HI,
I entered this similar note in the Patriots,Red Sox and Celtics
notefile and I thought I should enter it here. Did anyone get a chance
to watch the Corp. Games Championship on Christmas day on ESPN? This
event was from Florida and they had 20-30 teams from around the country
representing different companies like Mobil and Texaco to say the
least. Well anyway they had events like 60 yard,220 yard dash,all
different kinds of swimming events,2 man boggie board,basketball free
throws,baseball pitching for accuracy,obsticale course, tug of war
and a team event of Lip Synching. I am sure they had more events but
that's all I saw in between opening up presents. I called the number
to get more information on this event and to see if I can get this off
the ground here at DEC. When I recieve the info. I will let everyone
know.

I'd certainly be interested in representing DEC in swimming. I don't
think this is going to fly, though, Chuck. Most of those companies pay
for their better athletes to train. For instance NCNB (NC National
Bank) has a world class marathoner on their payroll. NCNB pays for him
to train, pays all his traveling expenses, etc. and in turn he wears an
NCNB shirt for all his races.
With the state of the economy and the state of Digital, I doubt they'd
put any money toward it anytime soon. But who says we need money? We
don't need no steenking training money. I'd be happy to do that kind
of thing on my own time...but who can afford the time off and the money
to go to Florida for the competition?
Keep trying and let me know if I can help.

| 435.2 | Definitely do it if you can! | COGITO::HILL | Thu Dec 27 1990 11:32 | 18 | |
In the Summer of '89 I played on the DEC I men's corporate soccer team.
We went undefeated, won our league, etc. It was the best all around
team I have ever played with! (right, Metz?)
About halfway through the season, we looked into participating in something
like this, known as the "Corporate Olympics" held in San Francisco that
fall. To make a short story long, it turned out that we were too late
getting the paperwork started, but with the right kind of support form
a higher-up, this *could* have been done. The Digital Running Club, for
example, went to Iowa for something similar that year.
With all the belt-tightening going on, I don't know if they would go
for it now, but it seems worth a shot. BTW, if we had gone, I think we
would have had to use our own vacation time and DEC would have only
paid part of the cost, maybe airfare only. Even still, I say do it if
you can!

| 435.3 | SOMETHING POSITIVE | PENUTS::CPERSON | Thu Dec 27 1990 11:47 | 18 | |
HI,
Well they have different locations across the country and I'm
recieving different mails from all over from people who seem very
interested. We also have a national ranked runner working for DEC
and he works one floor above me, he is training for the 92 Games.
I realize that they are belt tighting across the country but being
the type of guy I am I will sell the idea to someone that can maybe
think "hey this is great for moral at this point." One never
knows until they try and being around DEC for the last 4 years I
have seen things done beyond amazement. I really love this company
and I honestly feel that DEC could get something positive out of it.
I would like to represent this company in a sporting event and I'm sure
that there are many other employee's who feel the same way.
So if anyone one is interested just send me a mail and I will
keep you up to date, Male or Female..

| 435.4 | It's a twisted web for sure.... | DECWET::METZGER | It is happening again... | Thu Dec 27 1990 11:55 | 27 |
Actually I think the ruling from corporate went something like... Since we had a dec soccer league that is partially sudsidized by DEC we wouldn't get any money for something like the corporate games. But since the running club has no internal dec league they are eligible for some of these things. I'm sure JD can clear things up about whether or not the running club gets any money from DEC to defray costs when he gets back from Oz. I wouldn't be surprised if they foot the bill totally themselves for most of their corporate meets. I was on a corporate ski team last year also that was subsidized. I don't know if DEC picked up some of the bill or the SKI club puts aside some money for corporate race teams or if the corporate sponsors (BMW,etc..) picked up a lot of the tab for the racers. I'm sure they would apply the same rules for a corporate softball team since they have DEC softball leagues in the east coast area as well as volleyball. It seems you get different answers from every person you talk to. Personally I think it would be good publicity to send a few teams to some of these events. Metz | |||||
| 435.5 | NOW I remember...... | COGITO::HILL | Fri Dec 28 1990 08:05 | 8 | |
Yeah, now I remember that bit about DEC already subsidising the
intramural soccer league. There is a comparable womens' team, but
there is no womens intramural league, so they would be eligible for
funding, it would appear. Some women DO play in the intramural league,
making it officailly co-ed, but I would guess that less than half of the
16 teams in the summer league have women players at all.
