Yes and no.
Yes, if you can manage C-IV cartridges that is written by TZ89 drive that
can only read on TZ89 in TL896 but not on TZ88 in TL822. TZ89 drive can
read TZ88 format but not the other way around.
No. If you want to share all Compact-IV cartridges without discretion.
C-III or C-IIIXT cartridges can be shared between TZ88 and TZ89 without
problem.

Thanks for pointing up the tape cartridge write here/read there issue.
I'll deal with that. But, as far as the mutiple unit connection of a
TL822 to a TL896, that is okay?

| You'll want to check with the software that you're going
to use. While it is likely that they tested with mixed
libraries, the quirks of not being able to mix some tapes
with some drives may worry them enough not to support a
particular configuration.
On the other hand, the robots are all the same in such a
configuration; same hardware (often down to the rev numbers
of boards) and by necessity, the same firmware.
