3661.0. "TZ885 "ERR UNK" on display" by MEOC02::VIETH () Tue Feb 18 1997 06:12

Has anyone know what a "ERR UNK" on the the display of a TZ885 means (I have
seen a TZ875 also do this)? The manual only says something like an error of
an unknown origin has occurred?

The customer is trying to initialize brand new tapes under Windows NT Server
3.51 on an AlphaServer 2100 via a KZPAA (no other devices on the chain).

If the error is cleared by removing all the tapes and powering off/on the
TZ885 the initialize will fail on the next tape in the loader in the same
fashion. The customer has to repeat this exercise for each tape, only the
first time arround. I got the customer to manually load each tape (Compac
tape III) into the drive so that the media format would be written by the
drive as 10c (10GB compressed), and then running the initalize sequence, but
it still fails in the same way.

After it has initialized the tapes for the first time (with those problems) it
runs fine on the second attempt through all the tapes without stopping.

Any clues? My customer is most annoyed and frustrated with this.

    This invariably means the tape drive is broken in some way. The loader
    logic cannot quiz the drive to find out how it failed so it posts ERR
    UNK - useful huh!

3661.2Compatibility with operating systemMEOC02::VIETHWed Feb 19 1997 11:2016
I did some further testing today and found that if the tapes are first
initialized under VMS that they work fine under NT! I did this by moving the
TZ885 onto an Alpha Station 3300, so therefore I beleive there is no hardware
problem with the TZ885.

I also tried both NTBACKUP and the customers Backup Exec software, both gave
the same symptoms.

Upon checking with our local support they tell me that they have seen this
problem before, but could not give me any suggestions to fix this.

Has anyone else seen this and has any ideas?

    We're asking Quantum to add this in the manual. When we get more detail
    we will post it.

3661.4Any status on this?KAOFS::R_RYANI used to be a coyote but Im ok nowoooo!Fri Apr 25 1997 22:1410
    Has Quantum come back with anything on this problem? We have "Err unk"
    happening on a customer's site as well. The symptoms are the same as in
    the original note.
    It's all very well to say 'seen it, done that', but it would be preferable
    to see an answer for this problem. Has this issue been escalated to
    engineering? Has the problem been isolated to Quantum?
    Any information would be helpful as we are considering escalating this
    to engineering.

    You should escalate this to IPMT.
