| Great ...
Could someone post the final standings, and the Grey Cup result
for me. Any kind of figures would be nice.
Point For Discussion.
My father lives in West Germany, where he works on the Canadian
Forces Base in Lahr. He retired from the Canadian Forces recently,
and stayed in Germany.
Whilst visiting him in September, I watched a CFL game between
Saskatchewan and Toronto on the Canadian Forces Network. At half time,
the broadcasters said something about merging with the NFL.
Has anyone else heard anything about this ? What do you think?
I know that there are differences between the two games, but that
shouldn't pose that much of a problem.
Regards,
Wayne.

| That would be interesting.
Actually, anyone with an active imagination could come up with
some scenarios...
The differences, from what I remember:
In the CFL:
o Field is longer and wider. Belive the field is 110 yds..
The "55 yd line" is designated "C".
o End zones are 15 yds deep. (Dan Schneider *would* do
well in the CFL ;^))
o You have *3* downs to move the ball 10 yards, which
results in a lot of punts on 3rd down
o 12 men per side. On defense, the extra position is
called "Rover" I think...
Interesting concept:
If the leagues don't merge, it would interesting to see the
Super Bowl winners and the Grey Cup winners square off each
year. Odd years, they play by NFL rules, Even years they play
by CFL rules.
I bet it would spark more interest than the Pro Bowl!

A few more rules I think I remember...
Touchbacks get the kicking team 1 point(either on a punt or a kickoff) I don't
think you're allowed to put the ball through the back of the endzone...
Kickoffs that go through the uprights get the kicking team 2 points I think..
ANybody remember any more ?

| Isn't the neutral zone between D and O lines bigger ?
I think that the CFL changing to play NFL rules, and adding one
half of the Teams into the AFC, and the other to the NFC under
two new divisions (Canada West, Canada East) would be a good Idea.
I don't think that the many U.S. cities hoping for an NFL franchise
would appreciate that though.

I heard something about the CFL going away and several of the

some Western cities could support an NFL franchise.

| Another thing you *must* keep in mind about the CFL is their
weather.
If they ever merge their teams with the NFL, they better either
all have domes or schedule all their away games for December. An
outdoor Edmonton vs. Calgary game in late December or January
would put the famous 1967 Green Bay-Dallas "Ice Bowl" game to
shame.
Don't they play the Grey Cup in November partly because of
December-January weather up there ???

Nope, no fair catches.
I reckon it's the best part of the Canadian game and one of the worst
in the American game.
The team which has punted may race downfield and kill the punt
returner. It works like this:
The first player downfield gets him around the waste.
The next 10 players all jump on him at the same time!
No, seriously, the kicking team must leave a five yard distance from
the player receiving the ball until he touches it.
Then they kill him unless it goes out of bounds or into the End Zone (1
point for the kicking team.)

If so, then its sort of like a Hail Mary Pass on 4th Down.

| Wayne,
One would think that the absence of the fair catch would cause more
turnovers, but I doubt if that's the case. The field being so much
wider really gives the receiver a bit more lateral room to run away
from the mob.
But I haven't seen a lot of games on either side of the border lately,
so maybe someone else more up-to-date could comment.

151.14 | Causes great confusion | SIOG::EGRI | | Tue Feb 13 1990 12:18 | 19 |
| I've been away from home a long time and we don't get to see too
many CFL games on ESPN here in Dublin but if memory serves me right
the late cuts from the NFL each season had a hell of a time getting
used to the 5 yard rule on punt returns. Some new guy playing his
first game would forget where he was, see the punt returner not
calling for a fair catch and then do his best imitation of a Mack
truck. Another trick was for the receiver to wait until the ball
hit the ground and rush forward to get the ball while someone was
in the 5 yard area thereby getting a 15 yard penalty tacked onto
whatever yardage he could get. Now I think the referee waives it
if he thinks the tacklers were trying to get outside the 5 yard
area. Any player who was behind the punter when he punted the ball
is eligible to runin and get the ball before the punt returner touches
it without incurring the "no yards" penalty. I can remember some
punters kick the ball as high as they could and then run under it
to catch it. Great fun to watch.

| Yes. On that play, we credit the quarterback with a pass thrown
and a pass received. I don't believe the team is allowed to attempt
another forward pass on the same play.
Also, otherwise ineligible receivers become eligible receivers once
the ball is tipped. Both Brian Holloway and Sean Farrell have caught
passes while playing for the Patriots. Pete Brock caught passes
earlier in his career but he was lined up as an eligible receiver,
Holloway and Farrell were lined up at their customary interior line
spots. Brock used to line up as a wingback on short yardage
formations.

I used to follow the Alouettes a lot but they folded in the early

>>Also, how do you score 1 point?
There are no fair catches in Canadian football. (This makes kickoffs and punts
verrrry interesting because 12 guys are trying to squish one at the same time.)
If the ball is kicked, punted, or fumbled into the end zone and out the back
of the end zone or one of the sidelines inside the endzone, it's a point.
Otherwise, should the receiving team touch it the same rules apply as in the
American game as far as a safety goes (the only difference being that the
player who takes possession gets killed and *then* his team loses 2 points).
BTW, the Fair Catch is the only thing I've never liked in American football.
Somehow takes something away from the game...
