Anyone looking at Montana's record in Anaheim knew the game wasn't
over at the half. Heck, even with the refs calling things LA's
way the 49ers still won. Word is tha the Rams lockerroom was
incredibly sullen after the game, even moreso than anyone expected.
This game may be the beginning of the end for them.

Seriously, after a team loses a big game, they very often come back
flat and off their game. When a team loses a big game that they
had, and blew it, they either come back with a vengence or roll
over and die. I think they will take the Jets too lightly, they
will probably still win the game, but maybe not until the fourth
quarter, coming from behind.

Wilson will go down with a broken leg. Grogan hemerhoids will flare
up and he won't be able to play. So then, they'll call for Flutie,
but he'll be so cold that he'll shrink (all little things shrink
in cold like this) and at 4'5" he'll be ineffective.
So, that manly son of the Patsies Owners Vic Kiam will come in. How
do I know Kiam's son is manly? Well, with a girly-mon name like
"Tory", he's got to be manly or by this time he'd be dead.
So, he comes in, scores 4 TDs, to push the patsies past the rams.
Berry gets mad and benches him, because Berry has big bucks riding

Kaim finds out, fires Berry, assumes the coaching role, make his
kid the starter, and starts handing out complimentary razors to all
season ticket holders...

| Sounds like the weather in the east (here in Boston) is warming up and
may be up in the 40s/50s by Thursday. I have not heard any extended
forecast going into the weekend though.
But the Rams have played 3 consecutive games on the East Coast now.
They won in the Meadowlands in a blowout over the Jets in cold weather,
then beat the Patriots in a close game in frigid conditions, then last
week beat the Eagles handily in milder but still cold weather in the
30s and raining. So unless there is a snow storm or a hail storm in
New Jersey by Sunday, which is unlikely, they should not see anything,
weather-wise, they had not seen in recent weeks. Their performances in
recent weeks, despite two of those opponents are lowly Jets and Pats,
should go a long way in changing their reputation as a warm-weather
team.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- Curt Warner, the most prolific runner in
Seattle Seahawks' history, Friday signed as a Plan B free agent with the
Los Angeles Rams.
Warner, 29, has run for 6,705 yards and 55 touchdowns in his
seven-year NFL career. He has gained at least 1,000 yards in four of his
six full seasons, including a career-best 1,481 yards in 1986.
Warner, though, has a history of knee problems. Last year, the
three-time Pro Bowler managed only 631 yards -- a career-low -- while
averaging just 3.3 yards per carry.
The Rams, with Greg Bell receiving most of the work at tailback,
finished fourth in the NFL in offense last year but only 13th rushing.
Rams coach John Robinson said he just wanted to enjoy the addition
of Warner to an already long list of tailbacks.
``I think he's a great back, and I think he can be again,''
Robinson told the Los Angeles Times. ``In terms of production, he's a
championship type of player both as a runner and receiver. I think he
can make a big difference for us.''
Warner, 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds, has rushed for 100 yards or more
in 23 games. He ranks fifth on the club's alltime reception list with
193 for 1,467 yards and seven touchdowns, and is the only Seattle player
ever to run for 1,000 yards in a season.
``It's going to be a great loss to our team,'' Seattle quarterback
Dave Krieg said.
Warner, who returned from a serious knee injury suffered in the
1984 season-opener, was a first-round draft choice by the Seahawks in
1983 out of Penn State. He set 41 records with the Nittany Lions.
Warner became an unconditional free agent in February when he was
left unprotected by Seattle. He reportedly earned $1.1 million last
season and is believed to have taken a pay cut to pay with Los Angeles.

47.59 | UPI: Rams make Brostek No. 1 | JUPITR::MOK | Charles P. Mok | Mon Apr 23 1990 10:30 | 54 |
| (From Clarinews)
Subject: Rams make Brostek No. 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Rams, seeking reserve help
for their aging offensive line, Sunday selected center/guard Bern
Brostek from the University of Washington with the 23rd pick in the NFL
draft.
Brostek, 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds, was the second offensive lineman
taken in the draft (after No. 9 pick Richmond Webb). The Rams made the
move despite the fact the native Hawaiian failed several NFL physicals
because of a back condition.
Asked what his medical staff had told him about Brostek's back,
Coach John Robinson quipped: ``That it's a big one.
``He hasn't missed a day of practice, I don't think, in two years.
He may have a bad back but it's usually at night or in the morning. In
the afternoon (when games are usually played) it's fine.''
A three-year starter with the Huskies, Brostek said from Oahu,
Hawaii, that the bottom two or three discs in his back have been
defective since birth. But he indicated they have never caused him a
problem, and added he receives no special treatment for the condition.
``I was wondering why (he failed the physicals),'' said Brostek,
named the Pacific-10's top lineman last year. ``I guess some of the
X-rays blew their minds.''
With its second pick -- the 24th in the second round and 49th
overall -- Los Angeles chose defensive back Pat Terrell of Notre Dame.
The Rams have sported some of the league's top offensive lines the
last 10 years or so, but their current edition is growing old. Tackle
Jackie Slater will be 36 in May, tackle Irv Pankey is 32 and center Doug
Smith is 33.
Brostek should learn from them -- as well as Pro Bowl guard Tom
Newberry -- and won't be pushed into a starting berth this season.
Robinson expects him to play center and guard.
``He will play both this year,'' the coach said. ``He's certainly
not going to take Doug Smith's job until (Smith) retires or because of
age becomes a part-time player. Doug was a Pro Bowl player this year.''
Brostek, who prefers playing center, worked out for Hudson Houck in
Hawaii last Tuesday, and the Los Angeles offensive line coach liked what
he saw.
``He's got good size, speed and movement, but the bottom line is he
loves to play the game,'' Houck said. ``He's not a mystery, or a player
we're going on potential. He can play football.''
Brostek, who has run 40 yards in 5.31 seconds, loves the fact he'll
be playing in the Los Angeles area. During Washington's trip to the
Freedom Bowl last December, he enjoyed body-surfing in nearby Huntington
Beach.
``I'm excited to be where the sunshine is,'' he said. ``I'm glad it
wasn't Green Bay.''
Terrell had five interceptions as a free safety with the Fighting
Irish last year but could see time at cornerback with the Rams. Los
Angeles recently released veteran LeRoy Irvin and is planning to shift
All-Pro corner Jerry Gray to safety.
The Rams announced late Sunday they had traded their fifth round
pick (134th overall) to the Jets for cornerback Bobby Humphery.

| (From Clarinews)
Subject: Berry joins Duck alumni with Rams
EUGENE, Ore. (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Rams have added a third
University of Oregon football alumnus to their defensive backfield.
The Rams chose Latin Berry of Milwaukie in the third round of
Sunday's National Football League draft and told him he will play on
defense -- not as a running back, the position he played throughout his
career.
``He was too good an athlete to pass up,'' said Gil Haskell, the
Rams' running back coach. ``We're not sure what secondary position he'll
play, but our scouts rave about him. We'll give Berry the opportunity to
return kicks and play defense.''
The Rams already have Duck defensive backs Anthony Newman and
Clifford Hicks, although Hicks is recovering from a knee injury.
``I cannot wait to get there,'' said Berry, who wanted to stay on
the West Coast. ``This is great.''
Berry, the 78th player chosen, gained more than 1,500 yards in the
three seasons he started at fullback for the Ducks, also playing at
tailback. He played offensive and defensive back at Milwaukie High
School but was more effective on offense.
``I am perfectly willing and able'' to play defense, said Berry,
who also is the reigning Pac-10 long jump champion and a two-time champ
in the long and triple jumps.
Meanwhile, Duck cornerback Chris Oldham was drafted in the fourth
round and 105th overall by the Detroit Lions. Oregon State fullback Pat
Chaffey went to the Chicago Bears in the fifth round as pick No. 117.

Why Chuck Long? Will Long want to be a no-play back up?

| Why Chuck Long?
To advance the ball quickly downfield, hopefully catching the defenders
by surprise....
Next question.

He could be made into a competent backup. Hopefully he'll end up like
Steve Young, contributing when called upon.

| Seems like Ernie Zempesie (sp?) likes Chuck Long since he was coming
out of college. He wanted to draft him (but was beaten by the Lions)
for San Diego to succeed Dan Fouts. Long and Everett are very similar
type of quarterbacks, so it is not surprising that Zempesie likes Long.

Subject: Bell to skip minicamp, could be on way out
Date: 18 May 90 21:17:02 GMT
ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- Greg Bell won't be at minicamp next week,
and his agent says it's unlikely the running back will be with the Los
Angeles Rams this season as well.
Bell has rushed for 2,349 yards and 31 touchdowns in his two
seasons with the Rams, but the team reportedly has been seeking to trade
the former Notre Dame star since signing Curt Warner six weeks ago.
By mutual agreement, Bell will skip the minicamp, which runs Monday
through Thursday.
``We're fairly optimistic that Greg will probably be moved at the
owner's meeting that will take place next week (in Dallas),'' Bell's
agent, Steve Feldman, told the Orange County Register in Friday's
editions.
``It's just obvious the Rams are going to go in a different
direction, and we'd like to get in a new situation as soon as
possible.''
Meanwhile, Pro Bowl linebacker Kevin Greene, who is not signed for
next season, is also expected to miss minicamp. He had 33 sacks the last
two seasons and is seeking a contract that will put him among the
league's top pass rushers.

Subject: Rams sign Johnson
Date: 23 May 90 21:05:10 GMT
ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Rams added a fifth
quarterback Wednesday, signing former Canadian Football League standout
Rick Johnson to a two-year contract.
Johnson, 29, will compete with Mark Hermann, Chuck Long and Chris
Parker for backup spots to Jim Everett.
The 6-foot-2, 205 pounder played five seasons with Calgary and one
with Toronto. Johnson threw for 31 touchdowns and 4,379 yards in 1986.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Rams Thursday signed
seventh-round draft pick Kent Elmore, a punter from the University of
Tennessee.
Elmore, who averaged 42.2 yards a kick in college, will compete for
the Los Angeles punting job with free agent Hank Ilesic. Dale Hatcher,
who held the job the last five seasons, signed with Green Bay as a Plan
B free agent.
The Rams still have five of their 11 draft choices still unsigned,
including No. 1 pick Bern Brostek of Washington, No. 2 Pat Terrell of
Notre Dame and No. 3 Latin Berrty of Oregon.

| Subject: Slater reports to Rams
Date: 22 Aug 90 18:36:59 GMT
ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- Los Angeles Rams offensive tackle Jackie
Slater ended his four-week holdout Wednesday and began preparations for
his 15th season with the team.
The Rams would not say whether Slater had successfully renegotiated
his contract or whether the six-time Pro Bowl player would be fined. The
NFL maximum fine for a holdout is $1,500 per day.
Slater, 36, was upset with his reported $550,000 salary for the
1990 season.
The team was left with four holdouts -- linebacker Kevin Greene,
defensive end Doug Reed, tight end Damone Johnson and safety Michael
Stewart.

| The Rams signed Marcus Dupree yesterday.
He's been out of football since 1985 when he was injured while playing
for the USFL's Portland Breakers.
One interesting point is that, back then, Dupree apparently cashed in
an insurance policy from Lloyds to cover the premature end to his
football career. Now he's playing again ???
