| I think when my true hatred for Brent emerged was while watching him
a few years back on New Year's Eve. He was at Times Square with his
unattractive family.
Right in the middle of the big party, he says something like "Speaking
of New Year's and resolutions, isn't it time the NFL made a resolution
to hire a black head coach in the NFL this year?" A noble sentiment,
but it was so out of place given the circumstances that it was
laughable.
What a loser! The real question is why anyone ever saw fit to pay him
$1.6 - 2.0 million a year (heard on the news).

| Brent was targeted by CBS to still be their Sports `Voice', and he was
going to be doing baseball, olympics, etc., ad nauseum. We'd have seen him
everywhere. But they also said that they were planning to get some of the
younger people more air time, like Greg Gumbel, Jim Nance, etc. They are also
interested in talking to Al Michaels, who is urinated at ABC, but a hire there
would depend on whether or not Al could get out of his contract.
I was bug-eyed when I heard Brent got 2+ million a year! Every time
I've watched him, it seems like he was screwing up. I don't know how many times
he'd say something, and I'd wonder if we were both watching the same game. Or
he'd make a comment that was a total non sequitur (or totally ridiculous), and
the people in the room would look at each other as if to say `WHAT?!!??!?' And
most of his `in-depth' interviews were about as interesting as watching snow
melt.

| The unfortunate thing I find in sportscasting these days is all the
ex-athletes in the booth...and about 75% of them are terrible. This
nation's colleges produce thousands of qualified brains every year who
could step into a booth and do play-by-play. The ex-athlete is OK at
color (sometimes), but most times they're only in the booth because of
who they are (or were), not how good they can talk.
For instance, Eric Dickerson is now threatening to leave the field and
become a broadcaster. I'm sure someone will pick up this unproven
announcer too should this be the road he chooses. Meanwhile, these
great voices out of college can't even get their foot in the door
because they haven't made their name on the field. Burns me up.
Then again, if Brent is an example of what I'm rooting for, maybe it's
safe just the way it is. :-)

The problem I have with the announcing business is that they hire 1 guy to be
the Voice of everything and rely on the color men to know what they are talking
about.
It always seemed to me that BwEEEnt had just learned the game he was announcing
the day before the event. For example the NCAA tourney. it sounds to me like
Bweent never watched an NCAA hoop game all year. The he tries to study up
on all the players before the event and attempts to broadcast it. Therefore
it sounds like he doesn't know what he is talking about because he's basically
calling the game off of notes. You can tell in his voice and what he says that
he hasn't seen a hoop game all year.
IMHO it's unfair to the fans to put this sort of situation together.Instead have a
bunch of lower payed announcers with each having a specialty. That way you
get competance in the booth. Maybe 2 specialties a year. 1/2 year for both
so you can keep them busy. LIke Pat summeral doing golf and football....
Then you get good play-off between color and play-by-play men... and competance
instead of Bweent moose***ker in the booth....

| I agree with the last two.
There are some color men out there who are really good. John Madden
comes to mind, and Gerry Cheevers on SC is the other. Cheevers has
improved vastly over the last three or four seasons, and now his experiences
as a player and coach are passed on in such a manner that it improves
the game tremendously for the fan.
One of the most hilarious set ups I heard the other day was Dan Dierdork
doing boxing. Now, I think than Dan probably knows as much about
boxing as I do about speaking Swahili....
Bweent, pardon my expression, sucked.
I hope now that they get some good people in their. I, for one, would
like to see Irv Cross host the NFL Today show. He's always impressed me
with his knowledge of the game, and he's certainly got more personality
that Bweent.

The first time I saw that guy, I thought he just stepped off the set of

Count me in on those that won't shed any tears over the Mousy-one
getting canned. When he wasn't irritating, he was saying something
incredibly stupid.
Why in the world would CBS want to get that pain-in-the-ass Al Michaels
to take his place? Michaels comes across like HE is the show and not
the game. Do Michaels and Dierdorf have a running bet as to who can get
the most words in on any given braodcast? I say put Michaels on
baseball, only. There he can spout all of the assinine "stats" he can
come up with to try to make a boring game interesting.
I hope they bring in some new blood. Most of today's announcers fall
somewhere between barely tolerable and turn the sound off. The last
Olympics sure were nice. They had to bring back some of the old guys to
announce the college football games to fill in. I had forgotten what
good announcers were like.

I must be from Mars, but I LIKED Brent. I thought he was the
best at setting up a situation with his "You are looking live at.."
openings. I felt he was the best set-up announcer in the business.
I also like the thing he started a few years back by going silent
during the final seconds of the game to let the listeners get a
chance to hear the end of the game from a fans perspective. I also
thought he did a credible job with the NFL today show as an anchor.
Am I sorry to see him go? Not really, cause he will get picked
up by someone. 15 years at being the voice of CBS sports is not
a bad run, even if he was hated so much..which makes me wonder if
indeed he was hated as much as some would like us to believe.

activities - it is a big source of enjoyment for me. Brent,
although he is not the WORST I've ever seen (but pretty close),
is practically omnipresent on CBS. He has managed to take at
least a small bit of my enjoyment out of EVERY telecast he has

I'll second that Bob, Buck is my favorite baseball announcer. I
particularly enjoyed the work he and Bill White did for CBS radio on
the World Series, before White became NL president.

over Brent's other duties.

202.57 | Brent Doing Cable Shopping Network on SNL... | CAM::WAY | Will you yield, and this avoid? | Tue Apr 17 1990 10:54 | 22 |
| Did anyone see the SNL skit that opened the show this week?
It was hysterical.
They had "Brent Musberger" and "Jimmy the Greek" doing Cable Shopping
Network (CSN). Brent slipped a couple of times and called it CBS.
After some rousing discussions of upcoming items, "Mavis" from
Shreveport LA called in, told Brent he'd been jobbed by CBS, and
after much cajoling from Brent, bought the figurine they were shilling.
Brent gave her a big cajun honk on this old auto horn...
Then Jimmy the Greek decides to describe the next items, which were
big flashy gold pinky rings. Jimmy says "These should be a big
hit with our Black shoppers as they are known to like anything flashy,
pointed, or trimmed with fur". While he's saying this Brent is
going "Jimmy, wait Jimmy, Jimmy...." All of a sudden this Please Stand
By sign comes on.
When it disappears, Jimmy is gone.
If you can catch it in reruns, look for it... I thought it was really
funny....

| I thought the parts of it I saw were pretty funny.
They did a Tyson-Givens Love Connection ("I was ecstatic, Chuck,
ecstatic"), the Homeboy Shopping Network, and a skit about
Redd Foxx of Sanford 'n Son... It was pretty funny....

Just caught this in the paper. "The Drinks were on Brent"...
Musburger was buying champagne saturday nite for all the Steelers fans who
were in San Fran for the game at Jack's at Zack's.
What was he celebrating? The fact the World Series only went 4 games and CBS
lost a bundle....
