3863.0. "Oracle suport for DECAda on UNIX-Internal Use Only" by TEAMLK::AXEL () Wed Apr 16 1997 12:41

Attached below you will find a memo from Oracle in regards to their
strategy for Ada support on Digital UNIX. This memo is for internal use
only for Oracle and Digital. DO NOT SHARE IT OUTSIDE. Oracle will be
handling an announcement to their customers of the change in their
strategy. I'm comfortable that the strategy they are preannouncing here
will provide DEC Ada/Oracle users with an adequate solution for the next
20-24 months.

If you are aware of a potential customer issue feel free to contact Sandy
Vella at Oracle. I would appreciate it if you include me in the dialog.

regards,
-Cathy Axel

Oracle has been shipping DEC Ada as it preferred ADA compiler for Digital UNIX
for quite some time. We have been advised by many sources, including Digital,
that the preferred ADA compiler should now be Rational APEX Ada. We have a
proof points that solidify this view:

	- DEC ADA will never support the ADA 95 standard
	- Rational APEX ADA fully supports both the ADA 83 and ADA 95
	  standards
	- Digital points to Rational ADA for ADA 95 support.
	- The US government dictates that for all new embedded systems
projects which require ADA, an ADA 95 compiler must be used.
	- We have jointly compared Oracle/Digital supported customer
lists and have determined a minimal amount of customers would be
	  affected.
	- Assumption: If a customer coded to the ADA 83 standard, then the
transition from one ADA 83 compliant compiler (DEC Ada) to another
ADA 83 compliant compiler, should not be great, i.e. they must
recompile. (The worry here is, of course, how many customers took
advantage of proprietary functionality in the code?)
	- Other product lines within Oracle, support or plan to support
	  Rational APEX Ada

ORACLE 7.3.X on Digital UNIX will continue to support DEC ADA
------------------------------------------------------------
Based on the above information, we have decided to continue with DEC ADA
compiler support in the life of the Oracle7 7.3.X RDBMS platform.
We are currently supporting release 7.3.2.3. We will release a 7.3.3 version
in May. We are expecting a 7.3.4 release in Q4CY97. We may have a 7.3.5
release, but it is not clear at this point. The 7.3.X platform is charted for
official desupport December 1999. During this time, bugs will be repaired,
and errors will be corrected. After December 1999, the 7.3.X platform will go
into an extended maintenance phase. In this phase, support will be offered
for a period of three years. Basically, in this phase customer questions are
answered, workarounds are suggested, and migration assistance is offered.

Oracle8 8.0 for Digital UNIX will support Rational ADA
------------------------------------------------------
We will support the Rational APEX ADA compiler for the Oracle8 8.0 RDBMS
