I have a query which is posed in note 2722.0 regarding support for TKZ60 on Digital Unix. My customer as a IBM Compatable 3480 FACOM and wants to decommission his mainframe. They operate as a bureau and have customer data on 3480 cartridges. Can we simply use "dd" to read and write 3480 tapes compatible with their FACOM until the decommission it? The SOC indicates Networker Save and Restore as pre-requisite software without any qualification. I presume this is only required to support the TKZ61/62 series for the robotics/loader and nothing to do with reading/writing 3480 data formats. Can someone confirm this. Much appreciated, Richard Quan Sales Support - CSF Melbourne [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

One of the things that dd(1) is best at, is copying data device to device, when the records are a fixed block size known by the user. I've seen hints that it can do variable length records, but I've never tried it and would be inclined to doubt that it is a frequently used feature. Assuming the IBM version of the drive and the TKZ6x version read and write the same on-tape data format and use the compression algorithm (if applicable), then reading tapes written elsewhere shouldn't be a problem. MRU V1.1 supports the TKZ62 and TKZ64. |
