| This invariably means the tape drive is broken in some way. The loader
logic cannot quiz the drive to find out how it failed so it posts ERR
UNK - useful huh!

| I did some further testing today and found that if the tapes are first
initialized under VMS that they work fine under NT! I did this by moving the
TZ885 onto an Alpha Station 3300, so therefore I beleive there is no hardware
problem with the TZ885.
I also tried both NTBACKUP and the customers Backup Exec software, both gave
the same symptoms.
Upon checking with our local support they tell me that they have seen this
problem before, but could not give me any suggestions to fix this.
Has anyone else seen this and has any ideas?

We're asking Quantum to add this in the manual. When we get more detail
we will post it.

3661.4 | Any status on this? | KAOFS::R_RYAN | I used to be a coyote but Im ok nowoooo! | Fri Apr 25 1997 22:14 | 10 |
| Has Quantum come back with anything on this problem? We have "Err unk"
happening on a customer's site as well. The symptoms are the same as in
the original note.
It's all very well to say 'seen it, done that', but it would be preferable
to see an answer for this problem. Has this issue been escalated to
engineering? Has the problem been isolated to Quantum?
Any information would be helpful as we are considering escalating this
to engineering.

Ron Ryan

You should escalate this to IPMT.
