3755.0. "IBM 3490-C22 SCSI tapes under Digital Unix" by VAXRIO::CUPOLILLO () Thu May 15 1997 23:11

         Hi,

         A customer that has some IBM 3490-C22 magtape units connect to
    RS6000 using a SCSI-2 differential interface, asked us if it is
    possible to use these magtapes with AlphaServers 4000 or 4100 running
    Digital Unix.

         Thanks,

         Cupol

	Maybe. If they devices are SCSI-2 compliant and you can get
	any cable connector differences worked out, they will probably
	work. It is unlikely that the system group or the Digital
	UNIX group has qualified such a configuration, so if it doesn't
	work, the customer is on their own to figure out what the
	problem is. On Digital UNIX before V4 they may need to add
	entries to the device recognition tables in /sys/data/cam_data.c
	for the drives. The file is reasonably well commented and has
	many examples. This will require a kernel rebuild and reboot.
	On V4 and later they can edit /etc/ddr.dbase with much the
	same information (different format). The manual page for
	ddr_config should explain how to update the file.
