| Clapton is superb.
A friend relates the thrill of getting tickets to see Clapton live
a Fillmore East. The big night had arrived, he was in the audience.
The curtain rose. Two roadies walked EC out to a stool on stage.
The music starts. EC plays about two bars worth, and falls flat
on his face.
The two roadies come out, pick up EC, dust him off, take him backstage.
Concert ends....
Don't know whether he got his money back or not.
Comparing guitarists is like trying to decide if Eddie Murphy is funnier
that Cosby. Both are hilarious, both work with extremely different types
of comedic vehicles.
Same with Hendrix/Clapton. Analyzing the situation using knowledge gained
as a music major, Hendrix was an innovator, perhaps the greatest innovator
of his time. (Every major musical period had its innovators and
its culmintors. i.e. the Classical period's innovator was Mozart,
while Beethoven was its culminator). Hendrix was the greatest innovator
of his time.
Clapton is not an innovator, but he is superb....
Oh well,

Karen, he's too smooth for my taste. Just seems to me that he combines
the best of all styles and play that way. No rough edges. No mistakes.
He's arguable the best guitar player around but just doesn't strike
any emotional response from me with his playing. It's great to listen
too but I just don't feel anything when he plays. Now Jimi on the
other hand, has me hanging on to every note feeling pain, enjoyment
etc....

Jimi Hendrix'''''''s style of playing can still be heard from Robin
Trower, although it's been a while since he's done anything new, I
think. Clapton and Jeff Beck are my favorites. And on a side note one
of my favorite songs/guitar solos is played by Dickie "at the time",
Richard "now" Betts (?), Blue Sky/Allman Brothers.
I birdie told me Santa will be dropping off a Clapton CD for me this year.

Even Gronowski hit it on the head - Springsteen is an overrated,

| Prince is about as innovative as a toadstool. He has taken overworked,
underated trite musical ideas and wrapped them up in a new paisley
cover. He ain't a great culiminator either.
At least Hendrix was moving more and more toward the avant garde.
(Had Hendrix lived I truly think that today he'd be involved with
composers like Cage, Stockhausen, Penderecki, Ligetti in pushing
the limits of music to new frontiers)
Satriani is way cool.
JMHO,
