3867.0. "Ada on OpenVMS futures..?" by COMEUP::SIMMONDS (loose canon) Fri Apr 25 1997 07:31

Asking mostly out of idle curiosity.. Are our OpenVMS Ada products
EOL? (several replies in here have stated that Ada 95 will never be
    adopted)

Thanks & apologies if this is a 'sensitive' topic with the Ada team..

3867.1the short answer is "yes"BEGIN::YODERIt's 999,943 to 1 but it just might workFri Apr 25 1997 08:4410
I am morally certain that DEC Ada will never be made into an Ada95
compiler. No sensitivity here, I knew the job was dangerous when I
    took it...

Digital's Ada95 solutions are Rational's Ada and GNAT, maintained by
    Ada Core Technologies.

Disclaimer: I'm not stating official policy, just repeating my
    understanding of it.

3867.2Not dead yet, but not going to Ada '95 eitherKMOOSE::CMCCUTCHEONCharlie McCutcheonFri Apr 25 1997 11:0715
Yes, DEC Ada will not go to the Ada '95 standard.

We are, however, planning future releases of DEC Ada.

We have provided Ada '95 solutions through other vendors for Digital UNIX
and OpenVMS Alpha. ACT's gnat compiler is currently in field test.

See notes marked with keyword ada_95, 3653, 3764 which include some official
Digital positions.

More information can be obtained from our product manger, Cathy TEAMLK::Axel
on these partnerships, and on DEC Ada futures.

end-of-life?

remember that Ada was designed for long-lived projects, many of the Ada'83
large programs ar only just coming on line...

    Re: .4
.4> end-of-life?

Yes, but I was asking about the expected active growth/support life of the
DIGITAL-Engineered Ada compilers on OpenVMS, and not about the Language..
or did I miss-understand your comment?..

    John.

My remark was intended to imply that Digital will have to support those
projects for a very long time. Exactly how that plays out remains to be seen.

3867.7clarification, maybeBEGIN::YODERIt's 999,943 to 1 but it just might workTue Apr 29 1997 10:145
    Re: .5

The "expected active growth/support life" is an ambivalent quantity.
I'd say you should expect little growth but active support, assuming
my usage of these words matches yours.

I have planned releases for DEC Ada in the foreseeable future. We're in
field test for V3.4 for OpenVMS VAX now, and about to start the V3.4 for
OpenVMS Alpha release.

We continue getting customer problem reports, and we continue to fix them.

If you need some sort of statement on DEC Ada futures, you'll need to
contact our product manager, Cathy TEAMLK::Axel.
