    Aggies #1, the Aggies #2, the 49'ers. The AArdvarks (oops... meant 
    Anteaters.) The Gauchos. The Spartans. If nothing else, the Big West 
    HAS to be the champ nickname conference.

    To reply to a note in another topic; as to whom the Aggies have beaten
    this year:
               NCAA teams
    UNLV
    UTEP
    Texas Southern (did they finally make it into the Baile Grande, or was
    	it Southern Univ.?)
    Cal-Santa Barbara
    Towson State
    
    	       NIT Teams
    New Mexico (twice)
    Long Beach State
    
    Are the Aggies Sweet Sixteen material? Yes. Are they Final Four
    material? They can beat any team in the country, and are fairly
    consistent. They are not unbeatable. I do not think they will make the
    F4 (they might not even win the first game) but they are a good team.

Since Long Beach State did make it to the finals with UNLV, they should
have been asked to the tourney.  Instead, UCSB got the bid.  I know the
Gauchos beat UNLV during the season, but jeez, they lost to Pacific in
the tournament.  Outside of Isla Vista, these guys aren't that good.

    I agree. From what I've heard, the Big West shot itself in the foot by
    scheduling its tournament so late. I hope they got enough from ESPN to
    offset the prestige (and the $286,000) that they lost by not having
    four teams in the Baile Grande.
    
    You can bet that next year they'll end the Big West tournament earlier,
    no matter what ESPN offers.

    Gary Coulson is the new Fresno State coach.
    
    This means the following: Fresno State will graduate 80% of its
    basketball players during Colson's tenure. They will win 20+ games
    during this time. They will not go to the NCAA's during his entire time
    there.
    
    (All figures are an extension of his career at Pepperdina and New
    Mexico).
    
    Colson is a class act, especially concerning his attitude towards his
    players. They are true STUDENT-athletes. He institutes study halls and
    curfews. His players like that.
    
    -BUT- He also will schedule 15 games per year -- at home -- with the 
    Stetson Hatters, the Howard Paynes, the Centenaries, the Towson States 
    (until they get good, then he'll drop them from the schedule.) This was 
    his style at UNM. To give him credit, he also scheduled Arizona -- when
    Az. was #1 -- and UCLA in Pauley Pavilion -- and won both games.
    
    Gary Colson has over 500 career victories. He has never been to the
    Baile Grande, the Big Dance, the NCAA Tournament.

    The Big West conference retaliated against the NCAA's petty politics by
    running away with the NCAA Tournament title last night.
    
    A more amazing display of defense has never been seen in the
    tournament. UNLV set records for the most points scored in a
    tournament, most points scored in a title game, and largest margin of
    victory.
    
    Even though the NCAA tried to squelch this style of ball by
    high-grading the tournament and blatant discrimination against Big
    West teams, the Western style of run-and-run-and-gun (and run) proved
    to be superior to Eastern somnia or football-in-skivvies. Get used to
    it; even the eastern teams will have to run to keep up.

Tell me how this translates into the NCAA discriminating against Western
teams, please.

    1) Long Beach State getting jobbed out of the tournament in favor of an
    Eastern team (Indiana is east for us Westerners) because the BigWest 
    championship game wasn't over when the selections were made.
    
    2) The Loyola Marymount-New Mexico State first round game was the ONLY
    first round game between two Top 25 teams.

    Well said Mike .... in addition don't forget the great showing by
    Loyola, along with the brillance of Arkansas, Texas and Xaiver U.
    
    East Coast/Mid West Bigots can see the results and weep !

    When did Arkansas and Texas moved their campus west?  And Xavier is in
    Ohio (aka Midwest)....  What do all these teams have to do with the
    West, the Big West or even run-and-gun?
    
    UNLV was the best team in the tournament.  But that does not mean *all*
    west coast teams are better than other teams.  49ers dominating
    football does not been that the Chargers are also powerhouse by virtue
    of being on the same coast.
