| Is this Colby College in Waterville, Maine ???
I have an uncle who used to teach English at Colby College. Late
1960s, early 1970s, I think. We took a family vacation through Quebec
and came back down through Maine and saw him and his family.
Nice school. Nice campus.
I have no idea about "While Mules". I've got three kids so sterilty,
obviously, is not something I'm familiar with.

Scott, you mean the football team actually had a winning season??
It never happened while I was there!! (1979-1982)
Yes folks, we're talking quality sports action here!! The Colby College
White Mules from Hooterville, Nardland (translation: Waterville,Maine)
PJ
aka David Strage (ATO '82)
PS To be fair, though, we did have some stunning successes...
ECAC Soccer Champions 1979
Hoop teams were always ranked highly
Womens rugby won several tournaments (actually the women's rugby
team had some of the schools best looking women....so
you can imagine what the rest looked like!! I ought
to be more charitable in case any alums actually married
a White Mule.....sorry, sorry..a Colby girl!!)
Frolf World Champions
Perenial runners up at the Woodsmen Tournaments (which included
such riveting sports as Axe-Throwing, Wood-Chipping
and Maple-Syrup Making!!)

254.12 | Colby football is gone for a year... | MAMIE::WENTZELL | Go the distance | Tue Jun 05 1990 07:32 | 22 |
| Well, PJ, I'll tell ya, my four years (85-89) never really saw what you could
call a winning season. Freshman year we were 0-8, not even any close ones.
To use proper OURGANG::SPORTS terminology, we sipped through LOTS of straws.
The next year, with a new coach, we really improved, to the point where we
almost won a couple, but the refs robbed us ;^) and we were 0-8 again. Next
we went 2-6. That first win, Colby's first in 3 or 4 years, was quite an
emotional thrill. Senior year we improved to 4-4, AND we beat Bates and
Bowdoin for the CBB Champoinship. Last year they were supposed to be great
and take the conference, but they lost a few close ones in the beginning of
the season and finished 4-4 again, but not before beating Bates and Bowdoin
(blew 'em out) for another CBB Championship (the first repeat ever for the
White Mules). Next year they probobly won't even have a team because my frat,
LCA, was caught existing (frats are underground since they were all given the
boot in '84) and they kicked almost everyone out for a semester and the rest
aren't allowed to play sports for a year or something. Since there were only
like 10 guys on the team that weren't brothers, I guess the team is done for
next year. Also made it tough on the baseball team this spring since 6 or 7
out of 9 starters were LCA's. It will be interesting to see what they do
now...

initiating women (or 'near-women' (tm) to use the correct description
for female rugby players)!!!
What's your National's stance on the Fraternity issue and do you
know how the ECAC is reacting...They will lose revenue if Colby's
season is cancelled.
To be honest though, it doesn't surprise me.... Bill Cotter has
been trying to get rid of the football team ever since he arrived
on Mayflower Hill. From his point of view, it is nothing but a
financial drain - very expensive in terms of equipment, grounds,
travel expense, scholarships, etc which is not compensated by alumni
contributions. I'm sure he has done a study that measures the effect
on alumni giving if he cancels the football team entirely!!!

Careful now, my girlfriend was captain of the women's rugby team (you wouldn't
know it though, she's about 5'3" and about 105 lbs - it helps to be sick in
head!). I do know the one's you mean though (5'6", 230 lbs, and more hair on
their legs than I have on my head)
>What's your National's stance on the Fraternity issue and do you

To tell you the truth, I haven't follow it much since the story was in USA Today
and Bryant Gumball metioned it on the Today show (he went to Bates, ya know)
back in April. I do know that ever since the Nationals for I think LCA, DKE,
and one or two others lost to the college in court in about 1986 or so, they
pretty much backed away from Colby. Zeta Psi was the only one left with
national backing until last year they got caught doing something dumb and the
college said publically and privately recind your existence or take a walk. I
have no idea of any reation from the ECAC. I know that Coach Austin must be
having a sh!t fit over it though.

I don't think it is so much the football team, as LCA (and frats in general)
that he has been after. Did you know Colby was the first choice as the site
to film Animal House? Cotter nixed that real fast. I know that the college
gives NO scholarships for athletics due to NESCAC rules (hockey is different
because they are in Hockey East Div II or something). There is tuition money
for football players but that comes from an alumni fund where the money is
given specifically for football. In fact, my sophmore year, when we got a new
coach, Cotter seemed to be doing all he could to promote the team. But I also
think that losing the football team for a year is a worthwhile price to pay for
getting rid of LCA in his view.
I glad I graduated when I did, otherwise I'd be wondering what to do with my
fall off right about now...

you get any more news, I'd appreciate if you'd keep me posted.

You've gone and done it now. We have a semi-regular contributor to the
conference who is a female rugger. Having played in a college with
both a men's and women's team I realize you must be kidding.

Being an oldtimer, you may be right ;^) but the way I heard it was that it was
one of Cotter's first acts as president, which clued a few people into his
stance on frats.
>P.S. Did the ATO's go underground as well??
ATO did not exist (actively) when I got there in 1985. The ones that did were
LCA, DKE, Zeta Psi, DU, Phi Delta Something-or-other (known as "phi delt"),
and Tau Delta Something-or-other (I think they are Tau Delta Kappa but they
were known as "tau delt"). LCA and Zeta Psi were probobly the most active and
biggest until the incidents of the last 12-18 months. I don't know what the
status of the others were this past year.
I'll let you know what else I hear...

Had to have been Robert E. Lee Strider - 'cuz I definitely remember
forgetting one *hell* of a to-ga pahty in Phi Delt my freshman year...
A. House had just come out that summer, and we did some justice to it!
Too bad the cameras weren't rolling for the sequel! I remember
stumbling to Louie-Loo-I, in a soaking bed sheet, barefoot, in about an
inch of beer on the floor... In fact that was about my last memory
