the only one to have played and won as a head coach. Of the current
head coaches in the NFL, Ron Meyer has a ring for having been on
the Cowboys scouting staff in 1971 as well. Dan Reeves, Ray Perkins
and Art Shell are head coaches who've won Super Bowl rings as players.
Sam Wyche and Jack Pardee are the only two other head coaches I
can think of who may have played in Super Bowls (I'm sure Pardee
did, 1972 Redskins, but not sure about Wyche). Tom Flores may have
been an active Raider in Super Bowl II but they didn't win, but
he did win twice as head coach.

Chip, I don't think that he will be back and if he is that's great
because the Bears will be down again.
Let's talk about a few highlight from Mr. Ditka's past...
the drafting of the fridge....
the fighting, pickering and then final removal of Jim McMahon from the
team. The one guy the team rallied around...
Doug Flutie.....
Mike Tomzak could write a book on the head games Iron Mike has played
with him...
when the Bears won it all they won it with defense and that defense
picked up the one guy responsible for that Buddy Ryan and carried him
off the field not Mike. Shows you what his own team thinks about him..
and his brash statements this year about how his team sucked and
wouldn't win another ballgame....almost true though so he does get
points for honesty....

Mac, that maybe true but for one he doesn't have the talent in Chargers
that he had in the Bears especially on the offensive line. The biggest
thing that a QB has to do is make the guys around him believe he can
get the job, the Bears offensive players always believed in McMahon...
Wasn't he something like 33-3 as a starter at one time for them?
So throw McMahon out and explain his handling of Tomzak....

MacMahon is a slightly above-avg. QB who played with some great
players. Period. The rest is hype.
McMahon had a great record as a starter, but so what ? Tomczak was
something like 14-5 at one point .... Flutie was 3-1 .....

Dock, I'm not claiming McMahon is the second coming alls I'm saying
is for that organization he was a winner and he had the offensive
players respect. Tomzak was a winner but I don't believe that he
had the respect of peers that McMahon had. He also let Ditka get
inside his head so bad he needed theraphy. McMahon never let Ditka
bother him and that bother Ditka more than anything.
the debate here isn't about the merits of the QB's the debate is wether
Ditka is a bum as I claim or a good coach. I'm using the example of
what went on with the QB's as an example of why Ditka is bad,
overraTted and EGotistical Manic ;^)

I think the true formula stems from the fact that Mac was a winner,
the team rallied around him, and the team was talented. I don't
think the boy was great, but I also don't believe another "slightly-
above-avg" quarterback would have had the same success.
As for Ditka. I think you'll find he has an excellent record as a
head coach if you want to judge him on record. If you want to rate
him against current coaches, I'd guess there would be more than a
few teams that would trade coaches straight up for him.
IMO he's one of the best coaches in football today. And one probably
one hell of a night club lounge singer. (opps)

I think it's great that you know so much inside information about
your pals. The consensus in here, it seems to me, is that you
ain't squat unless you win the big one. Ditka has won the big
one. He must have something going for him. I believe the Bears
had the 2cd best record in the 80's. I'm pretty sure he took
over the Bears in the early 80's so most of their victories came
while he was coach. To top it all off, they play in your beloved

| This is the 25th anniversary of what monumental event in NFL history?
Answer:
The color of the officials' penalty flags was changed from white to bright
gold. I guess they couldn't come up with anything better to change in 1965.

That's a long time ago. Geez. I have trouble remembering white flags.
What year did they start wrapping beans in those flags?
And what year did they start using blue flags for a close approximation
of the spot of a turnover?

for years.
And as far as those little blue flags go, us *REAL* statisticians
don't need no steenkin' little blue flags. Us *TRULY MANLY*

John,
I'd like to get some kind of insight into the spotting of this
TRUE MANLINESS on my Chainsaw Manly Index.
Do you criticize them to their face, or do you cower behind your
staticians table and manuals, and say "BLAM on those unmanly officials!"

Dan-o was pretty cool though. I'm sure that he was forever turning

Kono was part of a Five Hawaiian Brother act that started out in
show business juggling machetes and moved on to do balancing acts.
If memory serves me correct the brothers were Nono, Mono, Dono (the stupid
one), Kono, and Bono (no relation to Sonny).
So the answer is that Kono played himself.

The record for most goals in a game, both teams, is 18 by the LA Kings

The record for most goals in a game, both teams, in a FINAL series

Istvan Gaal was such a lousy soccer player that he was traded to a
rival team for a soccer ball!
"I think it was a very fair trade," said John Fischer, president
of the Kitchener Concordia Kickers of the Canadian National Soccer
League. "Both teams got what they wanted."
Gaal was a player whose skills apparently couldn't be measured by
money. There was no cash involved in the swap with the Toronto
Hungarians. It was a straight player-ball deal.
"We didn't give him away for nothing," Fischer insisted. "We got
a regulation National Soccer League ball in return. They go for
$27.50."
Long before the trade, Gaal, a twenty-one-year-old Hungarian de-
fector who claimed he had scored thirty-one goals in fourty-four games
back in his native country, had been considered a prize catch. In
fact, the Kickers went to extraordinary means to sign him-they kid-
napped him. Gaal had agreed to terms with Toronto, but while he
was standing on a Toronto street corner with a team representative, a
black car screeched to a halt in front of them. Two men hustled Gaal
into their car and roared off to Kitchener, where he was persuaded to
sign with the Kickers.
Unfortunately, he turned out to be a big disappointment, said
Fischer. "He had a few moves, but he looked bad. At first we thought
he was holding back. He had just arrived in a new country and
couldn't speak the language. We thought he'd be okay once he
adjusted. But he never improved."
Gaal was so bad that he couldn't even make it as a substitute on
the Kickers, who were in thirteenth place in the fourteen-team league.
So a deal was struck with Toronto.
Recalled Fischer, "The Toronto team said to me, 'Why don't you just
release the guy to us?' I said 'Hell no, I'm not going to give him
away for nothing. You send me that soccer ball.' They said they
would. And they did.
"The trade wasn't all that unique," added Fischer, "I went checking
through the records and found that a hockey player was once traded
for a pair of nets."
