311.0. "Opinions on Dwarf Sporting ???" by BIS2::VRANCKX () Fri Jul 27 1990 06:46

    Hi out there,

Lately I've been reading in a newspaper about the latest forbidden
    "Sports" in the States.
It concerns Dwarf bowling & throwing dicipline.
Dwarf bowling is done by one off these little fellows which is attached
on a scate_board. And then you can bowl with him!!!
The throwing dicipline shows how far one can throw with a Dwarf.

Lately these Sports have been deleted from the by the officials
in the state off New-York and Florida.
Bar-owners can lose their booze-licence by having these competitions
    in their places.

    Any opinions please,

    Jurgen

The 'dwarf throwing' and 'dwarf bowling' are just another example
in the long line of 'things' people do to entertain and earn money.
If the person being thrown doesn't mind it, and he is getting paid,
then I say keep the (&*%&^ government out of peoples personal business.
If the reason the law was passed is because OTHER people in the
bar complained, then let them go to another bar that doesn't do
    this kind of a thing.

Let people enjoy themselves. I'm willing to bet that the 'dwarves'
are doing something that they enjoy, get paid decent wages, and
aren't really concerned about their size. They wear helmets and
pads, so what is the problem.

Is a dwarf (short-person) any more or less of a 'mutant' than a
    7-foot basketball player???

Would the legislatures feel that 'dwarf basketball' was equally
    demeaning??

There are enough examples of people doing stupid things (either
for money or noteriety). Short people have just as much right as
anyone else to do (or chose not to do) stupid things.

Alas... we are not proud that this habit ("sport" it is NOT) began in

Wow, I'm suprised it's not write-locked yet.

Obviously, with all this activity on the subject it must be
getting airplay all over the world.

Personally, I thought the content of the reply from the fellow
who's an Officer in the Little People of America or whatever was
pretty good. I think he might have furthered his cause if he
hadn't been so blatantly upset, and had calmed himself and put
in a coherent, well-worded reply.

My feeling on the subject:

On one hand, it could be considered a sort of discrimination.

Suppose there were a bunch of bars around here, where predominantly
white patrons strapped black men in harnesses and tossed them,
or put helmets on their heads and slid them at bowling pins.

How long do you think that would last? I mean, the Rev Al Sharpton
would be having a march the next day, right? Everyone would be
	up in arms.

Or if a gay person was tossed instead of a black person.

On the other hand, if the tossee is not doing it under duress,
and feels he/she is being paid a fair wage for it, what's the
	big deal?

Sometimes in this world we make too much of some things.

For example, look at wrasslin. Where else could an obviously
obese, totally outta shape blob like Earthquake gain celebrity
status? Do we hear people yelling about the exploitation of
fat people? No, Earthquake is making a good wage, doing what
	he wants to do....

So, personally, I feel if the individual is making money, and feels
that he/she is doing it of their own free will, what's the big deal?
