    No argument has been lost, as you well know, nor is the AL's business
    lag alleged.  It was quite real and well documented.

    Lookit me.  I lost the 32-point must argument with Hunt (who acutally
    was the beneficiary of Hendry's research), and I admitted it manfully
    and the whole episode was concluded with dignity for all.

we have a little bit of "fack-tual" blurbage here to
let us know what the deal is....

If it DH is truly gone, then I am pleased.  If not, then
what gives?

    It's not gone yet but Fay Vincent has made public statements that he
    would very much like to see it go.
    
    This is the first time the baseball commissioner has publicly
    acknowledged his desires on this issue so *that* is significant in
    itself, I guess.

    No, it is the *second* time he has voiced his feelings towards the
    subject.  During the series, it came out that Vincent was having
    a meeting with all AL team (presidents/owner/doctor/pick someone)
    to discuss the removal of the DH.
    
    It was also noticed, at that time, that many of the AL team (do
    it again) agreed that it might be a good idea.

    Vincent stated during the Series that he already had arranged the
    required majority of ALmost ownerships to vote for the restoration
    of baseball to that fallen league.  Since then he has called a 
    special meeting of owners wherein the removal of the Designated
    Geek is the subject.
    
    At this point the only significant obstacle foreseen is obtaining
    the necessary approval from the Players' Association.
    
    It's like a dream.  I just *knew* that all those Dan Schneider 
    notes that I printed out and sent to Fay would pay off, that even
    a little guy like poor MrT could turn the tide of history.  My 
    most efficacious envelope to Fay?  I think it would be the one with
    all the notes printed out from the Baseball file with Waugaman 
    cudgeling poor schneid with true facts sustainable theory and fine
    thinking.  It's my specualation that Fay at that point doffes his
    spectacles and said, "my GOD, we're frying the brain pans of even 
    our most educated youths!"

    Sending entries to Internal Use Only conferences to outside sources?!? 
    I realize that T is joking, but I hope that everyone realizes that this
    should not ever be done.  Showing notesfile materials to people outside
    of DEC is what sparked Ron Glovers recent memos restricting what should
    and shouldn't be said in the conferences.

    One can only hope that the use of artificial turf, a desecration
    of the game far worse than the DH, will also be on the way out.
    How about a rule that says any new stadium must have natural grass,
    and any stadium that replaces its old artificial turf must replace
    it with grass (sort of grandfather the older stadiums in).

    The Royals' decision two years back to not replace their Turf was
    a major blow.  The MLB's (and the NFL's, ftm) trouble in this is 
    that many of their stadia are used to hold such profitable events 
    as rock concerts, monster truck competitions, WWF cage matches, etc.
    and it's a $$$ decision.
    
    Congrat's to the U. of Michigan for its decision to pull the polymer
    up this winter.  And to Ohio State also for having done so already.
    Why colleges leave the Turf down at their stadia is beyond me.  As
    an IU grad I wince every time I see Memorial Stadium on TV (which
    ain't often).

    I've heard that MLB will be leaning toward giving a new franchise to a
    team with natural turf.
    
    Colleges and turf:  It may be because maintenance costs are lower and
    it opens up the facility for use by intramural sports.  At least that
    was the reasoning behind installing it at my alma mater.

What about High schools ?

Almost all the high schools out here have artificial turf fields. The reasoning
they use is the fact that since it rains so much out here in the fall that the
fields would get ripped up in a few weeks.

After popping the ligaments in my ankle playing soccer on turf this past week
(an injury that would not have happened on grass) I have to say that this
stuff is hurting the high schools big out here. Imagine a high school kid with
turf toe. It's a nagging injury that could effect them forever....

btw- Maintenance cost surveys have shown that for a professional franchise it
     is no more costly to maintain a grass field over a turf field. turf 
     become more cost effective when it is used for multipurpose events 
     like monster trucking and disco record burning...

    I believe that part of the comeback of natural grass, rather than
    artificial turf, is the result of Purdue's ag school research into how
    to get a natural field that wouldn't turn into a mud-hole in rain. 
    They succeeded in developing a drainage system, specialized top-soil
    and sub-soils, and a patented grass seed which accomplishes the feat. 
    What would happen if you ran monster truck demolitions on it is
    anyone's guess, but I expect to see more natural turf as the
    understanding of the process expands.

    Artificial turf is justified in domes (unless they figure out a way to
    grow grass inside) or in universities that have limited playing fields,
    such as Boston University and Boston College.  Otherwise, it isn't.

    P.S.   Richie Allen's quote was "If a *horse* can't it, I ain't playin'
           on it."    Richie had quite a fondness for the ponies.   He
           missed several Phillies games late in the 1976 season while he
           was at the track.  I believe he owns and races his own ponies
    	   now.
