| Clearly, Wade Boggs, when he is wearing underwear, is the greatest
hitter in baseball today. Don Mattingly could not carry the box
that Wade's jock came in, let alone the jock itself.
This year, Wade is being the true and righteous unselfish player, and
is helping the team to victories.
The Red Sox have Roger Clemens, who is not related to Clarence, (I agree
in principal that Bird was better, but I try not to compare cross styles.
Bird was arguably the best jazz sax player, and did more to advance
Bop than another other musician), and Roger sits at the right hand of
GOD(tm). (If anyone is interested, they moved Jesus to long relief).
The Red Sox have Rich Gedmon. Rich has overcome many, many, handicaps
to play ball. I mean, someone who can't see, can't run, and has
problems finding the correct orifice to wipe after a bowel movement,
really has to exude the maximum effort to play major league ball.
Finally, the Red Sox have Bill Buckner. Without a doubt the
best first basemen in the league, few people realize the contributions
to the advancement of the Croquet wicket that Bill had made.
In short, the Yankees are hapless, and sinking. The Red Sox are
GOD's(tm) team...

I've been a Red Sox fan for years. It's so deeply ingrained in me

Joe Morgan has got to be the biggest stiff I've ever seen. I told
you Gedman needed a road map to figure out which orifice to wipe
after moving his bowels. Well, Morgan needs a road map, a flashlight,
and two assistants.
They really blew it when they took Buckner back. The guy is the epitome
of the me, me, me, player. He just wants to pick up hits. The guy
is a bigger waste of skin that Romine.
The Red Sox have never been a running team, but it would be cool if
they were. It would add a dimension to their offense.
Morgan is a dweeb.

Buckner did have a very good spring -- based on that, I think he earned
one last chance with the Sox. However with the emergence of Carlos
Quintana as the everyday 1B, Buckner no longer serves a useful purpose
on the Sox. I look for the Sox to release Buckner once Billy Joe
Robidoux gets off the DL.

I've watched Ellis since he was in New Britain, and man, if the Sox just
had the kind of team who could run, a manager who knew how to run them,
a front office that would get good management...

But sometimes you just have to have a guy out front who is a take
charge kind of guy, who inspires you.
I mean, look at Zimmer. As Arnold would say he is "one ugly mother____er".
But somehow the guys rally round him.
The management is the result of the front office too, I think in this
case, and since 1918 the Red Sox front office has been notoriously inept.

| The Red Sox and Yankees rivalry is like what Leigh Montville said
about a Cowboys - Raiders game a few years ago:
"Two toothless tigers gumming each other to death on the Coliseum
floor."
I find it hard to get excited about the Sox - Yankees games anymore
because at least one team, if not both, has been totally mediocre
for the last few years. It's kind of ironic to see these games
always the first to sell out even when they don't mean anything.
I'd rather see the Sox play Oakland.
Regarding Don Zimmer, he always had the creative streak in Boston
but he paid too much attention to what the press said about him
and his strategies, so he managed defensively instead of offensively.
Also, I blame Bill Lee for what happened to Zim here. At the time
Lee and Zimmer were on the team together, many people absolutely
worshipped Bill Lee and he managed to turn the city against Zimmer.

What a rivalry :^( Yanks look dead - sat in the dugout and in the
bullpen with their arms folded all night. Only signs of life were when some
beachballs arrived in the dugout. Hard to believe this is the team I live
and die with... They need a kick in the butt big-time.
Baserunning and fielding blunders abounded on both sides - a hot
Brunansky was the difference - as was Morgan taking a gamble and pitching
his closer with the score tied - it paid off. When I compare this game

| For Yanks fans who say "Yeah, but we're only X games out", you have to
remember that there are six teams ahead of the Yankees. So, whenever
two AL East teams play each other, the Yanks can only gain ground on
one of them... thus they need several long winning streaks to get back
into the race.
I read today that the Yanks are in the middle of a 26 game stretch against
the East. They lost 2 of 3 to the O's and the first one to the Sox. If
NY comes off these 26 games with an under .500 mark, they're done. They'll
be at least a dozen games out on July 1.

Yes he's been a non-factor in this series, but in fairness he's been
robbed of a couple hits on excellent defensive plays by Quintana last
night and Boggs Monday night. They'll fall in for him sooner or later
(hopefully after the Yanks play the O's this weekend :-)).
BTW Quintana is impressing me more every time I see him, both

| You can tell the Yankees are dead meat when you see Don Mattingly joking
with Tom Brunansky on first base late in the game with the Yanks trailing.
I don't think Don cares any more. He's got his contract, the team bites
the big one, and the only way he'll ever see a World Series game is if he
buys a ticket.
You look at the Yankee roster and all you can do is shake your head.
Claudell Washington? Rick Cerone? Dave LaPoint? Deion Sanders?
The Yanks aren't just bad, they are old, too. The worst team in baseball.

Tell me this - would Don Mattingly of 1984,1985,1986 {in the
midst of a hitting slump versus the Red Sox and losing 4-1
late in the game} have been joking with a guy on first base?
Don's on the Titanic and is resigned to the fact that even
though they're sunk, at least there's plenty of ice for the
drinks.
Geez, the guy was on the "Regis & Kathy Lee" show two weeks
ago... showing off his wife and kids and talking about his
restaurant business in Indiana. Face it, he's got his money,
he knows that winning a title is beyond hope; Don's on
cruise control now... and I never thought that would happen.

That's how low the Yanks have sunk... Talking about "improving" on
the worst record in baseball when they have an aging team, no current
record for developing talent in their system, and a misguided owner.
For the Yanks to have a mediocre season {.500 ball} they must win
3 out of every 5 for the rest of the year.
Wait'll next year... it's going to get worse before it gets better.
How about that Mike Lupica last night on ESPN? He's a prime example
of what mid-America thinks a typical New Yorker is...

| Personally I don't see anything wrong with a grown man cracking
a smile late in a game. #1, Brunansky is not part of the fabled
Red Sox/Yankee lore of the past. #2, I believe Mattingly is mature
enough NOT to get down to the point where he's pressing because
of his recent hard luck at the plate.
This guy is one of the best talents in baseball. I will NOT go so
far as others and say he is the best (Obviously, that distinction
belongs to that wacky baserunner himself, Wade Boggs) but the guy
is in the upper echelon. So things look hopeless...what's wrong
with a smile. Maybe Brunansky was relating what Lou Gorman had for
lunch? That's worth a snicker, wouldn't you say?

| As much as I enjoyed the sweep of the Yankees in Fenway, there were
a few bright spots to calm the raw nerves of the Pinstripe faithful.
The play last night by Espinoza with 2 on and Heep up was one of
the headiest I've seen in a loooong time. Of course the lead runner
was Mike "Where amd I?" Greenwell but Espinoza throwing him out
at 3rd was a piece of art.
As was Barfield's catch og a sinking liner late in the game - although
Burks eventually scored on Tolleson's error.
Interesting that Boggs' shot was ruled an error and Brunansky's
hot hopper around/over Velarde was ruled a hit.
For a pitcher like Greg Harris to 1-hit the Yankees tells me something.
This Yankee team shows absolutely no discipline at the plate. They
are pressing badly - the entire team. There appears to be no leadership
at all. Of course a few wins could rejuvinate them quickly but they
really aren't a very good team right now.
To think that last Monday they would be facing Dopson, Keicker,
Boddicker and Harris one might expect at least a split. Hell, the
Red Sox pitching is really quite mediocre after Clemens and Boddicker.
Maybe George is serious this time. Maybe he has finally listened
to his baseball minds he pays and is willing to rebuild.
Unlike some people, I think a good Yankee team is good for baseball.
Just like I think a good Packer, Canadien and Celtic team are good
form their spots. These teams meant so much to the success all leagues
enjoy today and it's a damned shame to see a team as rich in tradition
as the Yankees sink to such a low level. As big a Yankee hater as
I am I still cringe when I remember the Horace Clarke days just
as I feel almost embrarrassed in beating the Randy Velarde Yankees
of today.

| Meantime, Beak and I have our usual, long-standing Giantsmania
beer bet.
If the Sox are higher in the standings on Aug 25, he opens my
pregame beers.
If the Yanks are higher in the standing on Aug 25, I open his
pregame beers.
That's the kind of bet I like.
As far as I'm concerned, considering I'm a long time Sox fan,
I'm not counting any chickens, uh, er, beers before they're opened.

244.151 | | LUNER::BRAKE | A Question of Balance | Thu Jun 28 1990 12:22 | 55 |
| Haven't we learned our lesson yet, fellow Red Sox fans? Haven't
we been soaring in June and July too many times to be crowing so
soon? And, to bait those Yankee fans out there is not the thing
to do at all. Hell, if the Sox swoon in the Fall then they will
take particular delight in dredging up all these GONG notes and
tossing them back in our faces. Better to chuckle at the woes of
the Brewers or Indians or Rangers than at the Yankees, I say.
The season ain't even half over yet, my friends. I have been on
this emotional roller coaster since 1953 and have only been rewarded
with 3 pennants and no world championships (plus 1 division title
worth squat). I would be willing to wager that the Red Sox have
been in 1st place in June and July more than any other team in the
50's, 60's, 70's and 80's.
Yet I am optimistic, as is the curse of any Red Sox fan. I see a
pitching staff that came out of spring training with 2 starters
and 3 relievers actually looking like one of the better staffs in
the AL. Actually, it's better than the much bally-hoed Atlanta Braves
staff that we were all so anxious to assimilate in March. Greg Harris
has stepped into the starting rotation nicely and Dana Kiecker shows
flashes of major league talent. Wes Gardner, though, is a REAL Red
Soxer. He astounds on one night and gets pounded the next. Dennis
Lamp? The guy is a dinosaur who keeps pitching well. Rob Murphy
gets clobbered and somebody named Jeff Gray fills in.
Offensively, Boggs is under .300 and Greenwell is under .270 with
only 20 RBI's. Heck, he's on a 40 RBI pace for the year! Yet Tom
Brunansky steps in nicely and Evans wakes up once a week for day
games. Ellis Burks' performance reminds me why Frank Cashen wanted
him so badly. Jody Reed has proven he is one of the top 2nd basemen
in the AL while Luis Rivera adds range (erratcially) at SS. Carlos
Quintanna is still learning 1B but is stinging the ball the way
we were told he would when Brady Anderson went to Baltimore.
But, the Red Sox are not a good fielding club, they lead the league
in DP's and men LOB. They lack power and, of course, speed, which
startles no one. The front office shows some life and some commitment
to winning in getting rid of Gedman while Joe Morgan showed some
smarts by benching the ever-whining Marty Barrett. Smith for Bruno
was a gutsy move given the Sox need for a starting pitcher. The
aquisition of Pena was a stroke of genius - even if he hits .230.
But then we have Clemens pissed off at airplane delays, Boddicker
wanting to go back to Baltimore and Brunansky catching Nick Esasky
disease and becoming a free agent after the season. Perhaps a world
championship would change all of this but, then again, it could
also swell egos and grease the door even more for some to leave.
Anyway, until the red white and blue buntings are hung over the
backstop in Fenway for an October classic I will continue to be
warty of Red Sox success and NOT stir up those Yankee fans.

| I still say the key to Boston's chances are the #3-5 spots in the
rotation. The single biggest reason the Sox are in first right now
is because the likes of Harris/Gardner/Kiecker are far exceeding
expectations. Will they continue to do so?

| When you look at the Yankee lineup, it ain't really that bad - other
than the pitching. Even though Donbo is only .50 away from the Mendoza
line, I'd take him on my team in a minute. Sax has learned to throw
the ball to first, now, and is always a threat at the bat and on
the bases. Espinosa isn't Alan Trammel but then who, today, is.
Velarde/Leyrich(?) are developing players at 3rd. Barfield is still
one of the best defensively and can crank a few out now and then.
Kelley is a gazelle in CF, a real threat to steal and has developed
into a decent hitter. Hall ain't no worse a fielder than Greenwell
and is streaky enough to carry a team for a week. Nokes may not
be the best defensive catcher around but can get hot from the left
side of the plate easily and Geren is still a young kid.
The point I'm making is that this team does not really sip, per
se. Until a month ago they had one of the top staff ERA's in the
AL. Leary has gotten no support. They do not hit in the clutch and
have made some stupid fielding blunders. But, their everyday lineup
is no worse than the Orioles and, perhaps on a par with the Indians
and Red Sox.
If George will leave Stump alone - heck, if he leaves the baseball
operations alone - this team has as much a shot as any of the sorry
pretenders in the AL East.
And, Slasher, I know, some low life Yankee fans WOULD be in here
spewing trash if the roles were reversed. But I know my level headed,
analytical friend, Dan, would be the first to caution his bretheren
the way I am doing now ^8).

Reed is a damn good player. He's hit well in the clutch, and he's

Pena...my God what can I say. This guy is one of the best acquisitions
I've seen in a long time! Great arm, good with the pitchers. Sheesh,

| Jeff,
Everytime I've brought up the fans voting and how it should not
be the basis of electing the team, I've been roundly shouted down.
I've given up. We fancy ourselves real fans in here, but the
majority of fans vote on name recognition.
I have Esasky on my rotis team. Yeah, he's having a *great* year.
The arguements are always the same. *So and so* plays for a team
in a media hotbed. He's way overrated (read: *so and so* plays
for a team a hate (in Boston, for instance, that would be any Yankee
or Met), or in reality *so andso* doesn't play for *my* team).
*So and so* is a crybaby/whiner/child molester/quiche eater/entrail
sniffer (again, read: so and so doesn't play for my team). *So
and so* plays for a great team, so his numbers are inflated (or
he plays in a hitter's park, a pitcher's park, etc - again, he doesn't
play for my team).
Fan voting is a joke, but then again so is sportscasters voting,
and even peer voting, since these guys usually vote for the status
quo.
I for one would rather have all *All-star (hype/popularity)* games

They serve no purpose, in my opinion, unless they figure out a way
to make a fair selection criteria.

feeling is that the players should pick the All-Stars for the game.
Imagine the scenario where you work, if you were asked to vote on
"all-stars".
There would most likely be a couple of folks who would get the nod
because by far and away they excel. These same folks would probably
get a fan ballot too, because they shine so boldly.
BUT, would anyone in the world outside of DEC know about that guy
or gal who comes in every day, and quietly goes about the business
of excelling? Oh, maybe their "stats" aren't HoF quality, but when
something needs doing, they're right there. Or when the dike springs
a leak it's their finger in the hole....
See, I feel that the players themselves would know that a Jody Reed
(only an example) is Mr Clutch, or that Andy Hawkins is a better
pitcher than his record indicates...

Alternatively, I think the second half of the season might be a good

I would agree with the trading of Barfield, though not necessarily
Righetti.
>Righetti should be worth at least a couple prospects from a contender... but
>then again, he hasn't shown anything for a long time.
Dave has provided saves in all but 2 of the opportunities he has had
this year, so I'm not sure what you mean. He also loves playing for the
Yankees, which in these times is reason enough to hang onto him. He's still
young enough to be a quality pitcher for 4-5 more years.
As far as your comments in the previous note go, I'll let the ones about
Mattingly slide, seeing as they are probably bait for Dan :^) As far as seeing
improvement goes, I think it means letting some of these kids play, and see
what they've got. Yes, they are going to make mistakes, commit errors, have
terribly bad games, etc. Hopefully, though, they will learn as each day passes,
and improve, and make less mistakes and more good plays. This is just the type
of year where every error leads to runs by the other team, every missed
opportunity they have comes back to haunt them, the pitching is good when the
hitting is bad, and vice versa. Part of that is luck, but just a small part. I
think the other part of it is not playing with confidence, and letting the other
team take the initiative. The Yankees game in the recent past was to jump on
the opposing pitcher of 3-5 runs in the first couple of innings and go from
there. Now, they seem to take their cue from the other team. Let the other
team score first, and try to play catchup. And I think you approach the
game differently when you are constanly playing catch-up ball.
Yes, I'm real dissapointed and frequently embarassed by the performance
of this years club. But mistakes being made now are being made by inexperienced
youths, earlier this year they were being made by jaded veterans. If a rock
bottom season is what is needed to shake things up a let Steinbrenner smell
the coffee, then I say good. After all it's been 78 years since the last time
they finished dead last. They were probably due :^)

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. That happens to be

There would be takers if Righetti was offered in a trade. I just think he's
still a useful pitcher for New York.

Let's see - I guess I would have to qualify improvement as 45-50 wins

Agreed. Righetti falls into the same category as Reardon and the Smiths.
But it begs the question - how useful is he if there aren't many games to
save? How useful will he be next year if the Yankees don't get a better
nucleus of younger players to build on?

Interesting questions. I still would hate to trade him, although
I have confidence that Mills will get the job done when it's his time.
>Would you trade him to the Braves for Glavine ?
I suppose so, but only if Hawkins or LaPoint were sent away at about
the same time. It would be interesting to see exactly what the Yankees
would get for Righetti at this point.
Heck, I think they should deal Mel Hall and give away Balboni, too. But,
that means you are building around Mattingly, Sax, and Kelly. Enough? Nokes may
surprise and actually fit in, he can certainly handle left-handed DH/PH role
along with some catching. The trouble spots are 3B, SS, and a cleanup hitter,
along with strengthening the starting rotation. The answer to 3B could lie
within the organization - Leyritz, Blowers - and the rest of the season is
the time to find out. Espinoza is no longterm SS, at least I don't think so -
but then I don't think Velarde is, either. I think they could trade for help
at that position, unless the 2B at AAA - Stankiewicz, can learn to play SS.
Also the long term 3B answer for the Yanks is Andy Fox, who is still in A ball,
I think. As far as a cleanup hitter goes, I think that hunting a RH hitting
cleanup man is not the answer. They have tried Baylor, Clark, Winfield, Barfield
etc. over the years, with some, but not much success. Playing at Yankee
Stadium, the Yanks need a LH cleanup hitter, who is feared at the Stadium. As
long as the hitter is a true Major League hitter - hits righties and lefties -
he should be fine. Alot of successful Yankee teams have had Left-hand batting
cleanup hitters - Gehrig, Jackson, and Mantle was a switch-hitter but more
dominant Left-handed, etc.

If the Sox had Righetti, I'd be almost positively assured the Sox

the A's win the West). that's my opinion.
The Sox are by no means the greatest thing since sliced (Yaz) bread,
and I won't do any gloating before it's time.
BTW: In a NY Poll, a vast majority of people polled said they'd
rather root for the Mets, and the overwhelming majority of Yankee
fans responding said they are fed up with Steinbrenner. (No surprise

the 3rd starter....

the AL East. I'm telling ya. I didn't think of the starter bit
until you mentioned the 3 blind mice the Sox have in 3-5 starting
position. Gotta admit that Clemens, Bods and rags is a pretty darn
good trio.

First of all, my "pitiful" comment was a general comment, no malice
intended. Nothing personal towards any one noter or anything. Now
that "idiot" comment was something else. But none of that matters
now, I would like to make amends with anyone I offended(quite a
few by the responses). And hey Dickster, no hard feelings o.k,
that was my bad. I know my delivery is and can be a little
abrasive, so I'm going to sit back for awhile and listen to you
guys, and when I have something of real substance to add, I will.

I can relate to what you are going through. Technically, I'm
still a rookie in this heah note (my 1st year anniversary is
in August I think......what're you guys getting me for a
present? ;^) ). I remember the first time I entered this
notes file. I found the Bronco note and could NOT believe my
eyes. Guys were calling Elway "Mr. Ed" and talking about what
a dawg his wife is. I was urinated! They were even talking
about my beloved Broncos being pee pee smoochers. Well, enough
was enough I thought. I was gonna get in here and straighten
these bozos out! Yeah, right........
Anyway, a fellow Donk-lover and ::SPORTS veteran helped me
understand that this is all in fun and to not take it seriously
