An interesting situation occured last evening in the basketball playoffs for the national title here in Israel between Macabi Tel-Aviv and Galil Haelyon. With about 5 minutes left in the game, Galil had a 67-63 lead. Macabi scored a 2 point basket (layup), but the scoreboard showed 67-66. Unfortunately, the coach of Galil did not realize this until several minutes later after Galil had scored a basket and then Macabi scored a bonafide 3 pointer. At that point the score SHOULD have been 69-68 in favor of Galil, but the scoreboard showed 69-69. The result was that the score was tied at 88-88, and Macabi won in overtime. All the commentators and sportswriters agreed that 1 point had been inadvertantly added to Macabi, but the official scorer would not change the score. My questions are: 1. Has anything similar ever occured in the NBA (or NCAA)? 2. What action should the official scorer have taken. Thanks, Cb.

Was there a tape of the game? If so, it should be reviewed by a committee, with the scorer and referees from the game present. There is no way that such a stupid, easily correctable mistake as that should go unchanged. The scorer was probably justified in saying he would not change the score without evidence that he had made an error. sean

Can't do anything about it now. Once the officials sign the score book (if they do) then the result is official and can't be changed, error or no error. John

I don't know of anything exactly like this happening in the NBA. However, back inb the 1950's the Knicks and ?? were playing in the NBA finals. At one point the Knoicks scored a basket, but the ref didn't see the ball go throught the basket. Despite all the arguing the 2 points did not count The Crazy Met |
