Subj:	tz87 mechanical positioning error ASC/ASQ=15/01

Gentlemen,

Please help/suggest.
 One of our customers had connected a TZ867 tape loader to KZQSA of
 VAX 4500 (with VMS version 5.5-2).
 This TZ867 loader is recently (dec 96) replaced by a BA350-KB pedestal
 with a TZ87-VA tape in it. (drive firmware is 9B3C (=V60) ).

 Since this move the Backup (running in the night) sometimes fails with
 Sense-code=04, ASC=15 and ASQ=01 ,
 which means hardware error 'mechanical positioning error' (see vms
 error log entry below).
 This occurs 1, 2 or 3 times a week on different tapes and time.

 All hardware is already swapped : KZQSA, SCSI-cable BN23G-02, BA350-KB and
 the TZ87-VA drive.
 Also VMS patches are installed, but the problem stays.
 Also SCSI termination is checked.
 Also a TZ88-VA (firmware CC33 V52) fails with the same problem.
  (However TZ88 is not official supported in this configuration)

 The used Backup statement looks like :
  BACKUP/BLOCK=16000/IGNORE=(INTERLOCK,LABEL)/REWIND/LABEL=TUES01 -
  CROSS1:[*...] JAAP$MKA300:TUES01.BCK/JOURNAL=CROSS2:[BACKUP]TUES01.LIS

 The tapes used are COMPACTAPE III; production number SH610Mxxxx.

 Questions:
 Has someone experience with this kind of error (mechanical
 positioning error) ??
 Can someone explain the origin of the error sense code ASC/ASQ=15/01 ?
  (In our opinion it should be a internal drive problem related perhaps
   to the used tape ?)
