Scrying, or crystal-gazing, is one of the most made-fun-of areas of
psychic activity.  A crystal ball is but one of the instruments that can
be used for the purpose.

Ordinarilty, a crystal ball is _not_ used in a seance to Contact The Depart-
ed; rathwer, it's used as a viewing device for distant or (some claim) trans-
mundane scenes.

The operative theory of a crystal ball is that the operatror stares into its
depth, making his or her mind more receptive to impressions; these impressions
generally take the form of imahes the operator "sees" in the crystal's depths.
Clairvoyance ("far-seeing" rather than "seeing-into-the-future") is supposedly
heightened by focusing on a crystal ball.

Other apparatus that can be used include reflective surfaces such as polished
jetstone or "magic mirrors" (a recipe for one of these was written in a
Rennissance-period "occult philosophy" book.  Since the ingredients had to
be added on sp[ecific astrological positionings of the planets, the process of
developing the _alloy_ from which the mirror would be made would taqke about a
year -- perhaps more -- to complete), pools of ink, and even the polished finger-
nail of a virgin boy!  (In that case, the boy was also the reader.)

In a way, scrying's similar to autohypnosos.

		Your note reminds me of Nostradamus.  I believe he made his
predictions from what he saw in a brass bowl filled with water.  He may have
hit the side to make it ripple to enhance his view.

	The idea of looking into the depths of a crystal ball or what ever the
device, would increase ones sensitivity or distance one would be sensitive to
(clairvoyance).

	On my birthday years ago my friends brought me to a psychic who made
many predictions.  And looking back now I must say that so far she has been
right.  One thing that stands out in my memory is she predicted my 34th year
to be one of great change and accomplishment as well as my 43rd year.  Well
low and behold it is my 34th year now.  I haven't received any intuitive
guidance yet but I'll keep my psychic ears open for it.  In the meantime I'll
just keep playing Megabucks.
