67.0. "Official CANDLEPIN Bowling Note" by NRADM::GALVIN (o..........|||| Candlepins) Mon Dec 18 1989 11:38

I've already noticed a previous note on 10 pin bowling.

Since I know of at least 3 candlepinners in this file, I would like
to keep this note open to all comments on the best individual sport
in the US -- Candlepin Bowling.

A note can be write-locked by the moderator if he doesn't feel that any
more replies should be made to the topic. I, on the other hand, was
just kidding, considering the topic and my well-known affiliation to
real bowling and the Great Bowling Debate of a SPORTS conference long
    archived.....

When the author says "write locked" it means his brain is too locked
to write anything of substance ... a natural affliction of 10-pin
    bowlers ...

No prob - we have an official TENPIN note now, so you guys can have
this one to yourselves.... I know how difficult it is for you guys to
handle the heavier bowling balls, anyways... :-)

    Hi Guys,

I enjoy both types on occasion. Does the Tenpin note still exist ?
If so please share its location. Also I noticed no replys does that
mean noone is interested in Candlepins ?

Doug --

I've only bowled candlepin one time, on a visit to Halifax Mass when
I was in high school. I believe it was an exchange concert deal.

Anyway, candlepin was pretty interesting....

But, in here, there have been some great debates about it in the past.
(you know, the old "Candlepin is REAL bowling" "No tenpin is...")
But they might have been in some of the older iterations of SPORTS notes.

If you want a discussion, just make a brazen statement, back it up
with any kinds of opinions (which you can call "facks") and then
sit back and watch. This topic will take off, I guarantee....

I bowl ten pins now, rather erratically, but I have a lot of fun...

Candlepins is still and always will be the real sport. That's all I'm
saying. If anyone would like to compare notes or discuss candlepins,
I'm available. I don't want to argue anymore about which is better.
It would be nice to see some candlepin advocates get involved here.

But I'm one who realizes it's pointless to argue the differences. The only
similarities between candlepin and tenpin are they're played on similar alleys
and both use bowling balls and pins. And with both the object is to score more
than the other guys. But there could be as many similarities drawn between
candlepin bowling and weightlifting and I'm sure it would be argued just as
passionately in here. I, for one, enjoy both.

67.22Candlepin Championship ShowNRADM::GALVINo..........|||| CandlepinsMon Aug 27 1990 12:0749
Well,

For all you guys (and girls) who missed it, the Candlepin "True Value"
Championship show happened this past Saturday. This show pits the best of
the best in candlepin bowling. It consists of the top 5 scores for the
previous 52 weeks of regular Saturday telecasts. The prize total is $20K,
with $10K going to the winner.

This years participants, and their seedings were:

Jim Putney 1st
Gary Carrington 2nd
Steve Renaud 3rd
Don Santiago 4th
Paul Berger (ex-DECcie) 5th

In the first match, Berger defeated Carrington (who received $1250 for his
efforts) to advance to round 2.

Santiago then defeated Renaud 120 to 118. The crucial call in this string
was a illegal lob call which cost Renaud 3 pins. He would have won by one.
Renaud collected $1250.

In the semi-final string Santiago defeated Berger (Berger collected $2500),
to advance to the 2 string final versus Putney.

Santiago, who was the dark horse in this tournament won the first string by
a score of 140 to 129. It was beginning to look as if the 4th seed may win
this thing. The second string continued to go Santiago's way. He was
leading all the way into the final frame. Putney had posted a strike in
the seventh. At that point Santiago was up by 15. Into the last two
boxes, Santiago got a spare and nine box to put increased pressure on
Putney. As Putney came up for the ninth, working on a strike, he wiped out
any pressure by throwing the double strike. After sparing in the tenth he
finished off the string by winning 143-117. The final count was Putney
272, Santiago 257. Putney takes home the $10,000 first prize, plus $50 in
bonus. Santiago takes home $5,000 for second.

This win by Putney capped off a superb year, where he appeared in 14
straight Saturday shows, winning 13 (one short of the all time record).
During this time he amassed a total dollar winning of $14,635. Add $10,000
for winning this past Saturday makes a very profitable year. And who said
Candlepins wasn't a sport?

Now we get to watch the women for the next two months. The men will be
back in November.

I saw the semifinals and finals - great clutch bowling by Putney.
I think he only led in three of the 20 frames in the two string final,
but he led when it counted most - at the end!

I felt sorry for Santiago. The announcers were dumping on him the
whole match. I would have liked to see him hold on and shut those guys
    up.

67.24A banner year for PutneyNRADM::GALVINo..........|||| CandlepinsMon Aug 27 1990 13:4416
I also didn't like Gillis and the others duping on Santiago. Heck,
just to be there he deserved better. I think because he isn't a big
name bowler, plus he is from the cape, noone knew much of him. But to
call him the "darkhorse" of the tournament was unfair.

As for Putney - What a year. But just to put it into perspective, you
had to be listening to WCGY this morning. Mike "Morin in the morning"
who is a big candlepin fan (and was also seated right next to the
bowlers on the show) called Putney at his home this morning. Like the
commercials we see on TV for the big star who is going to Disney World,
Morin asked Jim what he was going to do now? Putneys response - "Well
Mike, I am just about to change my son's dirty diaper" Good to know
that even the "great" candlepin stars take time out to come back to
    reality.
