196.1 | T-shirts Sprouting like 'shrooms | FTMUDG::DUGGAN | | Wed Mar 28 1990 08:18 | 17 |
| Was in Denver Monday nite, and was surprised at the speed that the
shirthawkers got out t-shirts and sweats with the names of the teams on
them. Along the 16th Street Mall (jokingly renamed The Strip by one of
the local papers) all the souvenier shops had dozens of designs of
shirts, most emblazoned with the team's names (and, in one case, their
school's logos {not the team's logos}).
McNichols Arena looks like they tie-dyed it... colors everywhere.
McNichols is getting a new floor especially for this event (Doesn't do
to have the Nuggets logo prominently displayed for TV, after all)
(but I hear that the new floor has dead spots)
More as things develop.

The NCAA doesn't allow any advertising for any of the tournament
games. Last year I was at the West Regionals at Big Mac and they
had all the Nugget and NBA logos covered up.
You probably already know this, but on Friday from noon 'til 4pm
there are practices open to the public at McNichols. Each team
has a 1-hour practice, and there is no admission charge.

196.4 | Altitude Attitude | FTMUDG::DUGGAN | | Wed Mar 28 1990 10:13 | 21 |
| Some facts about the "Altitude flap":
All four coaches are whining about Denver's altitude. Jerry Tarkanian
is moaning the loudest, which is truly funny, since he plays at least
one game every year at altitude (Las Cruces, N.M. is 4700').
The 1983 Final Four was held in Albuquerque, (5200') and all four teams
either were not affected or were affected equally, since I don't
recall any players turning blue over the air (now Guy Lewis and Co.
DID turn blue there, but it was due to a slamdunk).
Salt Lake City, site of the (?)1986 FF, has an altitude of 4000', and
the the quality of those games was high as well...
It's a straw man. But you betcha you'll hear tons of drivel about it
from everyone concerned...

Best thing about the Final 4 is that there's only 5 days for the press

be a non-factor, but for whatever reason is the kinda thing the press

| The way it (used to, any) work is that the four colleges in the FF get
a certain number of tix. Ostensibly for the kids, but (these days,
anyway) mostly for the boosters.
Besides this, the conferences get tix, the Fuller Brush man (i.e. large
corporate sponsors), the mailorder folks who were lucky enough to get
them in the lottery held last year, the Mayor, and the Governor.
Plus the guy who has a luxury box at McNichols with 14 seats who
refused to allow the NCAA to extort his tickets (he will take his
brother and twelve orphans) The story on this one is that he bought a
luxury box years ago, and thus gets to use it at "any public function"
held at McNichols. The NCAA tried to usurp these tix by claiming that
the FF "is not a public function" (HAH!) but he took the NCAA to court
and won (apparently the judge laughed the NCAA out of court). The guy
then said he'll give twelve tix to local charities, boys' homes, etc.
but that he and his brother will definitely be there.

Well, I probably wouldn't sell either, but I ain't necessarily smart.
In '86 when the Sox were in the Series I went to Game 3 (first one at
Fenway, Sox were up 2-0). "Once in a lifetime thrill" I said. "Dream
come true" I said. "Oh boy!" I said.
Well we were out in the right field grandstands which aren't the
greatest seats in the world, but Fenway's Fenway, so I was happy. The
thrill of just being there would be enough, or so I thought. Well the
Sox fell behind early and, as it turns out, we were sitting right in
the midst of a Mets contingency. They were some of *THE* most
obnoxious fans I'd ever come across, but by far the worst was the *hole
sitting next to me. He was drunk as a skunk for starters. He makes
derogatory Sox comments all game long. (I'm no diehard Sox fan or
anything which ordinarily might've made this kind of comical, but
there was no humor when talking to this jerk.) Anyway he wouldn't
shutup or anything and the Sox were getting blown out, so my childlike
World Series fantasy was a bit shattered.
(Don't mean this to imply you won't have a great time. I was just
unlucky to sit next to an idiot.)

I wouldn't bet on getting a ticket for face value, but you never know.
If I were a student from Ark or Georgia Tech and decided to sell the

want to get enough for it to pretty much pay for the trip, unless it

This is without a doubt the biggest bunch of crap I've read to date.
There were MANY MANY terrible calls in this game, but from where I was
sitting (front row, upper deck btw) Duke's big men were getting hacked
big time under the basket and didn't get a freakin' call.
I can remember Hurley dribbling the ball across the mid-court line and
the RazorBack defender stepped in front of him (blocking foul) knocking
him off balance and there was no call.
All in all, the officiating was poor, but Arkansas benefited from the
calls, not Duke.
