| Sixers starters are ...
Johnny Dawkins Point guard
Hersey Hawkins Shooting Guard
Charles Barkley Small Forward
Rick Mahorn Power Forward
Mike Gminski Center
Ron Anderson Sixth Man
Reserves ...
Derek Smith Point/Shooting Guard
Scott Brooks Point Guard
Kenny Payne Small Forward
Lanard Copeland Small Forward
Kurt Nimphius Center
And I'm missing somebody ...
Coach is Jimmy Lynam and the Sixers are the freshly crowned
Atlantic Division champions. No one picked them to do this.
They've jelled very nicely. Charles has had a monster year,
perhaps the league MVP. Hersey Hawkins has picked his game up
several notches and Rick Mahorn continues to trail the "winner"
tag with him wherever he goes.
I hated to see Mo Cheeks go but the 12 guys that are there now are
legitimate title contenders.

Bob, who is this Lynam guy anyways? I got so confused after
the Goukas ditching (how long was he there anyways?).
I think the biggest mistake the Sixers made was the season they
traded Moses, Erving left, they drafted Daughtery and traded him
to the Cavs for Roy "Country Boy" Hinson and was it Threatt? Along
with getting an injured Ruland who only played something like 6
games and then retired... They really had a solid team before all
that mess happened.

The Daugherty trade was stupid for the sixers but helped the
Cavs, so I can't complain.

| Looking at the team stats I'm totally confused. Hawkins and
Dawkins are the guards. Whose the shooting forward, power forward
and center?? Barkley's outrebounding and outshooting both Mahorn
and Gminski. From the looks of things I would guess:
Center - Gminski
Power Forward - Mahorn
Shooting Forward - Barkley
If this is the case, Barkley definitely has changed his game
since his early years in the pros where he used to be more of a
power forward.

Dawkins was gone before Malone came along. The year before Moses
arrived, the Sixers had Caldwell Jones as a starting center. He's
a great defensive player, but didn't have the offensive punch to
start on a championship team. Malone was acquired for Jones plus
what turned out to be the 3rd pick in the draft (McCray). The
pick originally belonged to the Cavs. The Rockets figured they'd
lose Malone anyways and this would give them an opportunity to
lock up Ralph Sampson if both they and Cleveland finished with the
worst two records. As it turns out... Indiana and Houston finished
with the worst records, but the Rockets won the toss and got
Sampson.

| Nope, you were right at first Paul. Mo left the Rockets after they
signed him to a contract. It was felt that the Rockets had gone
as far as they could with Moses, and that a trade may land them
in the cellar (in fact they went 14-68), but would help them get
some fresh new talent.
As it turned out, it worked that way. Elvin Hayes retired, Robert
Reid was on sabbitcal, and the Rockets got Sampson and McCray (the
idiots had a shot at Drexler, but blew it to take McCray ....)
Dawkins went to the Nets in a trade for cash and draft picks, right ?
Or did they get Albert King as well ?
In any case, Dawkins ahd his best year two years after the deal,
and played a big role in knocking Philly out of the playoffs in
84.

Albert King went later. I think the Nets simply bought Dawkins, no players,
no picks. Could be wrong about that, though. King, the Nets just gave up
on and let him go free. The guy had the most fragile confidence in the
world. If he missed his first shot of the game, he was done for the night.

| Moses Malone was signed as a free agent in 1982 and *then* the
Sixers traded Caldwell Jones since he no longer fit their plans.
The deals were separate but part of a single strategy.
Darryl Dawkins was traded to New Jersey following the 1982 season,
if I recall.
Mo Cheeks went with Wingate and Welp for Johnny Dawkins and Jay
Vincent. Vincent was later released. I think he hooked up with
the Lakers.
And, yes, Harold Katz and his staff do seem to have gotten their
heads screwed back on straight after that 1986 disaster in which
they let Malone, Catledge, and 2 No. 1 picks go for what amounted
to Roy Hinson and Cliff Robinson. Jeff Ruland played five games
in total and then retired, Hinson went to Jersey for Gminski, and
Robinson is out of hoops.

of the Big Five and the Atlantic 10. Lynam played under Jack Ramsay
at St Joe's and may have assisted him at some point in his career.
Lynam was head coach at St Joe's in the early eighties when the
Hawks went to a couple of NCAA tournaments (and played Northeastern
in one of those years if I'm not mistaken). I think he was an NBA
assistant for a while before taking over the Sixers when Matt Goukas

St Joe's has fallen on tough times since he's left there.

| You're both right. Moses was signed as a free agent but Houston matched the
offer and traded him to PHiladelphia for Caldwell Jones and a 1983 first round
draft choice which turned out to be Rodney McCray.
As for Darryl Dawkins, he just sort of faded away. He was with Philadelphia
from 1975 to 1982, after being drafted as a hardship case. He was then traded
to New Jersey along with James Bailey for Keith Lee and John Bagley. He was
with New Jersey through the 1986-1987 season, although he played only 6 games
in that last year. He then entered his don't-bother-unpacking phase. He was
traded on October 8, 1987 to Cleveland along with twin brother Mel Turpin for
Kent Benson, Dell Curry, and a future 2nd round pick. He was then traded by
Utah to Detroit for 1988 and 1990 second round draft choices and cash (about
$3, I think) on November 26, 1987. He sulked most of the season, went through
some personal tragedies, and was finally waived by Detroit on February 23,
1989. Since leaving New Jersey, he had played only 20 games. He resurfaced at
Orlando for a brief spell amid speculation that he'd like to play for his
home-town team but that never came to fruition.
His only legacy to basketball is his record in 1984 for most personal fouls,
when he was whistled 386 times resulting in 22 disqualifications. This
eclipsed his record of the previous year of 379 whistles for 23
disqualifications. In one 3 year span he accumulated more personal fouls than
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar accumulated over his entire 57 year career.

This can't be right. The Nets obtained Lee and Bagley from the Cavs in the
'88 off-season, but I forget how. I highly doubt it had anything to do with Darryl
Dawkins. But in whatever deal brought the Nets Dawkins (I still think he was

| Jimmy Lynam was an NBA coach before as well. He was one of the
many coaches of the San Diego/Los Angeles Clippers a few years
back.
His most famous moment was in the early rounds of the 1981 NCAA
tournament when the St. Joseph's Hawks knocked off the top number
1 seed in the entire tournament, the De Paul Blue Demons with
Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, and Skip Dillard.
The Hawks won 50-49 on a layup at the buzzer after Dillard missed
a free throw. Bryan Warrick rebounded and drove the length of the
court before he dished of to Lonnie McFarlan who hit John Smith
underneath the bucket for the win. Lynam went nuts on the
sidelines hugging everything that moved.
That was the same day that Arkansas Razorback U.S. Reed threw in a
halfcourt buzzer prayer to knock off heavyweight Louisville and
Kansas State's Rolando Blackman buried Oregon State with a buzzer
shot from the corner.
The network announcers back at the studio were out of breath.
The Hawks went on the Regional Finals where they lost big to

Can't argue with the NBA Register, Dan. He was "Traded by New Jersey with
James Bailey to Cleveland for Keith Lee and John Bagley, October 8, 1987", just
after the 1987 season. So those players started in the 1988-1989 season. Is
that what you'd consider the '88 off-season?

Subject: Sixers face dangerous Cavaliers
Date: 25 Apr 90 18:47:23 GMT
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -- The Philadelphia 76ers received some reward
for winning their first Atlantic Division title in seven years -- a
first-round playoff date with the dangerous Cleveland Cavaliers.
Cleveland won only 42 games this season as it earned the seventh
playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but the Cavaliers battled injury
problems for much of season.
When they had the lineup that helped them win 57 times last season,
save for traded guard Ron Harper, Cleveland won 17 of its final 23
games, including its last six in a row.
The Cavaliers split four games with Philadelphia this season and
earned the right to open against the 76ers in the playoffs by beating
the New York Knicks in their season-finale, dropping Indiana to the
eighth seed.
The 76ers could be excused for wishing they were playing the Pacers
since they swept four games against them this season. Forward Charles
Barkley, however, insists they are not.
``I'm glad we're playing Cleveland,'' he said. ``If you play
Indiana, you might get upset, taking things for granted. But now, you
know from the first game on that it's going to be a war.''
The best-of-five series begins at the Spectrum on Thursday night.
Game 2 is set for Sunday night in Philadelphia before the series moves
to Cleveland for the next two games.
``To win the championship or get to the next round, you're going to
have to beat good teams,'' Barkley said. ``If you play a weak team the
first round, maybe you won't be ready for the second round. We know
we've got a war in the first round. That's good. It's going to be a good
series.
``They've got a very good team. It could go either way. But you've
got to like our chances. If we play up to our capability, I feel we can
beat anybody.''
Cleveland has an imposing front court in center Brad Daugherty and
forwards Larry Nance and John ``Hot Rod'' Williams, and a talented lead
guard in Mark Price. Most importantly, however, the Cavaliers are
finally healthy after missing Daugherty for 41 games and Nance for 17
contests earlier in the season.
``The Cleveland team now is different than the Cleveland team we
played at the outset of the season when they had a lot of injuries,''
Philadelphia Coach Jim Lynam said. ``They are one of the better
three-point shooting teams and when John Williams comes in, they are one
of the better shot-blocking teams.''
One thing Philadelphia does have in its favor is the homecourt
advantage. The 76ers were 34-7 at the Spectrum this season, third-best
home record in the Eastern Conference.
``They're very good but we're very good too,'' Barkley said. ``We
have the home court so the advantage should be on our side. But we could
conceivably lose this one. Hey, we've just go to go out and do our best.
Whatever happens, happens.''
In the playoffs last year, Philadelphia was swept in the first
round by the New York Knicks as rookie guard Hersey Hawkins suffered
through a 3 for 24 shooting nightmare.
``Last year was last year,'' said Hawkins, whose game improved
dramatically this season. ``We'll play better than we did last year. I
had a slump last year. It will be difficult but we have a better shot
this year.''

Terrific game. Sixers were hurting a little, with Derek Smith and Bob
Thorton not playing. But Hersey and Charles came through. Both Mike
Gminski and Johnny Dawkins had off shooting nights, but both delivered
clutch baskets down the stretch. The block by Barkley on Ehlo's layup
with about 40 sec left had to be seen to be believed. Just incredible.
The worst part of the game was having to watch it on the Sportschannel
Ohio feed. Jim Chones does the color commentary and is just awful. With
about 30 seconds left and the Sixers up by 5, Chones was talking about
how the Cavs were in great shape and just in the right position. He
brings a whole new meaning to the work homer. He also was talking about
how the Sixers can't block shots, but he happened to choose a night
when Gminski blocked 7. Bad timing.

Well, they still can't see a moving pick. :*)
I thought it was pretty even for an NBA game. I though the elbowing
foul on Mahorn was BS and the T after it was worse. I thought the ref
that gave Mahorn the elbowing call knew he blew it and let Mahorn yell.
A ref who wasn't involved in the play walked across the court to give
Mahorn the T. Pure BS.
Price played a great game, but Wilkens rested Nance too long in the
third quarter.

Sean, yu've got it backwards. In 1981, the Rockets made an incredible
run all the way to the Finals on the strength of a unbelievable
playoff series from Moses Malone, and great performances from Calvin
Murphy, Robert Reid, and Bill Willoughby. Also important, and
underrated, was the job done by Coach Del Harris.
The next year, Elvin Hayes returned to Houston, and despite another
great year from Malone, and a 46-win season (the year before, they
were 40-42), they got bumped in the 1st or 2nd round by Seattle.
The Rockets management felt that the team had gone as far as possible
with the talent at hand. However, the chances of landing an impact
player were pretty low given the solid talent on the roster. Philly
on the otehr hand was looking for the missing piece, and his name
was Moses Malone, who was wearing out Kareem on a regular basis
in Houston.
The Sixers signed him to an offer sheet, the Rockets matched it,
then traded Moses to the Sixers for a 1st round pick and Caldwell
Jones.
The deal helped both clubs. The Sixers won the title the next year.
The Rockets lost Elvin Hayes (retirement), and Robert Reid (religious
sabbatical), and staggered home with a 14-68 record. Harris was
fired, Fitch hired (ugh.), and the Rockets' record entitled them
to flip with Indy for the top pick. They won and took Sampson. After
Indy took Steve Stipanovich, Houston selected McCray with Philly's
pick, and the Rockets had the foundation for a great ballclub.
re Backboards,
Chuck Conners (yes, "The Rifleman"), broke a backboard with a two
hand set shot in 1949 or so ... talk about bricks ... :-)
Gus Johnson was the first to shatter a board with a dunk during
game conditions. But Dawkins is the guy who inspired fear. The first
time he demolished one was against the Kings when they were in KC.
It's said that a fragment of the backboard was imbedded 1/2" deep
into the hardwood from the force of the dunk.
It's no wonder why spring-loaded rims were rushed into common use.

| No, Moses Malone came to the Sixers in the summer of 1982. Akeem
Olajuwon left Cougar High in 1984 and was the Rockets' first round
pick that summer.
The Rockets took Rodney McCray in 1983 with the pick that the
Sixers gave them in exchange for Moses.
I forget how it was that the 1983 pick that the Sixers gave the
Rockets got to be such a high pick. The Sixers used to stockpile
draft picks like crazy back then so it was probably one of those
tricky "Houston from Philadelphia from ????" picks.

No, the Rockets got Olaajuwon when they tanked about the last two weeks
of the season. That years Rocket team inspired the draft lottery. The
pick they got from the Sixers was used for McCray. Akeem was drafted
with the pick they ?earned? by not trying at the end of that season.

Strange thing near end of game. Ehlo was driving for a hoop to

the backboard. Automatic jump ball, sixers got ball, ending all
chance of a Cavs comeback. Remember, the Cavs are the best 3 point

| Sean, sorry I didn't clear it up .....
In 1983, the Rockets drafted Ralph with their own pick, and with
the Sixers pick (which they got from Jersey, I think, in some deal)
they took Rodney McCray. As it turned out, the Sixers had another
1st rounder, which they would have used to take Clyde Drexler. Portland
got him, and the Sixers settled for Leo Rautins.
The next year, the Rockets were better, but not much more. And a
late-season swoon saw them collaspe. It inspired a lot of "tanking"
talk. In the last game of the year, Elvin Hayes was shooting for
his 50,000 minute career, so Bill Fitch let him play 46 minutes,
and people went crazy ! Nevermind the fact that the Big E got a
triple double, the Rockets lost, and peole pointed to taht as a
"tanking" example.
Anyhow, the Rockets won another flip - this time with Portland (a
no lose scenario, since if the Blazers won, Houston would have selected
Jordan), and won. And like somebody said, the NBA instituted the
lottery to prevent the possiblity of tanking. ALthough it seems
to me that now, instead of 1 or 2 teams doing it, perhaps 7 or 8
might try ...

The ball didn't stick there by accident. Barkley blocked Ehlo's layup

The jump ball came to center court, the Sixers controlled, and the game

The game was alot closer than I thought it would be. The only
Sixers that did any scoring were Hawkins and Barkley. Anderson,
Dawkins, and Gminski all had poor shooting nights. Couple that with the
loss of Thorton (bad back) and Smith (knee), and it makes for a closer
game.
Also, the Sixers for some reason seemed to have trouble keeping up
their emotional edge last night. They seemed real flat for much of the
first half, and really didn't turn it on until late in the third
quarter. The effort from Philadelphia was more workmanlike than their
usual effort.

If the officials call a fair game, none of the Cav's big men will be

The Sixers and Bulls split the season series 2-2.
Brooks was really the key last night. He was all over Price and really
got Mark frustrated, to the point where Price took a swing at him. The
facinating thing about the game is how the Sixers managed to get the
fast break going while Cleveland was outrebounding them. I hope Ehlo

a 3 on 2. He's unbelievable.
Also, if he didn't travel on that one, behind the back dribble,
split two shot blocking defenders (Nance, Daugherty) to a left handed
scoop and score plus a foul, I'll be fully amazed. Only Jordan
works the baseline better than Barkley, IMO.

them. Maybe they could try some defense, if they meet again (doubtfu).

| I saw the game... The Cavs played better then they did in Philly, and
didn't need the help they got from the noncalls. If Ehlo is allowed to
knock people over to steal the ball on Thursday, the Sixers don't stand
a chance. But I can't believe that it will be. The Sixers need to be
able to take the ball in the paint, put up the shot, and go the the foul
line on the bump. Last night, they just let them play on. One promising
note is that Price will probably be suspended for a game for taking a
swing at a Sixer again (this time it was Bob Thorton). I guess you
can't foul little Markie. :*)
Ohh well, it still only counts as one loss, and no matter how much
hooting WHITEHAIR does, I'm pretty sure the Sixers still have a one
game lead *and* the home court advantage.

| After a hard foul by Thorton, Price got up and sung at Thorton. He
missed (as did the officials who missed the whole thing). He wasn't
ejected, but going by what Stern said going into the playoffs, Price
should be history.
As far as Barkley goes, when he pushes someone they call a foul. When
he elbows someone they call a T (which hasn't happened in this series).
And when he punches someone (like Laimbeer), he gets ejected and
suspended (but he hasn't done that in this series either). Last night
they took Barkley out of the game before he could get frustrated enough
with the noncalls to throw any punches. Price, however, was not aken
out before he threw a punch. Mark Price, his magic elbows and moving
picks, is not exactly a model citizen.

I would be amazed if they officials don't call a tight game early to
eliminate some of the BS that went on in game 2 and 3. If they don't
call it closer, look for a fight, because neither team seems to be in a
position to back down. If the Sixers respond like they have earlier in

The Sixers crushed the Cavs 113-97. The cavs were never really in the
game after the first quarter. At halftime the Cavs were down by 10 and
never put on a big run in the 2nd half. The Cavs looked whipped. Hersey
Hawkins had 39 points, while Charles had 18 points and 19 rebounds. The
sell out crowd had the Spectrum rocking and rolling, as Barkley told
his teamated before the game that we will not allow any layups. And
they didn't. The NBA had three veteran officials there and it showed.
There were 26 fouls called on both teams, with the Sixers shooting 38
free throws to the Cavs 39. The missed calls (with the exception of
moving picks) seemed to be pretty even.
For Richfield, Daugherty and Williams did the most damage (25 and 20
points, respectively). The guards were pretty much a non factor for the
Cavs.
Now it's on to Chicago. The general concensus from the media I've heard
around the city is that the Sixers match up better with Chicago that
with Richfield, but I'm not buying that. I think the home court
advantage is too big a thing in the NBA (todays Knicks game
notwithstanding) to be ignored. I think the Bulls will win in 7 games,
but I hoping for the Sixers in 6. I would really love to see the Auburn
Hills Rumble, Part II.
Oh well... I hope tomorrow's game is on TNT because I'll be away from
Philadelphia and won't be able to see the local telecast.

The reason Katz is talking about moving to Jersey is strictly $$$$. He
wants big time concessions from the city and state regarding taxes and
other business stuff.

Subject: NBA Playoff Capsules
Eastern Conference Semifinals
Philadelphia 76ers
Coach -- Jim Lynam.
Finish -- 53-29 overall; 2-2 vs. Chicago.
Previous round -- Defeated Cleveland in five games, winning all
three times at the Spectrum.
Starters -- sf-Charles Barkley (25.6 ppg, 14.0 rpg); pf-Rick Mahorn
(10.8 ppg, 9.2 rpg); c-Mike Gminski (9.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg); pg-Johnny
Dawkins (12.4 ppg, 10.2 apg); og-Hersey Hawkins (27.2 ppg, 2.6 apg).
Bench -- f-Ron Anderson (10.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg), g-Scott Brooks (2.2
ppg, 2.0 apg).
Key stat -- Philadelphia was 8-24 during the regular season when it
trailed at halftime but 2-2 in the playoffs, holding an advantage at
intermission only in Game 5 against Cleveland.
Outlook -- Hawkins has established himself as a force to be reckoned
with, Barkley remains a power on the inside and Gminski should have
fewer problems dealing with Bill Cartwright than he did with Brad
Daugherty. But loss of Derek Smith, who played in only one game of the
Cleveland series because of tendinitis in his left knee, robs
Philadelphia of a key weapon off the bench.
Chicago Bulls
Coach -- Phil Jackson.
Finish -- 55-27 overall, 2-2 vs. Philadelphia.
Previous round -- Defeated Milwaukee 3-1.
Starting lineup -- sf-Scottie Pippen (22.5 ppg, 9.3 rpg); pf-Horace
Grant (15.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg); c-Bill Cartwright (9.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg); pg-John
Paxson (8.0 ppg, 3.0 apg); og-Michael Jordan (36.8 ppg, 7.0 apg).
Bench -- pf Stacey King (5.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg).
Key stat -- The Bulls are 38-5 at Chicago Stadium this season,
including 2-0 in the playoffs.
Outlook -- Pippen averaged just below a triple-double in the first
round, providing some much-needed offensive firepower to help Jordan.
Despite going four games with some hard takedowns, the first round
wasn't much of a struggle for the Bulls. The team also has had three
days to rest up for the 76ers. The much-maligned bench, however, will
have to contribute for the team to have a chance. Both Philadelphia and
Chicago won twice at home this season and that trend should continue in
the playoffs.

| Thanks for that article, Mike.
I don't know how much I agree with the bench being THAT much
of a factor for either team. I see the key factor being the matchups
of the starting five and who is going to have the advantage offensively
and defensively.
I'm not sure of what position Barkley plays (is it power forward
or shooting forward???). I think their going to have to create
a special position for him. 8^) Anyways, I would guess that the matchups
will look something like:
Cartwright - Gminski
Pippen - Barkley
Grant - Mahorn
Jordan - Hawkins/Dawkins
Paxson - "
What's this about Chicago's "much-maligned bench" anyways? As far
as I know Hodges is back playing, and Chicago has King, Nealy and
Armstrong as reserves that will definitely see playing time.
For Chicago to win this thing, they are going to have to play a
good inside defensive game and crash the boards. Offensively,
Pippen and Grant/Cartwright are going to have to perform along
with Michael. Chicago is 38-2 at home minus Detroit. If they don't
choke they can win this thing in the long run.
Philadelphia would be best to not concentrate solely on stopping
Jordan. If they can deny Chicago an inside game and can rebound
well, they should be well off. Both teams like a faster paced tempo,
so 5+ point leads may not last long, or assure anything going down
the stretch.

What's Chicago's future with Pippen. I could see them just bagging the
idea of a traditional point guard. Pippen from the small forward spot
and Jordan could together handle running the offense. Micheal needs a
Paxson-type shooting guard in the offense much more than he needs a
penetrate/dish guy.
I wonder why Pippen has waited until the playoffs to really play big.
Is it a new offensive scheme for the Bulls?

Scottie Pippen had a PHENOMENAL year for the Bulls. In fact, I had him

practically the whole year long...
In fact, Newc, the guy who picked him in our league, was second, based
largely on the contributions of his "Pippen, Patrick, Porter" combo.
Scottie can play. (And, he is also to be remembered because the "good

| The ultimate downfall of the Sixers this year will be the inexperience
of their guards. If it doesn't kill them in this series, you can be
sure it will get them against Detroit. Last night it really showed.
Neither Hawkins nor Dawkins could hit anything from outside. After
a while, Dawkins had lost so much confidence that even when the Bulls
left him wide open from '15, he would turn it down and try to drive
to the hoop in traffic. No knock on either one of these guys; I
think they both have bright futures ahead of them, but right now they
just don't have the requisite playoff experience.

Actually, ML, I own Scottie in my rotis. league. Unlike James, who
uses his head to dissect the opponents and who is a more necessary part
of the offense against NBA playoff-level defense, but who is just
really doing the same things, Pippen has expanded his role in these
playoffs. Never before have I seen him with the ball in his hands as
much as a playmaker, and he's taking the ball to the hoop with
authority much moreso than at any other time over his career.

I got a question for you, do you write for Inside Sports?
they latest issue has all time rankings in all sports and they rated
Wilt #1 and Magic #2. Reason for Magic's rating was they called him
the ultimate winner with 5 championships in 10 years. Seems to me
Russell won 11 in 13 now that's the ultimate winner. Russell was rated
I think #7 as a good player on a fast break team.

| Speaking of rankings, Mike, I happened to catch a segment on Jerry West
sometime last week on ESPN, and even though Jerry's a member of the
all-time losers club, he's rated as the best front-guard (I think
that's what they called it) ever for the Lakers. I took this to mean
even ahead of Smiley(tm). And I agree. Smiley(tm) may have the rings,
but Jerry in his prime would take Smiley(tm) to school.
I'm surprised the man has held up as well as he did after all those
championship losses. I'd be on thorazine. Jerry did say that the
recent Laker championships made up for the losses he's experienced, but
you could tell that deep down, he still feels the pain. On a personal

There was a good article in Sports Illustrated just a few weeks ago about
this. Yes, Jerry West still feels the pain, and he'll always feel the pain. For
all the confidence he showed taking big games into his own hands many
a time, it really seems he lacks confidence and is the ultimate pessimist.
I sympathize with him also.
Mike, do you think if they called traveling on what James does, and the
way James uses this alleged forearm bash (boy, you never stop coming
up with them, do you?) that if they called the rules as they exist on McHale,
would he have a post-up moved. McHale leads the league every year
in changing pivot feet without being called, but you stoop down to critisize
Worthy for something he does about twice a year.

night. I'm not one to cry about the officials but they were bad.
The bad calls that lead to a Sixer's loss:
1. Offensive foul called on Charles.
2. Technical on Mahorn. For what!!!
3. No jump ball when Hawkins and Jordan both clearly had the ball.
4. Jordan's foot was three feet out of bounds when he made that save
underneath the Sixer's basket.
This all goes to support what everyones been saying all play-off long:
"The officials give the calls to the home team".

| Michael Jordan is the best player I've ever seen, but that game last
night wasn't decided by the Bulls defense. That offensive foul turned
the whole game around. It gave Charles his 4th foul (second offensive)
and made him go to the bench. When Charles went to the bench the Bulls
outscored the Sixers 23-7. Not because of the defense, but because
Charles wasn't on the floor. You seen what happened to the Bulls when
Jordan goes to the bench, there offense is stagnent.

The lead was 3 when Charles went to the bench. The Bulls had chopped
8 off of Philly's halftime lead. The Sixers couldn't get the ball
inside during the comeback and Charles was on the floor. Granted
it might not have happen as fast as it did if Charles had remained
on the floor but it was going to happen of that I have no doubt.
Why? Because of the defense and Michael being unstoppable at the
other end....

You asked why Mahorn got a T. I think it is due to their
*rough* play in their previous series. One of the league
higher ups was in attendance. The officials probably felt
compelled, due to his presence, to call a T on the first

| I don't complain or blame officials, but if I ever thought a game
might have a fix in, last night's would be it. The Bulls 'comeback'
was fueled by some very, very shakey officiating. Never mind the
offensive fouls that weren't, but what about Will Perdue moving
both pivot feet, pushing off, and not getting called for anything,
right after the Refs called offensive fouls on the Sixers. Not
to mention Micheals save, where he moved his feet while on the ground
- he was traveling. Unreal. The fack that all the calls came in
a short period of time really had me wondering.
Oh well, gotta hope the Sixers can get some home cooking officiating

| After the "offensive fouls" on Charles, he wouldn't go inside. It took
the Sixers out of the flow for their offense. Defensively, the Sixers
seemed to drift off after the exchange midway through the third period.
They seemed to have lost their concentration on the defensive end.
Jordan is an amazing player, but I've come to agree with Lenny Wilkens.
Jordan gets too much of the benifit of the doubt on calls. He has made
plays after stepping out of bounds twice in this series, he travels
with the ball constantly, and about 50% of the time on his moves to the
hoop, the first this he does is clear out with his free hand. With
jordn getting this advantage, I think it detracts from any comparison
to mere mortals who are bound by NBA rules.
One last thing - If they are going to call that bullshit offensive foul
stuff on Charles, they should take a look at what Cartwright does at
the offensive end. Except for one move last night, Cartwright lowers
his shoulder and bulls Gminski out of the way. Real tough to defend
against that.

Subject: Dr. J. happy to be Mr. Erving
Date: 9 May 90 17:57:25 GMT
UPI SportsFeature
------
NEW YORK (UPI) -- Three years after skywalking away from a
successful practice, Dr. J has no regrets.
Julius Erving will always be Dr. J to basketball fans, even though
he has tried to make the distinction between the two personas.
Erving has said in the past, ``I've never gone anywhere and
introduced myself as Dr. J.'' And yet, when asked for an autograph last
week at the NBA office in Manhattan, it was the Doctor and not Julius
Erving who obliged with a message of love and peace.
Erving was an All-Star for every one of the 15 years he played
professional basketball, either in the ABA or NBA. He's the only player
to win Most Valuable Player awards, team and dunking championships in
both leagues. He is the third-leading scorer in pro basketball history,
and Erving, perhaps more than any other player, was responsible for the
1976 ABA-NBA merger.
Despite his long and colorful career, Erving claims he has not
missed the game since his retirement three years ago.
``Not one day,'' he said. ``I haven't missed playing one day.''
Erving also claims he doesn't watch the pro game much these days.
However, he did admit to watching some of the Cleveland-Philadelphia
series in the opening round of the playoffs. The 76ers, he said, are
defintely contenders for the NBA title.
``I've been out of basketball three years now,'' said Erving, ``and
it's taken the team three years to get back to where it was. And now
it's close to there, which is good.''
Erving's pro career began with the ABA's Virginia Squires in 1970,
when he signed while still a junior at the University of Massachusetts.
In 1973, the Long Island native came home to play for the then New York
Nets. After three years with the Nets, Erving was traded to
Philadelphia, where he ended his career in 1987.
While he didn't invent the dunk, his moves paved the way for the
Michael Jordans of today. ``See the fantastic Dr. J,'' proclaimed
advertisements for the 1976 Nets. Later that year, when he was traded to
Philadelphia, Nets fans demanded refunds for their season tickets.
Although he helped create a resurgence of popularity in the NBA
with his incomparable body control and improvisational drives, Erving is
perturbed by the entertainment focus of today's game.
``One thing I guess might be a little disturbing to me,'' he said,
``is the fact that some aspects of the entertainment part of the game
are in the forefront of players' thinking. I'm tempted to say the
coaches' thinking as well, and sometimes it's counter-productive.
``You know, when I see a guy run nine rows into the stands, when
three rows will do, I gotta think he's trying to get on the highlight
film.''

| Yep.. It looks like the gas tank is empty. Barkley looks exhausted out
there and his foul shooting is proof of that. The Sixers are really
missing Derek Smith, who could give them quality minutes of the bench
and match up pretty nice on Jordan.
The Spectrum crowd was really going yesterday. Every time Jordan
walked, they got on the officials terribly. :*)
Jordan is really something. He's relly deceptively stong. On one
drive yesterday he cleared out Chrles not once but twice with his off
hand on the way to the hoop. I didn't think it would be that easy to
clear Barkley out, but Jordan really did a job on him. With plays like
that he'll be tough for the Pistons to stop.
The other problem with the Sixers this weekend is that they didn't get
physical enough with the Bulls. They allowed Nealy and Purdue to hammer
on them inside without hammering back. I'm pretty sure there were more
Sixers on the floor than Bulls. The way the Sixers play, they cannot
win when they allow that type of situation to occur.
Mahorn (knee) and Smith (knee) are both questionable for Wednesday,
while Gminski (back) and Hawkins (back) are both probable. But I'm
afraid the train will stop on Wednesday.

Yes, I played for Lynam, but not at St Joe's. He was head coach at
Fairfield Univ. (in Ct.) for a few years (1968- early '70's) and I was on the
1968/69 team. Lousy record. Couldn't get us to play Philly style ball.
Majority of team was from Mass./NY-NJ metro/Washington D.C. areas. Only
2 guys from Philly. Hard to teach new (patterned) style to guys who are used
to mostly 1 on 1, 2 on 2 freestyle type of play.

| Although a lot of people have written off Philadelphia to win
this series, I wouldn't be too surprised to see them pull off a
victory tonight. In every game outside of game 1 Philadelphia has
been able to take over and force the Bulls to play their type of
tempo. If it wasn't for poor free throw shooting and laxing off
in the 4th quarter, the series could be exactly reversed.
Chicago doesn't match up well with Philly for some reason...
Philly seems so much quicker and creates many more open court/fast
break opportunities. The only problem I can see is that Chicago's
deeper bench allows the players to be rested more, and by the end
of the game Chicago creeps back simply because Philly is exhausted.
Comments?

| The Sixers are definitely exhausted. The amount of effort that Charles
puts into every game is enormous. I think the foor freee throw shooting
is a direct result of the fatigue. Philadelphia misses Derek Smith in a
big way, and he won't be available tonight due to tendonitis is his
knees. Everyone else should be available. I don't hink they have enough
left to beat the Bulls, but I can Always hope.
One theory I have heard expressed is that the Sixers have over acheived
so much and have had to put forth so much effort to get where they are
this year that they cannot "turn it up" like alot of teams do this time
of year. Charles has nothing left to turn up.

| The Sixers definitely overachieved this year. I'm very happy with
their season. There is no shame in losing to the Chicago Jordans.
50+ wins, the Atlantic Division title, and the Conference
semi-finals is far and above what any of the "experts" had in
store for them way back during prediction time.
The trades for Mahorn and Johnny Dawkins paid off hugely. Hersey
Hawkins improved his game tremendously and Sir Charles had a
monster year.
Jimmy Lynam called the shots and Harold Katz thankfully kept his
hands off.
Well done, boys.

| I'll second that Bob. Now the next step is for the Sixers to add
more quickness to their defense. (wouldn't you have rather they
took a chance on Sherman Douglas over Kenny (WHo ?) Payne ?)
If they can get a quick big man to play D (al la John Salley), it
would be a bonus.
That was the difference in this series. Chicago applied tremendous
pressure to the backcourt, and Dawkins in particular, wasn't up to it
(he'd better learn to go right with more confidence). On the other
side of the coin, the Sixers didn't apply much pressure on the Bulls.
It didn't seem to me that they could if they wanted to.
Even so, this year was a great improvement. Last year opponents
shot over 50% from the floor against Philly. Thanks to Mahorn, that's
a thing of the past.

| I didn't expect much from the Sixers this year. So it was a pleasant
surprise. I expected more i the playoffs. Hats off to teh Bulls
and their fans. I'll root for the Pistons to throttle the Jordans.
