| Mike ..... we designed, built and ran pinewood derby cars for
three years ..... had some success (final 16 in the Regionals and
finalist in the troop). My comments would be voluminous here in
notes, but call me and I'll share the secrets.

| Mike, there is a SCOUTING conference on the net somewhere. I haven't
participated in it in quite a while, so I don't remember the node name
(CACHE maybe?). But I do remember there were some Pinewood derby
discussions in there. You might want to check there for some more
info if nothing pans out in here.

| Seems like what is needed is a race for the scouts, and another
race for the Dads.
We did this one year, and it proved to be beneficial. The scouts
entered their own cars, nothing fancy, but cars built from the kit
with nothing added except additional weight to get them to the limit.
The Dads entered some pretty slick looking cars, streamlined, decaled,
fancy-paint, etc. We had fun, as the kids did.
What it really boiled down to was that the kids cars represented
what this was originally intended to be: Kids building their own
cars and then racing them against cars of other kids.
