39.0. "Strangeness of "Five"" by PEN::KALLIS () Thu Nov 07 1985 12:40

A number of years ago, the late John W. Campbell, Jr., Editor of ANALOG,
wrote (approximately) the following:

What's Wrong With the Number Five?

1. Two soap bubbles will meet in a plane. Three will meet in a	line.
Four will meet at a point. Five won't meet.

2. Life tends to be five-based. Reptiles, birds, and mannals have	a
	    neck and four major limbs.

3. According to the Bode-Titius relationship, there should be a	fifth
planet between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Instead,	there's
	    scattered debris.

There are other "five" points of interest. Care to contribute any?

It's one of the sacred (strange) numbers of the Illuminati.

re .3:

The Illuminati are/were a secret sect that could be used as a model for
a D&D game developed by a paranoid [:-)]. Seriously, there have been several
groups who have been characterized as "Illuminati," either by others or by
self-proclamation. Legendary Illuminati were workers-behind-the-scenes; puppet
masters, as it were.

I was sort of shying away from "5" as used by organizations; the Pythagoreans,
for instance, felt 5 an important number, and Apollonius of Tyana (who was
a Pythagorean) was informed of the fifth "element" on his incursion into India;
this could be treated as another "5" aspect, if one was of a mind to do so.

Five is also an interesting number astrologically. The circle of
the zodiac can be divided by 5 to yeild a little-known aspect called
the Quintile. It is supposed to be indicative of a special, subtle
talent. The nature of the talent can be intuited by looking at
the planets involved. For instance a Quintile between Mercury and
Neptune indicates that you have some unique way of combining the
other-worldly consciousness of Neptune with your everyday, practical
mode of thought and communication. How that actually *manifests*
is VERY difficult to pin down. In one person it could mean psychic
talent, in another a talent for writing poetry, in another a talent
for working with the hands (Mercury is said to rule the hands),
a talent for nonverbal means of communication like the dance or
    music.

Five is considered a special, very "human" number, and the Qunitle
is special because it often seems to operate in a paranormal fashion.
What most astrologers of my aquaintance seem to believe is that
it only *seems* paranormal--it is actually the five senses operating
together as a cohesive unit (something they rarely do) that elevates
the person's abilities represented by the two planets out of the
    ordinary.

The Qunitile's manifestations are quite elusive, also. Some believe
that we only manifest them if we are tuned into the higher levels
of our Soul. A more mundane way to manifest them seems to happen
when you have been under such stress that you finally relinquish
your ordinary controls and allow a certain "drifting" to take place.
It is then that the genius seems to come to your rescue, not be
taking you out of your situation, but by showing you something
completely different. I know from some personal experience that
they are not readily amenable to the conscious application of the
will that ordinary endeavors yield to.

39.6' 5 = the Start-button'CURIE::COSTLEYMon Jun 22 1987 11:095
As a Gemini (5th month) with 5!planets in Gemini, 5 seems quite
tolerable. It appers to me to be a 'generator' number... that is,
    an energy-stimulator; a trigger; a start-button.

If you put five soap bubbles together in a circle and look in the
    middle, you'll see a five-sided object...like a pentacle...

then there's the Pentagon, so I certainly hope 5 is a number that
brings with it, goodness! (and not necessarily a "start-button"
in this case ;-) sorry, couldn't resist)

I refer you to dejavu note number 1189 that refers to the fifth
    in music.

I also wrote a reply there having to do with meaning behind five
that I got from a book on Ceremonial Magick (intense stuff!!).

A Pyramid, with all its mysticism is a five sided object.
