3695.0. "TLZ09 connected to an INFOSERVER 1000" by LISVAX::RIBEIRO_N (NELSON RIBEIRO @XIP) Wed Mar 12 1997 12:24
Hi all,
i have been asked for make a review on a solution that a collegue of mine is
going to install at a costumer site, but several questions poped up to my head
when i saw the configuration and the reason i am posting this note is because i
don't known the answer for them.
So, the costumer has a VAX 4300 with VMS 5.5-2 and a INFOSERVER 1000 ( don't
known the software client version, but i think it is an old one) and he is
planning to buy an alphaserver, meanwhile the TK70 that he has connected to the
VAX4300 is no longer enough to support the backups the costumer has to do.
My collegue tried to arranged a solution for this problem and he came up with
the idea of connecting a TLZ09 to the infoserver while the costumer don't
receive the alphaserver. He tried to implement the solution but he has comed up
with several problems:
1 - according to the person who went to the costumer to install this
option, a pak (QL-0UVA9-AA) and a software in a CDROM format
(QA-0UVAA-H8) is needed in order to enable the tape functions, althought
the tape is seen by the infoserver as an TLZ09 (INFO> SH DEV
FULL)
My doubts are:
1- Althought the Infoserver 1000 client software v3.3 does not support
the TLZ07 nor TLZ09, will the tape be recognized has a TLZ06 or a
generic scsi tape, on the VAX side?
2- Is there any restrictions to this case, or something to be aware
about?
Thanks,
NelsonR.

1. The Infoserver does require a PAK to enable tape serving.
2. The Infoserver is a VERY SLOW tape server. I wouldn't do
backup to it. Attach the tape to the largest system and
use software ( Archive Backup - VMS, DEC NSR - UNIX ) to
backup over the network.

| Thanks for the reply but,
will the Vax system (v5.5-2) recognized the tape service? and how will it
recognize, as a TLZ06 or as a generic tape drive?
Thanks,
NelsonR.
