. I really enjoyl these albums and highly recommend
them. If you can't find them where you live let me know and I will tell
you where you can order them. A word of warning Steve Halpern says you
should not listen to them while driving could cause problems.
Also try some Gregorian Chanting that stuff is great for meditating to.

Thanks,

| Paul Horn has an album, "Inside the Taj Mahal", where he plays flute inside
the dome of the Taj Mahal. I first heard this in a yoga class, it is
great for meditation.
As Steve Timpson already mentioned, Steve Halpern is great, also.
I have found a lot of good music at The Sphinx Bookstore in Harvard
Square; there is also a place called The Awareness Center in Southboro
that has a book/music store. The owner is a former monk, and has a
lot of Gregorian Chant music; he carries the full line of albums
recorded by the monks at Weston Priory.
The Environments series of albums has everything from the Ultimate
Aviary (birds), to tides, to a creaking wooden masted sailboat, to
dawn/dusk in the Okefenokee Swamp, to a human heartbeat, to the
universal OM. Plus plenty more. Worth checking out. I found most
of mine while ploughing through stacks at places like Lechmere and
Caldor's.
Good luck.

| Gregorian Chanting is what you will hear when you walk into a monistary
when the Monks are singing.
When I put on one of these tapes for meditation I am gone in nothing flat.
the chanting is very soothing and promotes my meditative states very well.

| The following tapes may be of interest to some people. Each tape is designed
for the stated purpose. The first 3, (Downstream, Modem, and Amber) are on
sale for $8.95 to non-members until Dec. 31, 1985. The others are $11.95 each
for non-members, $8.50 each for members plus postage and handling and are
available from:
Monroe Institute of Applied Sciences
Route 1, Box 175
Faber, Virginia 22938
The Monroe Institute is internationally known for its work in the
effects of sound wave forms on human behavior. In its early stages, the
Institute discovered that nonverbal audio patterns had dramatic effects
on stages of consciousness.
Certain sound patterns create a Frequency Following Response (FFR) in
the electrical activity of the brain. Those sound patterns can then
lead the brain into various states, such as deep relaxation or sleep.
A generic patent in this field was issued to Robert Monroe in 1975.
Drawing upon this discovery ant the work of others, Mr. Monroe has
employed a system of "binaural beats" feeding a separate signal into
each ear. By sending separate sound pulses to each ear with stereo
headphones, the two hemispheres of the brain act in unison to "hear"
a third signal the difference between the two sound pulses. This third
signal is not an actual sound, but an electrical signal that can only
be created by both brain hemispheres acting and working together,
simultaneously. The unique coherent brain state that results is
known as Hemispheric Synchronization, or "Hemi-Sync".
Metamusic Tapes
[Should not be listened to while driving and for best results headphones ]
[ should be used. ]
METAMUSIC DOWNSTREAM - Hemi-Sync patterns which are a part of Metamusic are
designed in Downstream to open up areas of your consciousness that contain
your possibilities and probabilities of future actions.
METAMUSIC MODEM - This is a special blend of Hemi-Sync and music designed
specifically to take advantage of the communication aspects of your
consciousness. Thus, you can lie back and relax enough to have Modem help you
establish rapport with your inner self and possibly with other reality
systems.
METAMUSIC AMBER - provides a musical/Hemi-Sync vehicle to explore the
emotional aspects of you Self -- Now, Then, and When.
----
METAMUSIC CONVERSE - purpose is to help you experience the opposites of your
normal perception. Therefore, the pattern may lead you into emotions, visions,
and experiences that you have never before encountered in your conscious
waking state.
METAMUSIC BACK ROOM - a different approach to the concept of music to think
and dream by. With the aid of Hemi-Sync, Back Room helps you understand and
feel - in slow motion - the moods and complex attitudes of the jazz musician,
whether it be the sophistication of Gerswhin and Ellington, the piano man at
Louis's, or the guy who simply has the blues.
METAMUSIC SUNSET - is a musical/Hemi-Sync form of induction of the state of
transition, from one energy pattern to another just as one finds at the close
of a day.
METAMUSIC NOSTALGIA - is a musical/Hemi-Sync guidance into memory, not only of
the life patterns you remember so easily, but quite possibly those of another
lifetime, another place.
METAMUSIC OUTREACH - is a musical form organized around the Hemi-Sync process
whereby one may - simply by listening quietly - expand one's awareness beyond
the limits of Time/Space/Illusion.
METAMUSIC PACIFICA - music and sounds bedded with Hemi-Sync that have a
definite "tropical" flavor. As you explore the lush rain forests of your inner
self, you may discover hidden memories of Polynesia and the Orient.

| While not billed as such, I find that Brian Eno's music is very
relaxing, and it probably would fill the bill. If you'd like, I could
tape some of my Eno albums for you to give you a taste of his music. A
lot of it is synthesized, but there are other parts that are traditional
instruments.

There are a lot of Gregorian Chants of Masses recorded. My favorite is
the Mass for Easter Morning by the monks of the Solsmes Abbey (sp?).

| well. I guess the term 'New Age' hasn't made it out there yet.
As a musician, a pianist, I can tell you that Stephen Halpern is
one crappy player. However he's hooked up with some very sharp
marketing people, and is heavily involved in subliminal message
tapes. Actually, now that I think of it, he's perfect for this
venue; if his stuff were any more interesting it would defeat
the purpose. flame off.
Hari Deuter is a German musician who records on KuckKuck Schallplatten.
Great. Also Andreas Vollenweider, electronic harpist. George
Winston on Windham Hill. Steve Reich does minimalist but intense
sequenced synthesizer pieces. Michael Stearns, synthesist out of
L.A. there's lots more very good musicians working in this idiom.
Just fries me to see halpern touted. Best.

He also puts on a great (!) concert.
