Hi all, I had a problem with the TLZ6L-VA drive running on OpenVMS 1.5-1H1 with hardware version B04. When I replaced the tape drive with a spare from the MCS logistics, it always gave an error message "fatal drive error" when I "init" the tape. But with a previously "init" tape, I could mount the drive without any problem. Suspecting the spare was D.O.A. I replaced it with another spare, the same error message appeared. Anyone has an idea what is the problem ? Firmware problem ? Thanks in advance. Rdgs, Loh R.C.

Check the errorlog. I EXPECT you will find errors like: 04/44/B4 or 04/44/00 [SENSE_KEY/ASC/ASCQ]. These errors indicate "Internal Target failure"..... I have seen tapes (!!), which suffered this problem: You could read them without problem, but CANNOT write them (and give errors as above). Since your problem seems solid, there are only a fews ways out: - Bulk-erase the tape-cartridges. You NEED and extreme STRONG eraser to do this. If you CANNOT find one, -> - Could try a TLZ07 to try to overcome the issue.... and get the media going again (NO garantee at all if this will work). - Throw the tapes away and buy new ones. It is STILL NOT UNDERSTOOD (if you see 04/44/..) HOW and WHY this occurs. Be sure Head Cleaning is done on a regurlar basis and good tapes (Digital) as used. Jan Visser. |
