| A question for you video game phreaks. Anyone have the SEGA Genesis
system? Any sports games? How do you like it?
In the last version of SPORTS, there was a sports games note which
included discussions on Nintendo sports games. Anyway, I'm asking
about the SEGA Genesis because I'm considering making a switch from
our present Nintendo system to the latest & greatest SEGA Genesis.
The problem is, my kids and wife (I hate video games) love Nintendo
and I'd hate for them to wish they had it back if I get rid of it.......
What I'm looking for is opinions from people who're familiar with both
systems and/or people who have the SEGA Genesis. I'm interested
in comments about `adventure' games as well as sports games, regardless
of how much it may overstep the boundaries of SPORTS...... :-)
Thanks,
Hawk

| I started this topic about six months ago. I had one of the greatest
notes of all time describing a video arcade hoops game called Arch
Rivals.
Then came that lovely "Network partner lost" message. I figured it was
a sign from the SPORTS gods.
Anyway, anyone ever play Arch Rivals? I'm not a video game freak at
all, but this one is truely classic.

| dan'l, a technoweenie once showed me how to recover a note lost when
the "network partner lost" happens. Simply, the nexted time you can
get into the notesfile, type WRITE/LAST if you're creating a brand new
note or, REPLY/LAST in the note you're replying to. Somehow, by a Notre
Dame miracle I believe, your lost text will reappear!
Anyway, Mike, I did a quick search through the NINTENDO notesfile and I
didn't see any sort of discussion on the SEGA Genesis system. I also
went through the SEGA (MEGA) notesfile, and there's lots of SEGA
Genesis discussion, but nothing comparing it to the Nintendo. I did,
however, write a new note in MEGA similar to my .1 in here.......
Actually, when we did have the video/board game discussion in the last
version of SPORTS, I got more out of the Nintendo talk than I did from
the Nintendo notesfile itself!
Hawk
P.S. Another reason I'm bringing this up now is that I've seen ads
for the SEGA Genesis that if you buy before 10/31, you get to pick
another game for free. The system's about $150 and the average
game goes for about $50.......

| Did you ever play a complete game of Arch Rivals, like $4.00 worth? It
gets real crazy at the end. The crowd starts throwing things on the

Once I even got bit by the mascot bulldog on the sidelines. This is an

First off, why ditch nintendo for SEGA. Why not just get SEGA, have
them both, compare them, and put a note in here with the results.
If you do wanna ditch nintendo, I got dibs on buying yer games.....

| Actually, since I'm no video phreak, I've never even seen this SEGA
Genesis, until last night, that is. I went to a Child World to check
it out and the really disappointing part was the small number of games
available. They had only about a dozen to choose from while the NES
games numbered well over 50. Then, there's the price. SEGA Genesis
games were well over $50 while NES games averaged $35. I do understand
that the SEGA is no comparison to the NES in graphics and sound detail,
but I'm not so sure I want to ditch the NES just yet........
Still gonna think about it, and wouldn't mind some more replies

| I would love to see a video or computer football game like this:
Offense and Defense, either against an opponent or the Computer.
Ability to call plays on defense for line.. linebackers.. safeties..
and corners (ie blitzes, drop into coverage, safety blitz, man,
zone, bump, etc.); also specify five backs or seven backs.
Ability to call plays on Offense for line (pass block, run block,
pulling guards, tackle eligible, etc.) receivers (routes and/or blocking
assignment), backs, and QB with different plays: run off tackle right,
left, sweep right left, pass (short, deep, fly, post, down and out,
designate receiver, etc.), end around, draw, quarterback draw, qB
sneak, flea flicker, etc.
This would give thousands of options. The computer would have to be
programmed for % of success/failure for every combination.
You could take x minutes programming in your defense, while your
opponent programmed his offense.... then push the button and watch it
happen.
I would be willing to pay a few hundred if it was a sophisticated and
realistic game, with realistic chances on success/failure depending on
your opponent's strategy.

My kids had a new one this week based on Olympic events, but I'll be
dipped if I can remember the name of it. Pole vault, karate, canoeing,
and archery are some that I remember. Some of 'em are a hoot.
Like, in the pole vault the guy appears to miss the pad completely on
the landing and lands flat on his back on the running track. When he
makes it, he jumps up pumping his arms.
Another one that gets me rolling is the judo or tai kwon-whatever,
where these two guys come out and bow politely in the traditional
fashion before beating up on each other. I much prefer boxers who come
out growling and scowling at each other, instead of two guys who
curtsey and say "Ah...please to kick out my sh*T." "Ah, yes..and
kindly to bash in my brains."

| Got me rolling too, Dickster. Is this a Nintendo game? If so, let me
know what it's called. It sounds interesting........
I've pretty much made up my mind concerning the upgrade/investment to a
SEGA Genesis vs. repairing and keeping our Nintendo, thanks to several
replies in the SEGA (MEGA) notesfile and a field trip to Child World.
The Nintendo stays. I've come to realize that, given the small number
of Nintendo games we own now and the amount of time we limit playing
time for the kids, with the addition of a few more games on their
Christmas list, there's still plenty of enjoyment left. No need to
upgrade now. The other major factor in my decision is the very limited
games available for the SEGA Genesis, as opposed to the NES, plus the
average cost of Genesis games, ~$60 vs. ~$35 for NES.......
Oh, any recommendations for Nintendo hoops games? My daughter keeps
mentioning "Jordan vs. Bird" but I just don't keep up with these
things...... Would it happen to be in black & white? :-)

Since you probably don't have any friends to trade games with, Hawk,
8^)), a good way to test-drive them is to rent them out of the video
store for a weekend. I still hate video games myself, but my kids
sometimes rent one that is on their "must have" list, and find that
after a few hours' play it really vaccuums on a grand scale. Kind of a
waste to have bought the game first and then find out it wasn't worth
it. Like spending a lot of money on a date and getting a handshake.

have no friends, my kids do and they play different Nintendo games at
their friends' houses. So, they wind up knowing exactly what they want

I'd still appreciate the name of that Olympic game.......

I'll see if I can find the name of the game, Hawkster. I don't think

But one does have to be a "Jesse Helms" of the world to force your own
morals on another. We all participate in activities that some consider
immoral. And that behavior is only immoral in some states, and if it
was ever enforced and brought to the US Supreme Court, would get thrown

Frank was not censured. He received the the next harshest penalty,
allowing him to retain his committee positions.
While perhaps Frank's offenses were enough for voters to turn him out,
the contention that were he not homosexual he would have been thrown
out of Congress is simply not true, in spite of such protests from the
likes of Newt Gingrich. Sex scandals of both persuasions have been
going on for years in Congress. Ol' Buzz Lukens only just was finally
forced to resign a couple of weeks ago for an absolute-last-straw sexual
harassment incident after a storied history of such offenses, including
relations with a minor. While Lukens had already lost his seat in his
state's primary, there was little uproar or reporting of this sad

I'm not sure I understand, daryll. Your two statements seem
contradictory. I prefer your latter statement.
But FYI, there are many states in this nation where "illegal" things
also include what you, me, and every other heterosexual perform with
the opposite sex all the time...unless you're celebate or unlucky.
How would you feel if the sex police caught you and arrested you for
enjoying an illegal position? Recently, two gay men were arrested in
Cincinnati (surprise) for holding hands in a parked car at night.

It is truly sad when people start accepting immoral acts and fully
support the actors just because they cast a couple votes in their

| Whoa! Some very interesting Sports Games being discussed here!
Maybe we can separate the note into:
Sports Games: Video
Sports Games: Moral
Sports Games: Immoral
Sports Games: Political
Sports Games: Kinky
Sports Games: Mind Altering
Sports Games: Using Your Favorite Animal
Sports Games: For Fun And Profit
Sports Games: With Gensu Knives
Sports Games: You Can Play Alone
Then we should probably establish a
Sports Games: Oversight Committee
We can break the Oversight Committee up into:
Office of the Inquisition
Office for Silly Walks
Office of Intolerance
Office for Jerking Knees
Office of the Moral High Ground
Office for Creative Book Burning
Office of Racial Tension
Office for Elitist Crap
ETC.
Could be fun!!

Forgive my jumping in on this conversation late but... I fail to see what
someone's sexual preferences have to do with their ability to, say, teach

Anyone remember the Atari football arcade game from back in the
last '70's? It was a table top 2 player stand up model. You'd get
2 minutes for a quarter and the offense would have 4 plays, down
and out, sweep, bomb, and keeper. The defense had to guess which
play the offense would call. You'd control one player on defense
and on offense you'd control the QB and the reciver after a
catch with a trac ball.
We used to go in and pump in a couple of bucks a piece and play
for 20 minutes.
Recently picked one up for the game room at home.
You can really work up a sweat...

| The problem with most video games is, after you figure out how to work
it, it's not fun anymore. I understand homosexual math teachers even
experience this problem.
Usually, there's a few `trade secrets' to pick up, and then you have
mastered it.
I'm still waiting for the ultimate football video game I discribed in an
earlier note... and you'd think God, in Her wisdom, would get busy and
help with this noble project.

I don't think it is. I believe it is OK for you to record an album for
your own use (such as playing it in the car or on a walkman), but you
can't tape someone else's album and play it at home. Thus one reason
for the push to restrict DAT machines.
But I digress, this is probably best discussed in COOKIE::CD.
P.S. Most conferences don't allow even the suggestion of copying
things for fear of getting DEC involved in copyright infringement
stuff. We might be better off staying on the safe side of that as
well.

There _IS_ such a thing as public domain software, and some of it is
QUITE good... CSCMAS does have tons of stuff, but an even easier way
(if you are sans modem, or don't dig the data compression stuff on
CSCMAS), is to visit your local software store... one in particular
that I just can't remember the name of (it has over 1000 completely
free software programs) is great... damn... one of 'em is right on Rt.
9 in Natick, and another on Rt. 1 in Westwood... I'm sure somebody
will know it, or I will think of it...
Anyway, this place - wait a minute - something Tech... Ah, Unitech,
that's it! Unitech has an awesome chess game that is 3D, and will play
two people, one on computer (and it is really good, too), or computer
v. computer - which I think is what you were referring to some notes
back... Unitech calls this game "EGACHESS", and its so good I went to
the trouble of uploading it on CSCMAS, so its there too...
As far as the golf game goes, I have a great one called "Mean 18" - but
that isn't shareware - oh, but the way, what you are supposed to do,
if you really like a game, is send money to the author - and, call me a
sap, but actually did for this chess game...
Good luck!
