| Well Jennifer Capriati Lost in the finals of the Virginia Slimms but I
don't think she truely lost because she gained so much respect by
having such a good showing in her first tournement at the young age of
13. Could she be Chris Everett born again.

| She received a cool 28,000 dollars for making it to the semi-finals
and when asked about how she would spend the money she said first she was
going to buy the complete set of The New Kids On The Block Dolls. Well
I guess she has her prioraties straight.

in the flesh ..... :-)

| Before teh coronation of this youngster, remember Tracey Austin?
She was finished at what, 18?
IMHO, 13 is too young to start a pro career.

the 28k for coming in second in the tourney in nuttin.
She's got a 5 million dollar contract for a tennis clothing line ready to be
signed.
She could buy Menudo for that much $$$$ :-)
If she isn't burnt out by 17 she could be the next graf. She could also
become the next austin, shriver or numerous other tennis kids that started
too early and burnt out too soon.

| Funny, my wife and I were discussing this last night.
We agree with JD and Metz. Thirteen is too young to
start a grueling pro career in tennis. My wife (a nurse)
felt that physically this young woman may do some serious
damage to a body that is not fully matured.
As was mentioned, remember Tracy Austin? I seem to remember
that back trouble ended her short career.

| A coupla years ago, I saw a TV spot about a driven young
woman tennis player. The inference was that she could
have been the next great American woman player. However,
she gave up tennis and decided to be a "normal" person.
The spot showed clips of some stormy sessions between
the young woman and her main driving force, her mother.
As a parent of two teenagers, I've often wondered about
pushing/not pushing them to do things. I imagine all
parents have to wrestle with this.

Come on!
To play at that level they have to love it or they would never reach
that level. I certainly am not going to shed any tears for someone that
is filthy rich before they reach the age of 20 and got that way playing
a game that they love. These kids and several generations of their
families are financially set for life.

| There is a pretty good article on this subject in the swimsuit issue
of SI (yes fellows, there was really articles in that issue).
In a weird irony, both Austin and Jager were seriously injured in
auto accidents last year, and are now recovering.
Jaeger can barely lift her arm to shoulder level, and Austin has
bone grafts in her leg.
Both said that they would advise her to not rush things, especially
returning from injuries too soon. Both Austin and Jaeger blamed
their woes on trying to play hurt, instead of taking time off to
heal. Some also blame Jaeger's overbearing father.
Anyhow, I hear that this kid's parents have learned from the past,
and will not let her play in a lot of tournaments. In addition,
her father has her doing preventative training.
I hope they look past the $$$'s, and remember that their daughter
for all of her physical development, is still a girl.

| Her father is not pushing her at all. Staphano Capriati wanted
his daughter to finish school like a normal child, but she begged
to turn pro and be tutored for her entire education.
I would like to see how well she would play against Stephi Graff
if she plays well against her look-out because there's no telling
how much she'll be worth before she's 20.
I hope her parents are'nt letting her do what ever she want's
with the money. She should save like crazy now just incase that
burn-out point does reach her before she's 20.

| Well Capriati is in the round of 16 in only her second pro
tournement. Today she beat some lady by default neverless she is
there and it looks like the second big paycheck in that many weeks.
I hope she keeps it up it is going to be interesting to see
her when she turns 18 I hope she does'nt get burnt out.

| Andre Aggasi today won the Lipton Invitational Chanpionship
and picked up a nice paycheck for 172,000 dollars, not yet 20 that's
pretty good. Stephan Edberg finished second but still made 92,000
dollars for his effort.

| IMO pro tennis has already peaked and is on the decline. This
as opposed to the pro golf game, which is growing in interest.
Quite a switch from 10 years ago ..... when the reverse was true.
Statistics on participation in the two sports also support this
theory ....... golf equipment sales, rounds played on public
courses (and the # of tournaments on t.v.) have increased each
year over the past 4-5 ......
As Eddie Andelman says " how good can a sport be when everyone
is talking about a 13-year old ? "
Hit .... hit ..... hit ..... hit .... boink ...... point (yawn)
