| You don't state what O/S you are using. The density setting
for UNIX are in cam_data.c prior to 4.0 and ddr.dbase with
4.0 and above. If the 8505 is not defined the defaults for
a tape drive may not change the densities in the way you
expect. I imagine that VMS may have a similar problem if
the 8505 is not a recognised device and is treated as a
'default' tape drive.
This is the difference between a 85xx and the TKZ versions.
CSS has made sure that the O/S groups provide device
recognition for the TKZ devices.

| The Exabyte 8505 drive has compression and the power up default is to
write in compression mode. The TKZ09 is an Exabyte 8500 without
compression, therefore the TKZ09 is unable to read a tape written on
an 8505 in compression.
If the customer had access to an Exabyte 8500C, the tape from the
8505 could be read.

reply .*
the exabyte 8505 is connected to ALP/VMS V6.2 system
tkz09 is on vax/vms v6.2.
if tkz09 is non compress mode tape drive, I think I will
get user to mount the tape with /media=nocompaction on the
exabyte 8505 to see if this fixes the problem.
thanks.
